We had a good turnout at the Taste of the Mountains in Madison and all seemed to have a good time. The Vintage Route 1 event was also well attended with most of the cars on display being from our club. There was a steady flow of people through the display and more activity in the park during this the second year of the event. It would have been better, had the lot been paved rather than mostly gravel and dust. Maybe by next year the City can get farther along with the park development and get the paving done. We had a good time at the Merrymans s garage tour and luncheon wish to thank them for their hospitality. I have heard about some members saying they know little about me. So I will give you some of my history. I am a fifth generation Californian with my mother s side of the family arriving during the gold rush. They were gold miners, both placer and underground, had peach orchards and a general store in the Placerville and New Town areas in the Sierra foothills. The general store still stands and is a county historical site. Another part of that side of the family emigrated from the Azores where WHAT S INSIDE THIS MONTH they were fishermen and farmed in the Hayward region of the San Francisco Bay area. At one time they used a mule team to move a two story farmhouse onto their property. My father s side of the family is mostly from the York, PA area and has been in the USA since the 1600s. I graduated from California State University with a degree in industrial technology (photography and graphic design). That was in the summer of 1972 and I was drafted into the Army in the last draft that year. I was a still photographer in the 92 nd Engr. Battalion at Fort Stewart GA. While there I purchased my 54 MG in Savannah GA, and towed it back to Ft. Stewart in a U-Haul trailer behind a 1972 Toyota. After the service, I returned to CA, and lived throughout the state. I belonged to the CORSA Corvair club in Fresno for a number of years. I later moved to Sacramento, and while there I was a docent at the Towe Ford Museum for a number of years until I moved to Virginia for a job promotion. We built our last home in Elk Grove CA, which I designed and acted as my own general contractor with lots of help from my wife. I was involved in doing the plumbing, electrical, laid a concrete tile roof, did (Continued on page 3) For more club news and photos Visit Our Web Site Nora Aftel, Webmaster Madison Fall Festival Page 3 Route 1 Festival Page 4

My wife and I are both Federal Civil Service retirees, she from the Corps of Engineers and I from Social Security where I spent over a decade working at the Appeals Council, in Falls Church, as a senior hearings and appeals analyst for several judges. I have a grown daughter who lives in Richmond and works with autistic children. My wife, Kaye, and I have traveled to all but three states and to all the continents other than Antarctica We are planning a trip later this year to Kansas, Iowa and Wisconsin to complete all fifty states. - Ken Loucks, HFR AACA President CARDS & FLOWERS No report for the month of September. TASTE OF THE MOUNTAINS FESTIVAL 2014 A good time was had by all once again this year at the Taste of the Mountains Festival in Madison, Virginia, which took place on the Saturday of Labor Day weekend. The club had approximately 20 cars on display. It was a little hot and muggy, but not nearly as bad as some years, and the rain stayed away all day (unlike the previous two years). We had our same spot outside the library that gave us plenty of good shady spots to sit, but still allowed for good foot traffic from spectators attending the festival. As in years past there was plenty of interest from the spectators in our cars.

VINTAGE ROUTE 1 TOUR AND COMMUNITY DAY Our club provided a display of antique cars for the Historic Route 1 Tour and Community Day, which took place on Saturday, September 7th. This is the second year our club participated in this event. We showed our cars at the Riverfront Park off of Sophia St. in Downtown Fredericksburg. The event captured the 20 th Century history of Fredericksburg from the perspective of Route 1. In addition to our vehicle display, there were archeological displays, a vintage fashion show, a self-guided walking tour, collections of oral history, and children s activities.
