Salt Lake Rotary Bee A PUBLICATION OF CLUB 24, SALT LAKE CITY VOLUME 44 JANUARY 2019 NUMBER 7 Tuesday, January 1, NO MEETING HAPPY NEW YEAR! Tuesday, January 8, Joseph Smith Memorial Building, 15 E. South Temple RESULTS OF THE GREAT SALT LAKE DUST PLUME STUDY Dr. Kevin Perry, U of U Department of Atmospheric Sciences The Great Salt Lake provides crucial habitat for migratory birds, supports the brine shrimp and mineral extraction industries, and provides extensive recreation opportunities. It is estimated that the lake provides approximately $1.32 billion in economic benefits to the State of Utah annually. As the lake continues to recede, it has begun to produce dust plumes which adversely impact local and regional air quality. Dr. Perry will summarize the results of a two-year study designed to identify where the dust from the GSL originates from, how fluctuating lake levels will impact dust production, and whether there are any heavy metals in the dust which might pose a health hazard to surrounding communities. Tuesday, January 15 at the Marriott, 75 S West Temple LEGISLATIVE ISSUES FACING UTAH Gregory H. Hughes, Former Speaker of the Utah House Hear a preview of the upcoming legislative session from his perspective as former speaker of the Utah House. He will also touch on the homeless problem and the Inland Port. Tuesday, January 22 at Alta Club, 100 E. South Temple LIFTING NEPAL'S SLUM CHILDREN OUT OF POVERTY AND DESPAIR Dr. Usha Mharjan Wall, Eternal Hope Nepal Trapped for centuries in extreme poverty, malnutrition and substandard housing, some of Nepal's poorest caste children are getting educational opportunities and healthcare through the humanitarian efforts of Eternal Hope Nepal. EHN was created by a Nepali doctor and hospital administrator who left her successful career to work exclusively with children in Nepal's most remote slums. Recently married to a Utahn, Dr. Maharjan shares her story of hope and reformation. Tuesday, January 29 at the Marriott, 75 S West Temple THE NEW SALT LAKE CITY AIRPORT: A $3.6 BILLION WOW Bill Wyatt, Executive Director, Salt Lake City International Airport Rotarians and guests attending the Jan. 29 meeting of Club 24 will get a preview of the Salt Lake International Airport rebuild, part of which will open in Speaker will be Bill Wyatt, Executive Director, Salt Lake City Department of Airports. Attendees will hear about the new airport s ease of use, efficiency, sustainability, cost containment and numerous other state-of-the-art features that will service local and international travelers.
Flipping the calendar to January never fails to spark fresh optimism that the New Year will bring new opportunities for positive change in our personal lives and in the community at large. It s fitting that January is Rotary Awareness Month because it offers each of us an opportunity to take stock of the varied and meaningful reasons why we are Rotarians and to invite friends and associates of like mind to join our ranks. Friendship; fun; opportunities to do good at home and abroad; networking; enlightenment about important issues in our communities, the nation and around the world; and travel with friends are just a few of the reasons we treasure. In recognition of Rotary Awareness Month, I d like to borrow a practice from the Fort Collins, Colorado club to set aside seconds at each meeting for a member to tell us why he or she is a Rotarian. I think it will be enlightening and a lot of fun! Take time to reflect about the wonderful opportunities you enjoy as a member of Rotary of Salt Lake City. Then, resolve to share them with people you know and encourage them to experience for themselves the personal satisfaction that comes from being a Rotarian. Let s make growing our membership base a New Year s resolution that each of us commits to follow in I m optimistic that 2019 will open new doors and present valuable opportunities for all of us. Happy New Year! Alene 2

