1 THIS WEEK AT FIRST CHRISTIAN CHURCH For the week of November 14, 2018 A Note From Your Pastor Dear Friends, Thanksgiving is an important holiday. Even though it is actually a civic rather than religious holiday, it is full of themes that our faith and other faiths embrace. While it is helpful to have a day each year to point us toward thankfulness, true thankfulness and gratitude are about more than a day on the calendar. They are about a position from which we live. What disciplines of gratitude do you keep? Do you make it a point to write down five things for which you are thankful each night? Do you write notes of thanks to people who do something for you, give something to you, or simply bring you love and joy? Do you go out of the way to use that good habit most of our parents taught us and make a point to say thank you to people who wait on you, those who hold the door, and more? I encourage you not only for this month but as a regular part of your life to find at least one discipline of gratitude that you can keep. For those who share a household with others, perhaps gratitude can become part of your family routine. On Sunday our worship will focus on gratitude. After worship we will sit down and share a meal together enjoying the privilege of having enough (too much, really) to eat and good people to share it with. I hope you are planning to stay and be part of that meal. You are also invited to share an act of gratitude during worship. You are asked to bring $2 to worship. Each bulletin will have an envelope in it labeled for Shelter House. Shelter House is a local homeless shelter. $2 feeds a person who stays there for the day. As we prepare to share a meal, it seems fitting that we also give a gift so others may eat as well. Know that as I reflect on gratitude, I am thankful for each of you. Hope to see you Sunday, Jill PS I will be out of town visiting our older kids and grandkids from the evening of Tuesday, Nov. 20 Saturday, Nov. 24. For pastoral care needs, please contact Linda Flinn ( ) or Laura Kittrell ( ). Thanksgiving Dinner is Sunday, November 18 after Worship We hope you ll be here to enjoy food and fellowship in this season of gratitude! To RSVP and let us know how many will attend, click here. To volunteer to help with set up, preparation, or clean up, click here. To volunteer to bring a salad, vegetable, or dessert, click here. If you would like to make a donation to help with the cost of the meal, envelopes will be on the tables at dinner.

As of today we have raised $3,280 toward our goal! Great job, FCC! Coralville Food Pantry November Collection: Soap and Shampoo The box for these items is in the church entry area by the Mission and Witness bulletin board. We will collect soap and shampoo through November 25. What Shall We Bring? Pledge cards and yellow ministry interest forms are still being accepted. It is helpful for planning if they can be in by November 21. Sunday, November 18, 2018 Scripture: Psalm 100 Sermon: Are We Thankful?
3 This Week at First Christian Church November 14, 2018 Do you like choral singing, but don't have the time to commit to a weekly rehearsal year-round? Consider singing with the Advent Choir during the coming Advent season. Second Annual FCC Holiday Concert Got a talent you'd like to share? You're invited to participate in our second annual FCC Holiday Concert, to be held on Saturday, December 8 at 2:00 p.m. If you sing, play an instrument, dance, write poetry -- whatever your talent, you're welcome to share something with a winter or Christmas/holiday theme. This event is for participants of all ages. We will hold several practices (days and times to be determined) throughout Advent, and will sing once or maybe twice for worship during that time. If you are interested and think you can make it to a practice or two, please contact Laura at (319) or icdisciple.music@gmail.com. Open to singers from Jr. High through adult. Contact Laura at (319) or icdisciple.music@gmail.com if you'd like to sign up to participate.
4 This Week at First Christian Church November 14, 2018 Gifts for Parents Update Due to changes in leadership and some planning challenges, there will be no Gifts for Parents this year. CRC intends for this to simply be a one year break and plans for the event to take place in early December Film Screening Please join Inside Out Reentry Community for a free screening and panel discussion of "Knife Skills", a 2017 Oscar-nominated documentary that follows formerly incarcerated individuals as they train to launch a worldclass French restaurant in Cleveland, Ohio. In this improbable setting, we discover the challenges of people finding their way after release. We come to know three trainees intimately, as well as the restaurant's founder, who is also dogged by his past. They all have something to prove, and all struggle to start new lives - an endeavor as pressured and perilous as the ambitious restaurant launch of which they are a part. #ShowUpForShabbat In light of the recent shooting at Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh, our local synagogue, Agudas Achim, is inviting both Jewish and nonjewish friends and neighbors to worship with them. Their services are Friday nights at 7:30pm (1 hour service) and Saturday mornings at 9:30am (longer service, about 2.5 hours). Agudas Achim Synagogue is located just down the hill from FCC at 401 E. Oakdale Blvd, Coralville. Sunday, November 18, 1:30 3:30pm Coralville Public Library, Schwab Auditorium th St., Coralville We took 7 youth and 2 adults to the regional Chi Rho (6th 8th grades) Retreat at Newton Work Camp Opportunity The group that included Nancy and John McKinstry who went on a work camp to Nicaragua in March is planning a work camp to Puerto Rico during the first week of March in The camp will stay at a Disciples church camp and be organized through Week of Compassion and will cost no more than $1200-$1500 per person including transportation (flying out of CR) lodging, and food. Anyone interested in going is asked to talk with Nancy or John, who will help interested persons to stay informed as the camp gets organized. Keys A key symbolizes the church s authority to forgive sins in Jesus name. In Matthew 16:19 (ESV), Jesus says to Peter, who would come to represent the Christian church, I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.
