1 SAINTS ALIVE Mar.-Apr. Year Vol. #13 No. #2 Dear Saints, I want to share with you some good news! We have entered into a partnership with Good Samaritan Network. They are a local ministry that provides many types of assistance to the needy in our community. Their ministry includes a thrift shop, a food pantry, some housing, credit and budget counseling and financial assistance. Their mission statement is: To Rescue, Redeem, Rebuild, Restore, and Resend the hopeless, homeless, hurting, unused, and underused in the spirit of the good Samaritan as depicted in Luke 10. You may be familiar with Chelsea House which is a faith-based residential program for women and single mom families. It is one of the many services offered through Good Samaritan. Part of this partnership includes the creation of an Alms Fund a designated fund through which financial assistance will be offered to those who have been referred to us by Good Samaritan. As a result of their many years of experience with helping those in need, they have an excellent vetting process through which we can be assured that the money we offer in assistance will be something that will truly help and not enable. When we, at All Saints, receive a request for financial assistance, the individual (or family) will be referred to Good Samaritan. If they feel that meeting a financial need is the best way to help them, they will contact us for a contribution. It s important that we be good stewards of the funds that are entrusted to us at All Saints for the purpose of helping others and we believe that this partnership will allow us to do this well. The vestry has voted to seed this designated Alms Fund with $250 and the congregation is welcomed and encouraged to contribute to it as well so that when we are called upon to help, we will be ready and able to do so. Please pray that this partnership will allow us at All Saints to show the love of Christ to our neighbors and open up new opportunities for us to be His hands and feet in our community. In Christ s love and with mine, Mtr. Travis+ WHERE OUR OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD SHOEBOXES WERE SENT - Jean Williams Recently, I tracked where our 2017 Operation Christmas Child shoeboxes were sent. I discovered that they went to the West African countries of Benin (Dec 6, 2017) and Burkina Faso (Dec. 7, 2017). In fact, 81,600 boxes were scheduled to go to Benin and 285,600 to Burkina Faso. The facts below will give you a mental picture of what these countries are like and help you realize some of their great needs. 2 BENIN, formerly Dahomey, is a country in West Africa. In 1960, Dahomey gained full independence from France. It has had a tumultuous history since then, with many different democratic governments, military coups, and military governments. Borders: It is bordered by Togo to the west, Nigeria to the east, and Burkina Faso and Niger to the north. Religion: The largest religious group in Benin is Roman Catholicism, Benin Children followed closely by Islam, Vodun and Protestantism. About the people: The majority of Benin's population lives in the south. The population is young, with a life expectancy of 62 years. About 42 African ethnic groups live in this country. Recent migrations have brought other African nationals to Benin that include Nigerians, Togolese, and Malians. The foreign community also includes many Lebanese and Indians involved in trade and commerce. Climate: Benin's climate is hot and humid. Annual rainfall in the coastal area averages about 51 inches. Economy: The economy of Benin is dependent on subsistence agriculture, cotton production, and regional trade. Cotton accounts for 40% of GDP and roughly 80% of official export receipts. The main driver of growth is the agricultural sector, with cotton being the country s main export, while services continue to contribute the largest part of GDP largely because of Benin s geographical location, enabling trade, transportation, transit and tourism activities with its neighboring states. The gross national income (all income of a country's residents and businesses) of Benin was $890 per capita in [The GNI per capita in the U.S in 2016 was $6,810.] Literacy: The literacy rate in Benin is among the lowest in the world. In 2015 it was estimated to be 38.4% (49.9% for males and 27.3% for females). BURKINA FASO, formerly The Republic of Upper Volta, was renamed in 1958 and its current name means "land of honest men. It gained its independence from France in The country has significant reserves of gold, but has faced domestic and external concern over the state of its economy and human rights. Borders: Burkina Faso is surrounded by six countries: Mali to the north; Niger to the east; Benin to the southeast; Togo and Ghana to the south; and Ivory Coast to the southwest. Climate: Burkina Faso has a primarily tropical climate with two very distinct seasons. In the rainy season, the country receives between 60 and 90 cm (23.6 and 35.4 in) of rainfall; in the dry season, the harmattan a hot dry wind from the Sahara blows. Economy: Agriculture represents 32% of its gross domestic product and occupies 80% of the working population. It consists mostly of rearing livestock. There is mining of copper, iron, manganese, gold, cassiterite (tin ore), and phosphates. These operations provide employment and generate international aid. Gold production increased 32% in 2011 at six gold mine sites, making Burkina Faso the fourth-largest gold producer in Farmers in Burkina Africa, after South Africa, Mali and Ghana. The gross national income per capita in 2012 was $670. Arts: Burkina Faso also hosts the International Art and Craft Fair, Ouagadougou. It is better known by its French name as SIAO, Le Salon International de l' Artisanat de Ouagadougou, and is one of the most important African handicraft fairs. The people: In 2012, the average life expectancy was estimated at 57 for male and 59 for female. In 2014, the median age of its inhabitants was 17. In Burkina Faso it is estimated that there are currently over 1.5 million children who are at risk of food insecurity and around 350,000 children are in need of emergency medical assistance. Stunted growth as a result of food insecurity is a severe problem in Burkina Faso, affecting at least a third of the population from 2008 to Additionally, stunted children, on average, tend to complete less school than children with normal growth development, further contributing to the low levels of education of the Burkina Faso population. Education: High school costs approximately $50 per year, which is far above the means of most Burkinabè families. Boys receive preference in schooling; as such, girls' education and literacy rates are far lower than their male counterparts. 2

