3 The Pastor s Message It is my pleasure to greet you on the occasion of our 145 th Church Anniversary Observance! We ve come this far by faith and God has blessed our congregation immensely. Our founding members planted those seeds of faith through which God is blessing us today. This congregation has a glorious past and God has shown me that His expectations of us are even greater today. As our theme for the year states, we are Discovering Our Place In The Body Of Christ and in doing so, we give all glory, honor and praise to God alone. I acknowledge His divine influence in all that we do and the power of the Holy Spirit in every step we take. As the leader of this great congregation, I am acutely aware of my responsibility and strive to conform to the image of the greatest leader in history, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Johnson, Sr Providence Missionary Baptist Church, Rockingham, NC He was born March 30, 1979 in Orange, New Jersey Matriculated the Orange Public School System Educated at: Virginia Union University (B.A.) Richmond Virginia Seminary (M.A.) Shaw University School of Divinity (M.Div) Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary (S.T.M.) Drew University School of Theology in Madison, NJ, where he was conferred the Doctor of Ministry degree in May 12 of this year. Licensed to preach at the age of 14 by the St. Paul s Baptist Church of Elizabeth, NJ Ordained to preach at the age of 19 by the New Hope Association of North-Central New Jersey He is a skilled organist and pianist A Member of Greater Galilee Baptist Church of Charlotte, NC The Director of Music for the General Baptist State Convention of North Carolina He is the First Vice Moderator of the Pee Dee Educational Missionary Baptist Association He is the Author of Autonomous: A 21 st Century Look at the African American Baptist Church. He is the Husband of the former Mildred Garcia He is the father of LaMont, Jr., Tiana Carmella, and Andre Nicholas He is the proud Pastor of the Providence Baptist Church of Rockingham, NC

6 Church History Being guided by the Spirit of God, a desire aroused in the hearts of the people to establish a church. Thus, in 1795, a church named Siloam was established, but this church was generally referred to as Foster Creek. Its membership was composed of an integrated congregation. About 1856, a new building became necessary for the comfort of the Baptist congregation. George Hackett offered one-half acre of land free, and to sell one-half acre. This offer was accepted. This acre of land is located one and a half miles from Foster Creek and the present structure, completed in 1857, and was named Berea. Berea retained possession of the Foster Creek branch of faith until 1867 when permission was requested and granted that the black members could worship there after the Baptist resurge. On the fifth Sunday in September, thirty-nine black members were dismissed from Berea, and on that day organized and held services at Foster Creek. The organized Foster Creek Baptist Church called its first minister, the Reverend Samuel Quarles. Rev. Quarles was widely recognized in his day as an organizer and community leader. Succeeding Reverend Quarles was the Reverend Fountain M. Perkins. Rev. Perkins was Louisa s representative to the House of Delegates until Dr. D.M. Vassar assumed leadership of Foster Creek for twenty-five valiant years. Dr. Vassar administration in this church added much to the physical appearance of the structure. After Dr. Vassar, the Reverend B. H. Gales led Foster Creek for approximately three years. Reverend H. E. Williams served from 1922 to Reverend R.J. Green was pastor from 1926 to 1929, during this time more improvements were made to the church structure. Reverend D.J. Bradford served from 1929 to In 1934, Reverend H.E. Williams returned for an additional two years.

