2 PRESIDENTS MESSAGE I wish all a thankful Thanksgiving and a very Merry Christmas. I pray good health and healing to all. It is that time of year when celebrations and special events are on every calendar. This being our last newsletter of 2018 brings reflections of what the club has done and anticipation of the coming year s events and fellowship. We each, as club members, need to give Jim Clock a heartfelt round of applause for his dedication and tireless work in producing a superb newsletter each month and notifications to all events and special notices as needed. Let s give him December off, thanks Jim. I would like to express my appreciation to the board members for their support. Vice President Steve Wolff, Secretary David Higdon, and Treasure Gary Barth have been supportive and handled their official duties as the professionals they are. Then it is hats off to the membership for your participation in the meetings, cruise nights, and tours this physical year. It s been a great ride. Anita and I are back in Branson, this time for the Christmas shows. Five shows in four days but we will enjoy each. We saw Samson at the Sight and Sound Theatres last night and it was spectacular. The main reason we are here is to winterize the RV but we always enjoy taking in the various shows. See you at the November meeting. 3 CALENDAR: Nov 24 Group visit to Big Creek Country Show, starts 7:30 Dec 01 Christmas party at Heriford House in Independence Dec 13 Cruise night at the Crown Center, 6:30PM Jan 10 Cruise night to be determined Jan 25 Regular monthly meeting and POT LUCK dinner 6:30 VINTAGE MOTOR CAR CLUB OF AMERICA KANSAS CITY CHAPTER MONTHLY MEETING October 26, 2018 The October, 2018, meeting of the Vintage Motor Car Club of America was held October 26, 2018 at the home of John and Cheryl Barnes. The meeting was called to order by President Dan Richardson at 4:50 P.M. The meeting was held at the final stop of a progressive dinner which was attended by 30 members. Dan called for health reports: Cheryl Delmont gave us an update on her condition Dave Higdon updated his health including a recent bout with low hemoglobin Bob Gentry reported on a bout with Aquagenic Urticaria a form of water allergy Ray Council brought us up to date on the condition of arthritis in his wrist Dan Richardson announced the recent death of long time member Paul Johnson. We are all sorry to hear this and we will miss him. It was reported that Paul Gish has moved to John Knox Village. A secretary report was requested. The secretary responded that the minutes were in the latest issue of the Distributor. Mike Welsh moved to accept the minutes as published. The motion passed. The treasurer s report was next on the agenda. Treasurer Barth reported that the Branson trip and Pizza night were the major issues reflecting the treasury. Steve Wolff moved to accept the report as presented. The motion carried. As an outgrowth of the treasurer s report, Dan and Anita Richardson were congratulated and thanked for putting together an excellent trip to Branson.

4 Ray Council advised that there was a link on our website to pictures from the trip. Dan advised that Faith Presbyterian Church was discontinuing services December 31, 2018, and we would probably need to search for new meeting location. However, it was next reported that Jerry Crabtree, a trustee of the church, has said that we will be okay for another year. John Barnes was reminded to reserve Waterfall Park for our annual Breakfast in the Park meeting. John said he was on it. Upcoming events include: November 8 Cruise Night at Tuscono s in Buckner December 1, Christmas dinner at Hereford House in Independence Dan announced that Duke Mason will be appearing at Big Creek Theatre on November 24 and asked who might be interested in attending. Following a show of hands, Dan passed around a sheet for those interested so he could reserve a block of seats. Gary Barth moved to give Dan and Anita Richardson $50.00 to help pay for their expenses in setting up the Branson trip. The motion passed unanimously. Dan reminded us that annual dues are now payable. National dues are $40.00 and local dues are $ Jim Erickson asked for the floor to give special thanks to Jim Clock and Bob Saderstrom for special assistance they have given him during his time of recovery from medical issues. The meeting was adjourned at 5:45 P.M. Respectfully submitted David Higdon, Secretary NOVEMBER CRUISE NIGHT The weather forecasters began early this morning warning of an impending snowfall for the area. Considering their track record I was not completely convinced until we started having snow flurries. These flurries intensified and looked rather ominous but fortunately temperatures stayed steady above freezing. With our President out of town I checked with the Vice President to see if he wanted me to send out a notice cancelling our cruise night. Decision was made to leave it up to the members. Even with the wet, dark streets with flurries continuing we managed to have a great attendance at Tuscono s in Buckner. Seventeen in all were present, including two guests. Those braving the