Hum-dinger Bell Ringers By Floyd Hatch We are pleased to report that Club 24 was well represented on Main Street s most notorious Salvation Army bell ringing station on Wednesday, December 12. More than 30 members, friends, and Rotaractors served on nine different shifts from 10am to 7pm. Two of the bells were rung so hard they became ineffective and had to be terminated. Historically, the weather has created some difficulty. Our day of Salvation Service was no different with snow flurries and temperatures in the teens. We thank each of our helpers and especially our young Rotaractors, Savannah and Madison. Linda Kruse and Russ Fericks. 4
YWCA Play Group By Teri Jensen Energetic Rotarians Judy Fang, John Eberhardt, Duane Hill, Bry Davis, Amelia Larsen, Jan Stucki, Bob Huefner, and Teri Jensen had a great time with the YWCA Domestic Violence Shelter preschool play group. This was our first time in the gym - it was definitely a workout. We wish we could show you pictures of these precious children. Their hugs and smiles are worth so much. Keep in mind these children are in the shelter with mothers who have run for their lives to escape domestic violence. One of our newest Rotarians, Amelia Larson, presented a check for $1000 to the shelter on behalf of Club 24. Here's a note from their volunteer coordinator: "It was awesome meeting you and getting to know you better. I love the relationship the Rotary Club has established with the YWCA. The children cherished being with you. Your group provided one of the most powerfulmoments on our campus today. Jan Smith Volunteer Coordinator YWCA Utah" 5
Students Welcome Dictionary Delivery Mark Maxfield recently visited some students and gave them a lesson about dictionaries. Each student was given their own copy to keep. 6
Photo by Mike Deputy Rotaract Visits Club 24 By Mike Deputy The leaders of Salt Lake Rotaract visited the Salt Lake Rotary Club to report on the good service they have performed. The state of Rotaract is good. A 5k run/walk is planned for May 11th, 2019 to involve the community and bring awareness of homeless pets, spay/neuter, adoption, pets shelters, support NKUT initiative (No-Kill Utah) and more. For more information, please contact Salt Lake Rotaractor president: Natalie Gooding, natalie.goding@gmail.com. 7

Welcome awesome new Rotarian Spencer Ferguson Born in Mt. Pleasant, UT in 1979, and raised in Fillmore, UT, I moved to the big city after high school. I am proudly married to my undoubtedly better half, Bahar. We don t have any children, but do have a 16 year old cat. We really enjoy sports and have a goal of visiting every major sports stadium. I founded Wasatch I.T. in 2002, and my wife and I now run the business together. We ve been fortunate to grow to be among the largest outsourced I.T. firms in the state. 9

Holiday Dinner at Boys and Girls Club By Teri Jensen Salt Lake Rotarians Judy Fang, Amelia Larsen, Karmeen Kulkarni, Kyle Muir, Linda Kruse, Brian Berkelbach, Mark McCashland, and Teri Jensen had a great time serving dinner for the Lied Boys and Girls Club Holiday dinner. This is our fourth year serving the holiday meal. Teri's friends Corrine and Tony joined the group. Mark's wife Trudy came too. Thanks to Trudy's culinary skills, we served a fabulous gravy with turkey and mashed potatoes. Amelia also brought her friend Brandon Mendoza. When you volunteer for Rotary service projects it is nice to include friends. It gives others the opportunity to serve, and it helps spread the word about the work our club does. This dinner is always chaotic, and it is always fun. A few of us joined in with the dancing game. You might know it, when the music stops, FREEZE. Check out Kyle's dance moves. He was the last Rotarian standing. The Boys and Girls Club presented a brand new pair of shoes to all of the children. It was fun to watch the kids receive this special holiday gift. Amelia, Karmeen, and Kyle presented a check to SL Boys and Girls Club for $1000 on behalf of SL Rotary. Amelia took a few minutes to tell the Rotary story. The kids know this money goes directly back into their club and they responded with enthusiastic applause. Remember, SL Rotarians staff the Kids' Café on the third Wednesday each month. We like to have three or four volunteers attend each dinner service. We have open slots for February and March. Please contact Teri Jensen at tjensen@upbslc.com if you'd like to sign up. A few Rotarians have asked about bringing kids to the volunteer events. This monthly dinner service is kid friendly. 17