7 Reverend C. L. Motley served from 1944 until his tragic death due to an automobile accident in Reverend W.A. Schultz became the pastor in June The structure was improved during his time. Rev. Schultz was pastor during the great flood, when 6 to 8 feet of water was inside and around the church. Reverend Warren A. Evans became pastor in 1961 and served for approximately seven years. Our 1 st addition, which houses our bathrooms was completed and the baptizing pool was installed. Reverend Andrew L. Kearney was pastor from 1978 to A public address system was established, a central air conditioning unit was installed, a Hammond organ was donated. Reverend John C. Wright was appointed in We begin holding worship services four Sundays a month and the J.C. Wright Gospel Ensemble and Junior Choir was established. A few of the many accomplishments the Lord blessed us with were stained glass windows, remodeling the entire sanctuary, new carpet, an additional air condition unit and a new choir room. Reverend Kevin Cook served from 1997 to Rev. Cook added a new members class and a youth ministry. Two new additions were started along with the tape ministry. Reverend Michael R. Crawley, Jr. was installed as pastor in The new additions was completed. Reverend Pantheir Whiting was elected as the Youth Minister and a drummer was chosen. Praise in Motion praise dancers and Out of the Mouth of Babes Choir was established. The yearly Community Extravaganza was established. The FCBC Vision Statement was prepared. 10 In Memory Of Our Deceased Members Goodbyes are not forever. Goodbyes are not the end. They simply mean I'll miss you. Until we meet again! Special Recognition for the Church Oldest Living Male and Female Bro William McGhee William McGhee was born to Alex and Susie McGhee, May 1922 in Louisa County. He had three sisters and two brothers. He attended Louisa County Public School. Mr. McGhee joined Foster Creek at a young age. He served on the Trustee Board for many years until his health started to fail. In September of 1948, he married his sweetheart Ella Buskfield. They had three children, Beverly, Gloria and Irvin (deceased). He is grandfather to six grandchildren. Mr. McGhee was self-employed, he and his brothers Otho and Calvin Sr., owned and operated, The McGhee Brothers Lumber Company. He retired Spring of Mr. McGhee also served as a board member for the Virginia Community Bank and the Louisa Farm Bureau Insurance Agency. Mr. McGhee is a man of few words, but has a very generous heart serving his family, friends and neighbors. He loved fishing and hunting. Sis Mamie McKeathon Mamie Easton was born to William and Georgia Bishop Easton, Feb 25,1911 in Louisa County, the oldest of five siblings. At an early age she joined Byrd Olly Baptist Church, she and her family joined the Foster Creek Baptist Church and remained faithful members. She was educated in the Louisa county public schools. At the age of 17, Mamie moved to Vaux hall, N.J. to find work that paid higher wages. In 1928, she married Edward Melton (deceased) to whom two children, Bernice (deceased) and Willard (deceased) were born. Mamie later met Claude McKeathon, they wed in They worked many years before retiring and relocating back to Louisa in They were happily married for 30 years until his death in She stated, the worst part of her life has been the deaths of two husbands, three grandchildren and her children. Her son passed in 2004 and her daughter passed in Her extended and close knit family includes nine grandchildren, over 25 great grandchildren and over 44 greatgreat grandchildren, six generations of a loving family. Mamie still resides at her home place with her grandson Kenneth (Jimmy) Smith. She is assisted and cared for by other family members. She enjoys talking about the struggles and the good times of life. Sharing memories about the many jobs she has worked and the wonderful people she has come to know. She looks forward to communion, scripture reading and especially singing.

For the Historic Foster Creek Baptist Church, our 145th Anniversary is a tremendous milestone. Today, we celebrate a rich history and the promise of a brilliant future. God has blessed us and is continuing to keep his arms around us. As we remember the cherished deeds of the past, let us not lose sight of the brilliant vision for tomorrow. When we "Conform to His Image, God can use us even more in his awesome and miraculous plan We were excited and honored to be part of such an important event. It is with this sense of gratitude that we would first like to thank Pastor Crawley for having confidence in our ability to lead such an important phase of this year s activities. Secondly, I d like to thank our Guest Pastor and his congregation. Thirdly, we must thank the many members and friends of the church for joining in this celebration and for supporting us abundantly. Finally and most importantly, we must thank God for answering prayers and we will forever praise Him for divine inspiration that never fails. We are grateful to the Holy Spirit for leading us to humbly submit to this remarkable endeavor and for revealing the right path to take with joy and thanksgiving.