5 weather Ray Council, Mike Welsh, Steve and Debbie Wolff, John and Cheryl Barnes, Bob and Eileen Saderstrom, Larry and Cheryl Delmont and Larry s brother and sister-inlaw, Maurica Campbell, Bob Gentry, Dave and Wanda Tope and Jim Clock. VMCCA PROGRESSIVE DINNER SATURDAY---OCTOBER 27, 2018, 1:00 PM What a great event! Why has it taken so long to revive this activity? I believe the thirtythree members attending are what made this such a great success. Four member households (Higdon s, Clock s, Barth s, and Barnes) were open to welcome members for however long their portion of the meal and visiting took. With the progressive dinner beginning at the home of Dave and Linda Higdon on Lake Lotawana at 1:00PM, moving to the home of Jim and Connie Clock followed by Gary and Dorothy Barth s home, both in Lee s Summit and ending in Independence at John and Cheryl Barnes, we covered approximately 33 miles to complete all courses. We had quite a few antique cars following the route as the weather was absolutely beautiful for the last weekend in October. Ending the day at the home of John and Cheryl Barnes for dessert followed by our regular monthly business meeting.

MEMBERS & MORE At the Kansas City Automotive Museum for the November exhibit in the Drivein, come see a group of camper trailers from an Appleby pop-up to a Spartan 24 footer. Bob Saderstrom sends in this interesting, but rather complex, explanation of the Chrysler Turbo Encabulator you will laugh - Meeting refreshments: November 16 Vaneta Beeson and Anita Richardson HAPPENINGS AT THE KANSAS CITY AUTOMOTIVE MUSEUM This month is quite a divergence from the Kansas City Automotive Museum's "normal" routine (if you consider months that feature motorcycles, station wagons, Austin Healeys, custom cars and Cub Scout Pinewood Derby championships a "normal" routine). We have Camper Trailers (and a tent on wheels) dotting the Drive-In landscape in November. Who knew that there was a very large contingent of enthusiasts for not only using campers to camp in, but to restore, show and have competitions with? I certainly did not, but I do now!! Our display ranges from a diminutive 10 ft camping trailer complete with a similar sized boat on top with its matching '56 Ford station wagon tow vehicle, to a 24 ft long Spartan trailer that has been completely restored and is as shiny as a new chrome wrench. The terms "canned hams" and "tear drops" are also bandied about by these enthusiasts.

9 The November monthly exhibit is a great display of rescued Americana. They have been lovingly restored by owners, craftsmen and craftswomen who have searched the country for the correct door hardware, light fixture or period perfect (1940s to 1970s) table, chairs, and dinnerware to complete their trailer's particular place in traveling history. 10 ***The following is a poem written by a member of the Hunting family longtime members and supporters of the Kansas City Chapter - and submitted to Mike Welsh BUT I WAS RAISED ON MODEL A S Warren Hunting 4/15/2018 Cars today are so complex, they can really be a pain in the neck. So crowded and cramped under the hood, you can t tell what s bad when it s under what s good! And what is bad, it s hard to know, til some computer tells you so. And then you need some special part before you can get the thing to start! But I was raised on model A s. While I was a kid, dad was into cars. A model A for sale soon might be ours. Ford s Tudor, Fordor, Business Coupe, Pickup, Roadster, joined the group. We drug in a one-and one-half ton, and shortly got that truck to run. I drove the Touring to Jefferson City, and won a trophy. (Kinda pretty.) I d carry the spare parts right along, and tools to fix whatever went wrong. And driving home, in that summer heat, replaced the condenser from under the seat. We had an orphan car with some parts gone, but a Model A carburetor went right on. The A s were accessible, not like today with tubing and wiring and stuff in the way. One morning while driving toward St. Louis, some teeth from the timing gear came loose. A nearby garage had an A timing gear that had hung on their wall for many a year. I was glad I had my tool box load, and swapped out the gear on the side of the road. But I was raised on the Model A s. Popular Mechanics Magazine asked its auto readers Describe the perfect machine. And later they printed several replies, from several auto enthusiast guys. The one I remember, still today: Bring back Henry Ford s old Model A! There s only three changes they should make: more powerful engine, and better brake!... And a streamlined body. He d also say. But I was raised on the Model A. For Christmas one year, wife Jeanie gave, a Model A firetruck, from its junkyard grave. It took a few years of blood, sweat, and tears; rust repairs, and tires bought in pairs, and I had to rebuild the rusty oil pump, where water had stood in the oil pan sump. Plugged a hole in the rusted out oil pan, and poured in new oil, can after can. The welded up driveshaft finally done, a test round the barn proved the truck would run. In the middle of Kansas, on my birthday, Jeanie bought me a tractor, homemade from an A. It didn t take much to get it to run, and we took it to tractor shows,... just for fun. You see, I ve been raised on the Ford Model A s. So I ponder, now, as I write this today,... do you have a discarded, old Model A?
