Thank you to the four brothers who joined me in marching and hopefully next year we can tremendously increase that number. The parade committee reserved 3 tables for us for the party in the school auditorium that we filled up with members from Tara along with marchers and non-marchers alike. All agreed that they had a great time! Thanks to John Nolan and Ed McGlade who co-chaired our 50 th annual St. Patrick s Day dinner dance where we honored Jeff Stark as Man of the Year and Joanne Brennan as Lady of the Year. Our day of celebrating Saint Patrick on March 17 th began with Mass at the Marine Hall at 9:30AM and we had 40 brother and sister Hibernians there which was great to witness. Thanks to Fr. O Brien and our chaplain Deacon Frank Flood for starting us off on the right foot before we marched up 5 th Avenue. We had 17 men (members and friends) march up the Avenue in NYC. Don t forget the Easter Monday gathering is at noon in Mineola behind the Courthouse and after the hour remembrance of the 1916 Uprising, the Irish American Center hosts a reception for those attendees right afterwards. Just as a reminder, we are having a happy hour trip to BK Sweeney s in Bethpage. The date is Tuesday April 10 th and the time is from 4:30PM to? As it s on a Tuesday, you will get up to $15.95 off the lower of your two dinners. We had 24 Hibernians take advantage of this a year ago and John Coumatos, BK s owner, really appreciated our support. In case you didn t notice under our calendar of events, No Talent night is on April 21 st and is expected to be a lot of fun as it always is. Wishing you and your family a Happy and Holy Easter. Please keep The Brennan family in your prayers on the loss of their dear wife and mother, Pat. Hope to see you at our next meeting on April 11 th. Yours in our motto, Bill Scharen

2 P a g e 2 S t a r s & S h a m r o c k s I would like to thank all the ladies that made the corned beef sandwiches on St. Patrick s Day. Especially, Joanne Kranz, who sold them. Again Thank You Ladies. Back in 1968 a few fellows of Irish birth and decent got the idea that Massapequa Park & Massapequa should become members of the Ancient Order of Hibernians and they formed Division 15. When they first started they met at the village Hall in Massapequa Park. In 1980 they were able to purchase our current hall. M i k e s T i d b i t s G r e e n B e r e t C l u b N e w s The hall is open Fridays at 8pm come on down to meet with old and new friends. We are still carrying Labatts Blue Light in bottles when we can get it. Along with Bud, Bud Light, and Coors Light. Now in 2018 we are celebrating our 50th Anniversary. On September 22,2018 we are going to have our 50 th Anniversary Dance. This will be from 7 to 12PM. at the Hartigan Council in Bethpage. It will include a cocktail hour, sit down dinner with a choice of Prime Rib, Fish or Chicken, Open Bar and Live Music by the Harpers Ferry band. The price is $75.00 p/p. This is just a reminder to keep the date open. More details to follow next month. Any News please send to: emcglade@verizon.net If there is anything you would like us to get in - let us know - we can always have beer specials. Call Ed McGlade at for rental information. After many miles of parades it was good to be done. Our rest will be brief though as we are scheduled to perform at the AOH GAA seven aside tournament in Gaelic Park in the Bronx and at a little league parade in Massapequa Park over the next three weeks. The band would like to welcome Michael Foley to our drum corps. Keep an eye out for the band s uniform raffle - more details soon. To remind everyone - it cost $100 to join the band after that the lessons are free. Anyone looking for additional information can me at emcglade@verizon.net Practices are Thursday evening at the hall. Come on down to say hello and see what we are all about.

