Lanier, PM Our new Marker Stone located on Burkhart Boulevard was finally dedicated on September 30th just prior to a Master Mason Degree. It seems the weather was really making it difficult to find a day to dedicate our Marker sign. I want to again thank all those who contributed to this project. 1 Our Senior Deacon and our Junior Warden attended the Wardens Retreat held Grand Lodge on September 29th. This event was held in Salem, Indiana at Salem Lodge #21. I was told the evening was very interesting. Our laws have finally been updated and approved Grand Lodge and we will soon have these available for any member of the lodge. I want to thank the laws chairman and all those who served in order to get this task accomplished. It took several meetings of this committee to reach their goal in finishing this process. "Thanks guys for a great job."
As the Thanksgiving holiday is fast approaching, we as a lodge have a lot for which to be thankful. Some of us traveled to New Orleans this year. Some brothers traveled to Kentucky and witnessed a Master Mason Degree conferred. Some ladies and widows of the lodge attended a day at Stream Cliff Farm. We also have a trip planned for December to Der Dinner Play House. However, two things we must remember are our men and women serving our country as well as those less fortunate who will not be able to enjoy a Thanksgiving meal. We as a lodge can do the following: pray for our military, donate food and money to Anchor House during this holiday season to help feed those less fortunate. Finally with a sad heart, I have received written notice from Brother Michael Dutton requesting to resign his position as our secretary because of health issues. I totally understand this and it is most important Mike takes care of himself. We held a special election for Secretary and installed Brother John S. Burkhart, we congratulate him on his election. I hope each and every one reading this enjoys a Thanksgiving filled with blessings with family and friends. Most importantly, we must remember from whom we receive ALL blessings! Fraternally, WM Jon D. Lanier, PM From the Secretary John S. Burkhart, Sec. I now have the first full month of the Secretary's job under my belt. I must say it has been a learning experience to say the least. I would like to thank Worshipful Master Jon Lanier and all the brothers for their patience while I have tried to figure out how to accomplish the various tasks. I also want to thank all the Brothers for electing me Secretary of the lodge at the stated meeting on the 20 th of October. We will be honoring three 50 year Past Masters and one 50 year Award of Gold recipient at our November 3, 2014 stated meeting. Bother Everett Merle Conrad of Bayless lodge was raised in 1964 and will receive his 50 Year Award of Gold. Brother Giles Spaulding served as master of Jackson Lodge in 1964, Brother Will Bentley served as master in 1960, and Brother Gene Pearson served as master of this lodge in Please plan to be with and these Brothers families on us on this momentous occasion. I check the voice mail and pick up the mail every day when I am in the office. You can also contact me on the lodge E mail as it forwards to my personal E mail. My cell phone number is Just a reminder, it will soon be that time of year again for dues notices to be sent out, this year s dues will remain the same $ Dues are due no later than December 31 st. Fraternally and Sincerely, John S. Burkhart, Sec From the West Jon P. Sage, SW Proficiency At the conclusion of each degree, we ask that a Brother demonstrates proficiency in the preceding degree before he may progress to the next. This practice hearkens back to the days of old, during the time of active and operative Lodges, which were very much involved in the building arts. Accordingly, proficiency, in a manner of speaking, takes the place of the Operative practice that once consisted of 7 years in an apprenticeship. After such a time, and if completed successfully, one 2
might be Passed as a Fellow of the Craft. In the days of building Cathedrals, Castles, or other great structures of stone; indeed, even if the structure were only a small residence, the importance of quality workmanship was paramount. If a workman were to somehow advance to the level of a Fellow of the Craft, who might at any given time, be the Master of that project, without possessing the necessary knowledge, then the project, the Lodge, and the community as a whole might be in danger, should the structure collapse. Indeed, proficiency in the knowledge of Masonry was, and is, of the utmost importance. Our Speculative Craft, in the modern day, is no different from the practices and cautions used our Operative forefathers. However, for the sake of expediency, laziness or perhaps both; the Freemasonic Institution has slowly whittled away the determining factors of proficiency into something reminiscent of a paint numbers booklet. Even those among us, from the youngest Entered Apprentice in the North East corner of the Lodge, to he who presides in the East, as Worshipful Master, are not tested in proficiency as they should be. Those jurisdictions that utilize ciphers for the memorization exercises, with some exceptions, have inadvertently overstated the importance of knowing only the lecture; as opposed to learning the knowledge and guideposts held within the lecture, which historically was given the instructive tongue, and received the attentive ear. The all too common one day classes, though necessary for some, have made it possible for many to become Initiated; Passed; and then Raised; without EVER having set foot inside their respective Temples. The Brethren are told that such practices are done in attempts to increase our membership, perhaps making the Work of Masonry less cumbersome, if not completely non existent. Yet, our numbers on the membership rolls still decrease. The retention rate of our Brethren is dismal and declining. How can this be, if we are rolling out the red carpet, as it were, welcoming new Candidates? Membership, retention, attendance the payment or non payment of dues. These are all nothing more than semantics, symptoms of an 3 underlying problem; a problem that few have the answer for, or even the proper questions