2 PASTOR S PEN REV. KEVIN J BEDFORD JANUARY 2013 Greetings and Happy New Year, Most New Year s Resolutions are doomed to be broken within the first 30 days of the New Year. Often they are made in haste and usually are not taken very seriously beyond a few days after they are blurted out. As we enter 2013, I would like to suggest five very simple New Year s Resolutions we should make and keep. 1. Resolve to pray to the Lord frequently Colossians 4:2 Continue steadfastly in prayer, being watchful in it with thanksgiving. Prayer is a powerful resource that God has given to everyone. Ask yourself this question, Is prayer my steering wheel or my spare tire? Make prayer your steering wheel. 2. Resolve to study the Bible - Colossians 3:16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. Participate in Sunday School, Bible Study or Small Group studies. Rev. D.L. Moody s wise words about scripture are something we should all keep in mind, Studying the Bible can keep you from sin or sin will keep you from the Bible. 3. Resolve to attend church weekly - Acts 20:7 On the first day of the week, we gathered to together to break bread.. The early church gathered at least weekly for fellowship, prayer, encouragement and admonition. They knew they wouldn t make it without the support of each other. Believers are like burning embers in a fire. If you pull away one of the embers it will eventually grow cold and burn out. But if it stays within the body of burning embers it will keep hot and stay lit. 4. Resolve to be open to the Holy Spirit Acts 1:8 You will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, Judea, and Samaria and to the end of the earth. God will speak to us this year on a host of matters. Will we listen and follow God s direction?

3 5. Resolve to be a Peacemaker Matthew 5:9 Blessed are the peacemakers for they shall be called the children of God. Make your home a place of peace. Make your church a place of peace. Make your community a place of peace. Let your family and significant others know how much you love them. You are a peacemaker! No one can take peace away from you when you step forward and offer it first. Ask God to put his peace in your thoughts, and put real, meaningful power in your life. Let s review: Pray to the Lord Study your Bible Attend church weekly Be open to the Holy Spirit s guidance Be a Peacemaker Happy New Year, Pastor Bedford

4 Capital Campaign Capital Campaign contributions can be made through your 2013 envelopes in your packet. February Newsletter Newsletter Deadline: January 28, Please mark that date and get all enclosures in to the church office so that they may be included in the February Newsletter. Update Your Mailing Address Today! Return to sender. Address unknown. No such number. No such zone. Don t let your important Third Baptist Church letters get lost in the mail. Update your address today by stopping by the church office. Several important letters may be sent to members in the coming months and we want to make sure we have your correct mailing address. Weekly Bulletin Bulletin Deadline is Tuesday at 3:30 pm. Please note the deadline and get all enclosures in to the church office so that they may be included in the bulletin. Voucher Request Organizations and auxiliaries desiring a church check must complete a voucher request at least 2 weeks before required funds disbursement date. This will allow adequate time to input payment request into the Bill-Pay system and have funds mailed to the appropriate party. All voucher requests must be reviewed by the Senior Pastor before funds are disbursed. Flowers may be placed on the Altar in memory of your loved one, in celebration of a special day or event or by clubs and organizations of the church for various occasions. Please contact the church office and select your choice of Sundays. Addresses: Thanks to the members who have made their addresses available to the church office. It proves to be most helpful in getting information out to all as soon as something occurs. To those who have not done so, please take the time to put your address on a note and leave in the offering plate. Please remember to check your to avoid it from being full and rejecting items being sent. Cancellations! Watch your local TV stations for church activity cancellations due to inclement weather

Margaret J. Brown, President Ladies Bible Study by Priscilla Shirer "One in a Million", journey to your promised land. From the pew to the pavement! Ever week millions of believers fill the pews of the church and hear about the greatness and power of God. They are told that they can experience it, yet few ever do. If you hunger to experience His power, hear His voice, and live in the abundance promised to you, then this 6 week study is for you! You will need your bible and the One in a Million member book (workbook). This book is White in color and is $ tax. You can purchase it from the Lifeway Christian Bookstore on Talmadge Road. The Wednesday morning class will begin on the Wednesday January 16, 2013 at 10 am sharp! The evening class will also begin in January. Watch the bulletin for day and time! 6 Dear Church Family. Hello Third Baptist, it's Kayla Huston, and I have some news I would like to share with you. I have been invited to join the people to people program on yet another adventure. This yeari have been invited to go with the program to Sicily, and Greece. I have been invited to go on the trip since the fourth grade, but have never been able to go due to finacial setbacks. However, seeing that this is my senior year in high school, this is my last chance to go on the trip as a student ambassador. So I am asking you, my church family, for help. Overall this trip costs about $7-8,000, and my first downpayment is due at the end of January. I understand some of you are in my situation and cannot give, I would still appreciate any ideas you have to help me fundraise. Also, hands on help with with raising the money, or getting the word out to others to help me raise the money, would be greatly appreciated.