3 S t a r s & S h a m r o c k s In God We Trust P a g e 3 C h a p l a i n s C o r n e r A few years ago I included in my column a reference to how we should reverence the name of Jesus. Many of us, myself included recite the Hail Mary (s) at the beginning and end of our meetings without bowing our heads at the Sacred Name of Jesus. This past Sunday (Palm Sunday) I was reminded of the previous column as I listened to the words of our Second reading, the letter of St. Paul to the Philippians. Let me refresh our collective memories: V6 Who, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God something to be grasped. Rather, he emptied himself, taking the form of slave, coming in human likeness, and found human in appearance, He humbled himself, becoming obedient to death, even death on a cross. Because of this, God greatly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, of those in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Have a blessed Easter and let s all reflect on our reverence of Jesus Name when we recite the Hail Mary s at our next meeting, Wednesday, April 11 th. PEACE TO ALL, DEACON frank Right to Life Our First Right - Right for Life 30 Million women executed. That's the number of dead since The next time somebody tells you abortion is a woman's health issue, remind them of this. Half those killed are women. MARCH FOR LIFE This year was the first time a Vice President was at the Podium This year was the first time a sitting President addressed the Rally. Next year, will you be there? 4 P a g e 4 S t a r s & S h a m r o c k s Ashford Castle: An bhfuil Fhios agat The castle was built on the perimeter of a monastic site in 1228 by the Anglo-Norman House of Burke. After more than three-and-a-half centuries under the de Burgos, whose surname became Burke or Bourke, Ashford passed into the hands of a new master, following a fierce battle between the forces of the de Burgos and those of the English official Sir Richard Bingham, Lord President of Connaught, when a truce was agreed. In 1589, the castle fell to Bingham, who added a fortified enclave within its precincts Dominick Browne, of the Browne family (Baron Oranmore and Browne), received the estate in a Royal Grant in either 1670 or In 1715, the estate of Ashford was established by the Browne family and a hunting lodge in the style of a 17th-century French chateau was constructed. The double-headed eagles still visible on the roof represent the coat of arms of the Brownes. The estate was purchased in 1852 by Sir Benjamin Lee Guinness. The Castle passed to a nephew Ernest Guinness and was later sold in 1939 to Noel Huggard who opened the estate as a hotel, which became renowned for the provision of its country pursuits, such as golf, falconry, angling and shooting. In 1951, the film director John Ford came to the west of Ireland to film The Quiet Man, starring John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara. The grounds of the castle, as well as nearby Cong, formed the backdrop for much of the action in the movie. Today Ashford castle is an iconic luxury castle, five star hotel in Cong, Co. Mayo Ireland. My mom was a warrior in every sense of the word, she faced each new battle with a strength and determination I never knew possible. Yet through it all, she kept a love of life and was always looking to take care of her husband and daughters. She had a wicked sense of humor, would light up the room when she walked in, but her best quality was always putting others before herself. Mom cared so much about her family, friends and Brother and Sister Hibernians who became an extended family. My family and I heard from so many of you that my mother was the first person to welcome you when you came to the Hall, and that she made you feel immediately comfortable. That was her gift, and it came from her heart. I think it would be a wonderful tribute to an extraordinary woman to continue her legacy of caring and welcoming. Yours in Friendship, Unity and Christian Charity, Joanne Meetings The next LAOH meeting will be on Monday, April 16, The meeting will begin promptly at 8:00pm. Please make every effort to attend. We will be having a guest speaker, Catherine Norton Doherty, NYS LAOH Catholic Action Officer will be speaking about Boots on the Ground NY project for female veterans. Cake Duty I was not at the March meeting and do not have the list for cakes and desserts. St Patrick s Day Once again we had a great St. Patrick s Day. Thank you to Joanne Kranz and all of our members who came down to the Hall to make the sandwiches, and to those ladies who made the delicious soda bread and scones. It is always a great way to spend St. Patrick s Day, together with Brother and Sister Hibernians and Tara Pipes & Drums. If mailing your check and dues card, provide a self addressed stamped envelope for your card to be returned to you. If you have lost your dues card, you need to include a note to Margo letting her know and also include the stamped envelope. Calling posts and postage for follow up mailings can be expensive, and we would appreciate everyone s cooperation to pay on time. Thank you. Annual St Patrick s Day Dinner Dance The Dance was on Saturday 3/10/18 from 7:00pm to midnight at the American Legion Post Congratulations once again to Jeff Stark AOH Man of the Year. Thank you once again to my sisters for the honor and privilege of receiving the St. Brigid s Award. Thank you to Ed McGlade and John Nolan for organizing the dance, it was a magical night. Boots on the Ground Our day (or in this case evening) of charity will be on Wednesday April at 7:30pm. We will still be accepting donations up to and including that day. I will be going shopping on the prior Sunday, so any cash donations would be appreciated before that. Please call Joanne Brennan at if you will be able to attend that evening to help put the bags together. Cathie Norton Doherty will be there to accept the go bags and I will try to get the local papers to attend to help this charity get the attention it deserves. To our Brother Hibernians you are more than welcome to come and help us. CONGRATULATIONS, CONDOLENCES & PRAYERS I apologize but I do not have the list of prayers. Please keep all of our brother and sister Hibernians and their family members who are sick in your prayers and thank you once again for the prayers for my mother Patricia Hannigan Brennan. God Bless.
