3 SAINTS ALIVE MAY 2014 page 3 All Saints hosts 97 homeless guests during 27 th season as PADS shelter The PADS shelter at All Saints was host to 97 individual men, women and children during our 27 th season of caring for homeless persons from our community. The 30-week season, which began in October 2013 ended April 27. In the previous season we were host to 99 individuals. Although we cared for essentially the same number of guests in both seasons, in there was a 12 percent increase in room nights (one guest staying one night) 409 nights compared with 365 in the previous season. But while the number of room-nights rose there were fewer long-term guests who stayed in our shelter 10 or more nights during the season The shelter will reopen October 4. New volunteers adults and high school juniors and seniors are always welcome. For more information about how you can become involved in our ministry to the homeless talk with one of the Site Directors, Monika Fiedler or Tom Germuska, or another members of the PADS Leadership Team. Or send an to PADS@AllSaintsPalatine.org. Volunteer Appreciation Dinner set for Friday, May PADS volunteers, their friends and families will celebrate the successful end of another season of caring with a buffet dinner Fri., May 9. The event will include the premier showing of a new video describing what PADS volunteers do produced by Emily Stearney, a senior at Fremd High School. The event will begin with a meet-and-greet at 5:30 p.m.; dinner about 6 p.m.; and conclude about 7:30 p.m. following showing of the video and brief remarks from representatives of Journeys The Road Home, the agency which provides support services for persons who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless in the Northwest suburbs. More than 100 volunteers who have helped in shelter operations in the past season were sent evite invitations to the event. Volunteers are asked to RSVP to your evite (check your SPAM folder if you haven t seen it) or send an to PADS@AllSaintsPalatine.org If you helped and did not receive an invitation please forgive the oversight and come anyway. As in the past, the spouse, significant other or friend of a volunteer is welcome to join us.
4 page 4 SAINTS ALIVE MAY 2014 A Note from Our Council President As I serve as your president for a second term, I thought I would try my hand at writing my first piece in the ASLC newsletter. Writing is not one of my strong points, but thought I would give it a try. (I would also like to thank Mike Nedzel for his continual reminders for me to do so). I thought I would start my newsletter by recapping As most of you are aware, we, as a congregation, struggled financially. There were various reasons that we did not take in our pledged income, but either way, we fell short. The other thing that our congregation struggled with is a declining attendance and membership primarily due to people moving away from our community. On a brighter note, we at ASLC have a lot to be thankful for and are very blessed. We have two great pastors, an amazing music program, Little Saints is one of the best preschools in the area, and our outreach in our community never seems to stop growing through things like PADS and the other amazing things we do as a congregation. The other thing that amazes me about ASLC is how we, as a congregation, use our talents and love for the church through the many committees that make our church one for all of us to be proud of. So as we move into 2014 the church council discussed our goals based on our struggles from last year, combined with our strengths to tackle these goals. The three goals that we came up with were Staying on track with our budget and be under budget for 2014 and keeping the congregation updated quarterly as we move through the year. 2. The other goal we thought was important was to have a stronger outreach program to share our blessings as a church with others to be a part of. 3. Lastly we thought we needed to increase our involvement and talents at the committee level to enrich our religious experience inward and outward to the members at ASLC and our community. As we try to tackle these goals we hope that all the members in one way or the other will help us to meet these objectives. Maybe it's trying to give a little more financially, serving on a committee that could use your time and talents, or maybe asking a friend to come to church to share in our wonderful ASLC family. As I have seen in my first year as president, this church can accomplish anything if we all work together. Troy DeFranco
5 SAINTS ALIVE APRIL 2014 Page 5 1 st Quarter Financial Update from the Outgoing Treasurer In an effort to keep the congregation more informed about the finances of the church, the treasurer will complete, on a quarterly basis, a financial overview to be printed in the newsletter. This overview will briefly address member offerings, as well as the overall financial situation of the church. Budget 1 st Quarter Actual 1 st Quarter Net Variance Member Pledges $ 113,926 $ 111,365 ($ 2,561) Member Non-pledge $ 13,750 $ 14,825 $ 1,075 Total Member Offerings $ 127,676 $ 126,190 ($ 1,486) Total member offerings collected were nearly 99% of the budgeted amount. Member pledges were slightly below budget, while the member non-pledges were slightly above budget. Budget 1 st Quarter Actual 1 st Quarter Net Variance Total Revenues $ 133,564 $ 133,392 ($ 172) Total Expenses $ 141,665 $ 144,000 ($ 2,335) Net Total (+ / -) ($ 8,101) ( $10,608) ($ 2,507) Although the net total variance in the first quarter was negative, it was overall a good start to the year. The larger than budgeted loss was a direct result of mother nature. With the exception of a few minor variances, the two expenses that were most over budget were utilities expense and snow removal expense. Due to the extreme cold early in the year, the utilities expense for the first quarter was $2,202 greater than budget. For 2014, the entire expense budget for snow removal was $5,000, however in the first quarter alone, we spent $8,749. If these two expenses were more in line with historical levels for the period, our net total variance would have been positive. BUNKO!!!!!!! Committees Need You Do you have a few hours a month to make All Saints a stronger place? We could use your help. You could help by joining a committee. It s not as boring as it sounds. Each committee operates a little differently, but mostly you meet once per month and share your ideas and perhaps take on a small task or two. That s it. But it makes a world of difference. If you d like to help, we could use you with our Worship, Property (building maintenance), Outreach (making All Saints known in the community), Stewardship (helping us use all of our time and talents and treasure wisely), Technology (computers and IT), Financial Support (money, money, money), Learning, Social Ministry and other Committees. Talk with either of the pastors and we ll get you hooked up. 7 Summer is Coming Beginning with Memorial Day weekend (May 24-25), All Saints will be moving to a summer worship schedule. Saturdays, beginning May 24, we will worship at 5:00. The Saturday service is piano-accompanied and a simple "summer-time" liturgy, featuring Holy Communion as always. Sundays, beginning May 25, we will worship at 9 am. These services will feature all of the liturgies and styles that we use all throughout the year. Blessing of Bikes and Wheeled Things At our first Saturday service of the year (May 24), bring your bicycles and scooters and skateboards and motorcycles. We will pray God s blessing for safety and joy this summer season. September Day of Service Last year, All Saints participated along with the entire ELCA in a God s Work, Our Hands Sunday in September. We re going to do it again. If you have a passion for serving in the community and seeing congregations work together, come and help plan. Our first coordination meeting will be Wednesday, June 4 at 7 pm. Come and join! Thanksgiving On Thanksgiving Day, November 27, 2014 All Saints will once again open our doors to serve anyone who needs a place to be for a traditional Thanksgiving meal. Over the past few years, we have fed over 200 people each Thanksgiving. Whether homeless or alone for the holiday, we want everyone to feel welcome at All Saints. Plans again include serving turkey and all the sides from 11-2 in the Gathering Space. We'll need all hands on deck, so make plans for your family's Thanksgiving tradition to include helping to serve others. We'll need folks to invite the community, set up and decorate the space, clean up the space, cook the food, serve the food, procure donations from area businesses, and provide entertainment and hospitality. If you are interested in helping (especially to coordinate) any of these areas or have other great ideas, please contact Pastor Seth. Come together to brainstorm, share ideas, and develop the plans on Tuesday, July 16 at 7 pm. Please let Pastor Seth know if you plan to come to this meeting. We have two baptisms for Sunday, May 11 at the 8:30 service.