to ask. Freemasonry s dwindling numbers have little to do with keeping the Brethren interested, or of having an entertaining Stated Meeting; even the old stand of good food (and plenty of it) has failed us! In today s Lodges, a good deal of Masonic education that is offered consists only of timed filler fluff material which is hardly informational, and definitely not enlightening. We labor under the notion that if Lodge is fun, Brethren will attend, and our membership will grow. And yet, even if it does, under the circumstances laid out prior, how will that new structure of Freemasonry stand? If it is built without proficiency, without the proper knowledge of the Arts, the structure will not stand and it cannot stand. The Freemasonic structure, built hastily and for the wrong reasons, is akin to a very tall stone wall, a wall built without cement. The cement is meant to bind the wall, and acts as the same symbolic cement which binds the Brethren. In short, the wall without a basis for binding, will fail. The basis for binding is knowledge, founded in proficiency; as such the answer lies not in how fast to build, but how to build properly. The answer lies in proficiency. Simple memorization of the catechism is not enough. A young child can memorize a nursery rhyme and still not comprehend what the nursery rhyme really means. The adult who reads the story to the child is responsible, in many ways, for deciding when a new story, a progression, is appropriate. Who among us has not witnessed, or been guilty of, finding that a particular children s book is not exciting enough for the child. If this is the case, it sometimes makes little difference if the book teaches a good lesson, or if the message provides possibility for growth in the child; if the child is not interested, we simply choose a different, more interesting, though possibly less informative book to read from. And thus, our dilemma is solved. The child is being read to, eventually learns to read, and we call that success. However, the child will, at some point, suffer as a result of not being made to tough it out and work through the difficult material.
Masonic Mentors face some of the same pitfalls and challenges with their charges, even though this is not to mean, in a literal sense, that Candidates and Brethren are children. However, in either case, the Mentor must insist that patience and a pathway towards learning remain THE central theme. In Masonic life, the trials and lessons of our Apprenticeships and learning processes prepare us for the challenges we will face as time passes, and as degrees are conferred. It is often times that the difficult material is the most valuable material. That the monitor and ritual were written down upwards of years ago means that we should learn and review those materials carefully, often times with a dictionary encompassing that time period. To learn the Work, we must first understand the Work. Thus, a solid knowledge of the language, the long words in many lectures that some Brethren call the $500 Words, are very often the most important ones to know! The Ritual serves as a guide, yes a blueprint, if you will. Our Monitors are the same thing. Neither one is infallible, and save the Ancient Landmarks (which are nearly the same throughout), many Jurisdictions have considerably different language. Yet, all point to a central location, which is the betterment and personal growth of each individual Mason. The volumes printed and circulated are but hints of someone else s thoughts, of their perceptions concerning our Craft. These are useful tools, but are only tools; they are guidelines and possible roadmaps for the attainment of Masonic Light. However, the attainment of ANY Light depends on that individual Brother finding it for himself. My Light will not be the same as your Light, or of anyone else s Light. All Light is relative to a Brother s particular situation, and to the progress he has made in the mystery of the Order. Each of these forms the parameters which guide and allow for that Brother s individual growth. Concerning those parameters, proficiency, in large part, helps to form the foundations! While it is true that Masonry is a progressive, and at times, a solitary journey, each block laid in our Masonic edifice must rest upon something. Indeed, even the foundation must rest upon and become 4 anchored in a solid surface. Proficiency serves as that mighty substrate. Proficiency, a Mastery of the basic working tools of the profession, provides a basis for all else and allows the builder to build. Without Proficiency, the builder is left with tools; is left with a rough blueprint; is left with materials with which to build; but is left without the knowledge of HOW to build. Without proficiency, the builder will construct recklessly. His structure will rise out of balance, sway upon its moorings, and will collapse against the winds of this life. It is for these reasons that a mentor is so very important to the Candidate and Brother. After a certain period, the individual Mason begins to build. As he builds, and if he builds with proficiency, the Brother s edifice will rise expertly and squarely. This individual structure will be combined with the multitude of structures built others, thus forming our Institution. If, through proficiency, such an Institution is built, it will stand whether the membership numbers 1,000,000 or 100. I have often reminded those whom I have mentored that Lodge is important, but you don t have to go to Lodge to be Mason. And that Masonry is right there, in YOUR heartthat s where it began, right? The question then very quickly becomes: do we desire a large and unstable Institution; or would we prefer to have a manageable sized, strong, and robust Institution? How important are Grand Master s awards for membership drives? Are we retaining members, and if so are those members proficient; are they indeed worthy and well qualified? Have we done our Level best to ensure that a Brother is good, strong, and proficient before recommending him for the next degree? The future of Masonry, and even of the Freemasonic Institution, does not rely upon numbers, but upon individual hearts of the Brethren. Fraternally, Jon P. Sage, SW