3 WALK FOR LIFE Women s Pregnancy Center All Saints Anglican Team raised $325 for the 2018 Walk for Life. This event is the annual fundraiser for A Women's Pregnancy Center - a local ministry supported by our church. The All Saints Team (Renee Bell, Mtr. Travis, Cheryl Jackson and Kleehammer) joined hundreds of local Christians on a beautiful Saturday morning to walk two miles at the Tallahassee Automobile Museum. It was a wonderful event for a wonderful cause. Thank you to all who contributed! WOMEN S PREGNANCY CENTER NEEDS BABY ITEMS ACNA EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE MEETING Mtr. Travis attended the ACNA's Executive Committee meeting in Costa Mesa, California in February. She serves as the Provincial Secretary and is a former member of the Executive Committee. In her role, she is responsible for taking minutes at the Provincial meetings and providing historical data upon request to the Archbishop and various task forces. She will also be attending the ACNA's Provincial Council meeting which will be held after the GAFCON gathering in Jerusalem in June. There is still time to contribute. We will be taking the items to the Center after Easter. 3

4 GAFCON 10 YEARS AGO, the American Anglican Council helped organize the most significant event in the history of modern Anglicanism, the 2008 Global Anglican Future Conference (GAFCON). Instead of participating in the Archbishop of Canterbury s Lambeth Conference which had become compromised by its inclusion of provinces outside the bounds of Christian teaching over 1,000 representatives met in Jerusalem in June 2008 to chart a way forward for biblical Anglicanism. The weeklong GAFCON conference culminated in a restatement of Anglican teachings, the Jerusalem Declaration, and a call for a new province to form in North America. The Anglican Church in North America would form the following year. 10 years later and we are going back to Jerusalem. The third GAFCON gathering will take place June Many things have changed since the original GAFCON took place. In fact, many of the leaders at the original meeting have since gone on to retirement with a new generation of leaders emerging. The Anglican Church in North America s current Archbishop, The Most Rev. Dr. Foley Beach, was a parish priest from outside Atlanta at the time. The Rev. Neil Lebhar, a priest from North Florida, led a team of volunteers that helped the American Anglican Council register the conference s 1,200 participants. Today, he s known as Bishop Neil Lebhar of the Gulf Atlantic Diocese which, by the way, is a diocese that didn t exist at the time. Yes, a lot has changed since then but there are a few things that haven t. False teaching continues to invade the worldwide church and threaten its witness to the good news of Jesus Christ. The American Anglican Council continues to promote, empower and defend Christcentered Anglicanism across the world. Over the last 10 years, many of our brothers and sisters in the Anglican Communion have continued to further an Anglican Christianity defined by biblical truth, but the need to resist false gospels remains. During this conference, the AAC will be helping with communications and telling the story of so many faithful Christians who attend GAFCON. We invite you to watch our website, AmericanAnglican.org, and sign up for our s to stay informed on what happens. You ll also want to keep up with other areas of renewal that we are working in. From high-level strategic planning that helps network biblical Anglicans to church revitalization workshops for individual congregations in need of revival, the AAC works for the growth of biblical Anglicanism everywhere. Behind the scenes, you ll find us doing even more. We will be working with others to provide more effective ways and means for biblical Anglican bishops, clergy and lay leaders to band together to obey Christ s call to make disciples of all nations. We ll be working to bring prayer warriors together to train and pray for the days ahead and much more. There s one more thing that hasn t changed over the years and that is the importance of people like you who support this reformation. GAFCON, the Anglican Church in North America, Church Revitalization, Clergy Leadership Training none of this would happen without the generous financial gifts that have furthered the mission of healthy and faithful Anglicanism for over 20 years. 4

5 During this year s GAFCON event, the AAC will be helping with the conference s communications and we will also be producing our own accounts and interviews of what happens there. We have found that keeping people informed, especially on events that they couldn t otherwise travel to, is a great means of furthering this reformation. We anticipate spending $15,000 for our service to this important event and to share with and encourage our constituency (like you)! I thank you for already supporting this ministry in Your gifts are being put to work to ensure a faithful Anglican future, in America and worldwide. Would you consider a special gift to support our work at the upcoming Global Anglican Future Conference in Jerusalem? Finally, we would value your prayers for this year s historic conference. Pray with us for a renewed sense of mission, for the encouragement that comes from being together with biblically faithful brothers and sisters and that the Anglican Church, and God s Kingdom would be impacted immeasurably. The need to promote and defend Christ-centered Anglicanism will continue until our Lord and Savior returns to earth. At that time, we will be able to say, as the Apostle Paul did, I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. (2 Tim 4:7) God bless you and thank you for joining with the American Anglican Council to see Christ proclaimed among the greater Anglican Communion around the world! 5
