Lecturer s Message Andy Maguire newsletter@kofc6083.org During this past Columbian year many of the brother Knights attended meetings and helped or assisted with many of the activities, such as the Parish Picnic, Sunday Breakfasts, Valentine's Dinner and Dance, and others. The success of our programs and activities, and the success of Council, rely on the support and participation of our members. At times it seems as though we have a huge number of volunteers, but more of the membership needs to get involved. Attendance at council meetings, though encouraging, always hovered around 20. With a membership of 231 that number should be much higher. The current Grand Knight, Michael Borynec, and previous Grand Knights have tried to keep meetings short and exciting, and most times with great success. Many say I don't like meetings in general, or long and drawn out meetings. The intent is to have shorter, informative and exciting meetings, allowing time for some fraternalship following the meeting. We do need to get to know each other better, and a little fraternalship may help with that. The year-end-bareque was another of those opportunities for fraternalship, with our spouse. Another opportunity to meet and get to know our fellow parishioners are the once-amonth Friday POT-LUCK-DINNERS. Robert Gaudet and the parish are doing an excellent job organizing and presenting these dinners. The Knights of Columbus is a member of this parish, and as parishioners this is another opportunity. It may not have anything to do with the Knights of Columbus, but we, as members of the parish should find ourselves quite excited about being able to attend and participate, and especially support our parish. daryl.boyden@kofc6083.org District Deputy s Message Brothers: Where has the year gone. As I reflect over my first year as the District Deputy I cannot believe how fast the year has gone by. Thank you to each and every member of our Council 6083 for all of the Page 1 Knightly News July 2018

2 dedication and commitment to give what you can of yourself in service to our parish community. The countless hours of volunteering has enable our Council to remain front and center in providing support to our parish priest and our community as a whole. Without your support we would have been able to provide the opportunity to continue building the strong fellowship we have with our faith families. Our Pancake Breakfasts, The Valentines Dance, Blood Donor Drives, Parish Picnic, Memorial Mass, Christmas Eve Parking Marshals and many more events. We are truly blessed and as we look forward towards the upcoming Columbian year I am extremely excited over the joint celebration we have planned with the Catholic Women s League (Celebrating their 60 Anniversary) and our 50 th Anniversary of our Charter on October 13, This is a tremendous milestone for each of our respective Councils. The marking of these milestone with the commissioning of two stained glass windows, to be installed in East Windows of the Foyer is an overt recognition of our Service to our Community for all to enjoy The event is open to all parishioners and general public. Sales will commence the end of August through to the event day. I know with your help this will be another tremendous success. As we break for the summer, please take time focus on what is important to you, your families, friends and community. Have a very blessed summer. During the year there were 4 Church Drives seeking prospective members. Council recruited a total of 7 new members this Columbian Year. This number is much lower than expected. Council has a number of members who are 1 st degree. These members are encouraged to continue their journey to full Knighthood by completing their 2 nd and 3 rd Degree's. There will be more opportunities to do this starting again in the fall. 3 Summer message from Fr. Jim (June 24, 2018 Bulletin) Jesus, here and now, all summer? My dear sisters and brothers in the Lord. As I write this, I look forward to a bright and beautiful 30-degree, sunshine filled June day, another sign of God s providential love and care for us. As we come to the close of the school year and the beginning of summer vacation time for most, I do wish you a very happy, healthy, rejuvenating and holy summer. I do ask this of you. Our weekday and weekend Mass schedule will continue as it has all year with no deviation or reduction in Liturgies offered. You will always be able to attend 0830 Mass, seven days a week at OLPH. Our parish office will be open from 0730 until 7:00 p.m. throughout the summer. In other words, my friends, OLPH is open for business. As such my friends we still need your presence and your sharing of Time and Talent within the many ministries that it takes to facilitate our weekly celebrations. If you are away from the community, have a wonderful vacation. If you are here, please plan to attend Mass sharing your gifts, in order to make our celebrations enlivening and fulfilling for all. Yes, some folks will be away on vacation. Perhaps this is an opportunity for you to step up and help. OLPH is a large and vibrant parish. It is my humble opinion that a wonderful parish like ours should never have a weekend Mass without music, or a shortage of Eucharistic Ministers. Please my friends, Jesus will be with us throughout the summer months, so, if we are in the community, let us follow His faithful example and do what we are able to make the kingdom of God present in the here and now in our parish community of Our Lady of Perpetual Help. Message from Fr. Raj in India Greetings of Peace in the Lord! All these days, I was traveling most of the times It is hot here in my province Tamil Nadu -India Last few days we are getting little rains here and there... 5 Year-end Barbeque and Awards night June 19 (Daryl Boyden) Brother Knights and families. The annual awards nights and BBQ was held June 19. Larry Hycha, Harvey Heck and myself co-chaired this event, which saw approximately 34 council members attend, along with spouse and or family members, for a total of about 65. Each of the 231 council members received a written invitation, and many also received the invite additionally, by . Page 5 Knightly News July 2018