From the South Albert Eldridge, JW Brethren, we close another great month at Lodge, and move into November. It's hard to believe there only remains about 70 days in October was certainly a busy month. We raised Br. Antonio Terranova to the Sublime Degree of Master Mason. We also dedicated the new entrance marker stone along Burkhart Blvd. Kudos to Br. Andy Rumph for lending his expertise for this project. SD Baird and myself had the opportunity to visit Salem Lodge #20, to attend what was a first Warden's Workshop for this season, conducted the Deputy Grand Lecturers from Grand Lodge. It was a very informative event, and we had great fellowship as well. We were also given a tour of the lodge and learned about the deep history there. Brethren, with Veterans Day coming up, I thought it would be interesting to learn about a famous Freemason, who not only served in the military, but went on to become President... Ill Br. Gerald Ford, 33*. Ford received a commission as ensign in the U.S. Naval Reserve on April 13, On April 20, he reported for active duty to the V 5 instructor school at Annapolis, MD. After one month of training, he went to Navy Preflight School in Chapel Hill, NC, where he taught navigation skills, ordnance, gunnery, first aid and military drill. During the one year he was at the Preflight School, he was promoted to Lieutenant Junior Grade on June 2, 1942, and to Lieutenant in March Applying for sea duty, Ford was sent in May 1943 to the precommissioning detachment for the new aircraft carrier USS Monterey (CVL 26), from 5 the ship's commissioning until the end of December 1944, Ford served as the assistant navigator, Athletic Officer, and anti aircraft battery officer. While he was on board, the carrier participated in many actions in the Pacific Theater with the Third and Fifth Fleets. In 1943, the carrier helped secure Makin Island in the Gilberts. The carrier also conducted strikes in the Marianas, Wake Islands, and was in the Battle of the Philippine Sea. During a typhoon that ravaged much of the Third Fleet, his ship rolled a full 25⁰ and he came close to sliding overboard, as others aboard the ship and upon other vessels had. After returning to stateside service in early 1945, he had other assignments including being the Staff Physical and Military Training Officer at Naval Air Station in IL. On October 3, 1945, he was promoted to Lieutenant Commander. In January 1946, he was sent to the Separation Center, Great Lakes to be processed out. He was released from active duty under honorable conditions on February 23, For his naval service, Gerald Ford earned the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal with 9 engagement stars for operations in the Gilbert Islands, Bismarck Archipelago, Marshall Islands, Asiatic and Pacific carrier raids, Hollandia, Marianas, Western Carolines, Western New Guinea, and the Leyte Operation. He also received the Philippine Liberation Medal with 2 bronze stars for Leyte and Mindoro, as well as the American Campaign and World War II Victory Medals. In 1992 the U.S. Navy Memorial Foundation awarded Ford its Lone Sailor Award for his naval service and his subsequent government service. Gerald R. Ford was initiated into Freemasonry on September 30, 1949.[33] He later said in 1975, "When I took my obligation as a Master Mason, with my
three younger brothers I recalled the value my own father attached to that order. But I had no idea that I would ever be added to the company of the Father of our Country and 12 other members of the order who also served as Presidents of the United States. Brother Ford was made a Sovereign Grand Inspector General, 33, and Honorary Member, Supreme Council A.A.S.R. Northern Jurisdiction at the Academy of Music in Philadelphia, on September 26, 1962, for which he served as Exemplar for his Class. Brother and President Ford was elected an Active Member of the International Supreme Council, Order of DeMolay and its Honorary Grand Master, at its Annual Session held at Orlando, Florida, April 6 9, Br. 8 OES News Jan Brock, Worthy Matron Terry Byrns, Worthy Patron Our October stated meeting was held Thursday, October 2, 2014, just three days after our inspection with Salem and Hayden on Monday, September 29. We want to congratulate Sister Audrey Spencer and Sister Jan Wilde on 50 years of membership in Eastern Star. A ceremony was conducted at the Inspection Worthy Grand Matron Betty Swisher where both received their pins and were recognized. Fifty years of membership is an honor few can claim. We are delighted they are both part of our Chapter. We are also delighted that Sister Audrey was willing to accept a new position in the Chapter and at the October meeting she was installed as our Marshal. I thank her for her willingness to serve; she said she would rather be active than sit on the sidelines. We want to congratulate and welcome our new members. At the Inspection on September 29, we initiated Sisters Kelly Spencer and Liz Trueblood and Brother Mike Trueblood. We look forward to working with them over the years. Our star points this year are Mollie Brown, Wanda Gray, Ollie Knott, Norma Burrell, and Kay Schwade. Each of these women represents a heroine of our organization. Certainly the star points are the focus of Eastern Star. I want to thank them for their service to our chapter. The Inspection went well. Seymour Chapter was responsible for the initiatory work. We were lucky that the Grand Star Points were able to do that part of the work during initiation. But I do want to thank each of our members for their preparation; we did an exceptional job. We ended our October meeting with memorials for two of our members who transferred from the Brownstown Chapter. We are certainly sorry that we did not have the opportunity to work with these members but we know God will use them well. We look forward to continuing in serving Masons at their stated meetings and degree work. I believe all those who work in the kitchen truly enjoy the camaraderie. We continue to look for new members to our Order. If any Mason is interested or has a family member that is interested in joining Eastern Star, please contact me. I will be glad to meet to talk about the work we do. We thank all Masons and Star members for their support and enthusiasm.