6 There were many who assisted with the evening, some delegated last minute. Gerard Landry and Kevin Doucette assisted with set-up. Jean Boisvert and Jim Retallack were cooks on the barbeque. My thanks to them, and all those others that helped, especially with clean up. (Volunteers at the Barbeque: L-R, Jim Retallack, Jean Boisvert, Daryl Boyden, Gerard Landry) The evening began with Mass at 6:15 concelebrated by Fr. Jim Corrigan, Fr. Joe Glaab, and Fr. Slavko, who also joined us for dinner. Mass was offered for the special intentions of Council members and family in recognition of councils 50 th Anniversary. Charter members Peter Diduck (PGK) and John Konwicki and Elizabeth were present, as well as District Deputy David Asp (and Past Grand Knight), and Past Grand Knights Gus Rozycki, Sean Mullane, and Daryl Boyden. Many Past Grand Knights had submitted congratulatory anniversary messages to the Grand Knight, and these were printed and circulated at the dinner. All Edmonton and area councils were invited to bring candidates. In total there were 23 candidates in attendance from 8 Councils, including 13312, 7822, 7070, 15290, 12648, 4742 and Wally Muscoby from Calgary was the Conferring officer. The second degree was conducted by our own team, consisting of Gerry Woodlock, Daryl Boyden, and Steve Horvath, Larry Hycha, Michael Borynec, Sam Borynec. July 1, 2018 Canada Day Parade, Ft. Saskatchewan #6363 and #6083 Greetings Sir Knights, Just a brief but sincere thank- you note to all Sir Knights, Ladies, and Council # 6363 who participated at today's Canada Day Parade at Fort Saskatchewan. This was the first time that Our Lady of Guadalupe Assembly were able to obtain the "Santa Maria" float, and our gratitude goes to Sir Knight Gerald Poitras for arranging it. Once again, a BIG THANK YOU Gerald. The K of C float was decorated and made ready for the parade this morning by a dedicated team of our assembly. Some photos of the whole group followed of course. Parade started at approx. 12:10 and ended 1:20. Our thanks go to all the participating Sir Knights, Ladies, and Council # 6363 members who helped to make this event such a success. 10 Bro. James Thoughts from the Spiritual Traveller I have composed a series of thoughts about our responsibilities as husbands and fathers. Here are the next of the series: When we marry, we give up our rights to individual activities. All of our actions must support the oneness of our family. If my wife is not happy with my weekend hunting trips, they must disappear. If Wednesday night poker interferers with family activities, it must become history. This sounds like I m supposed to be my wife s servant, and in some ways that is true. I am my whole family s servant! As the spiritual authority and leader of my home, I am commanded to love and serve my family in an unselfish manner BY SOMEONE WHO IS MY MASTER. And if I fail to follow His orders, I will be asked to explain why I didn t when I meet Him at the end of this life. Some of us take the quotation in Paul s letter to the Ephesians literally. Paul said, the husband is to be the head of his wife. so I am the ultimate authority about what happens in my marriage. I am the official tie breaker. I will make all of the important decisions. God is with me on this. Sorry guys, the quotation lost something significant in the translation and loses even more when the last part is chopped off. Paul actually said, The husband is the head of the wife ASA CHRIST IS THE HEAD OF THE CHURCH. (Eph 5:23) Jesus led by serving. Are we truly serving our wives? Are we prepared to die for them? This does not have to be literally giving up my life, but could simply mean that I Page 10 Knightly News July 2018

11 give up something important to me because she wants me to do something else (for example the TV stays off Sunday afternoon and I ignore the sports programs available so that we can do something together that she enjoys). There is an additional problem with our understanding of that letter the translation from Greek loses its meaning because we generally translate literally. A semantic translation gains more understanding. Ancient Greeks noticed that when the head of the body was removed from the body, the body died. So, their perception was that the head of the body produced its life-force. That means the Paul was not saying anything about being boss. He was really saying that the husband is the life-force for his marriage. In other words, as the head of the family, our primary job must be the well-being of the entire family. Everything else, including our own desires, must take second place to the SECURITY AND INTEGRITY of your family.
