1 Dr. E. J. Ward, Pastor Newsletter Date Missionary Baptist Church 5800 San Pablo Avenue, Oakland, CA Newsletter, Volume 37 August 2014 Pastor s Page. 2 Church Events 3 Calling All Young Adults 3 Women's Annual Day..4 Living by "SON" Light.4 Welcome to Dr. Moore 5 City Wide Revival..5 This quote quote, from Nehemiah 4:6, is one of the most encouraging and important single-minded minded camaraderie of the Spotlight on Health 6 phrases in the scriptures. It describes the single people of Jerusalem in rebuilding the wall. Although we know that we are Know your Neighbors..7 dependent on God to accomplish anything of significance, we also know that we must work together to fulfill the task that God has called us to. From the Editor...7 Star Bethel is the body of Christ and that means that we represent Him here on Birthday Wishes...7 earth. The church is God's spiritual family family, made up of many different people but our common tie is we have all experienced the love and the grace of God through faith in Jesus Christ. It is through this faith that we have continued to 9:00 am Sunday School persevere persevere. That same faith will enable us to move forward more efficiently and 11:00 am effectively than ever before to continue building up the Body of Christ and Sunday Morning Worship experiencing His transforming power. Under the leadership of Pastor Ward the Services work continues. Please submit info for newsletter to: Pastor Earl Ward -or-veronicacorprew@aol.com Please join with us in praying for the continued leading of the Holy Spirit as we move forward for the glory of God! To God Be the Glory!! Veronica Corprew, B.S., Editor LOOK NO MORE! If you are looking for a church with a strong desire to love God and serve others,

2 2 There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. 1 Corinthians 12:5 (NIV) What is your job title? I remember how people used to make jokes about how companies upgraded the titles of jobs to make them sound more important. A trash collector suddenly became a sanitation engineer. The great apostle Paul begins his letter to the Romans by stating his job title. Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle and set apart for the gospel of God. For every human being, the most important role in life, is a servant of Jesus Christ. God created us to be His people. Every other role we take on in life is shaped by how we respond to this desire of God. If we are parents, spouses, bosses or community leaders, the most important role we can accept is servant of Jesus Christ. Paul accepted the calling of God to be an apostle. Not everyone is called to be an apostle. But everyone is called to serve Christ in a role within His kingdom and His church. Some are preachers; some are teachers; some are musicians. There are many different roles in God s work. Each of us is called to find some ministry within the church by which we serve Christ. We accept our calling as we recognize, just as Paul did, that we are set apart by God for His message of Good News, the Gospel. God defines our role and equips us for that role in the greater mission of God. We are a part of His plan to call every person to be His servant and His child. The Bible has a great deal to say about servanthood because the central theme of the Bible is the Servant of all Jesus Christ. For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many Mark 10:45. When we give Jesus Christ His rightful place as Lord of our lives, His lordship will be expressed in the way we serve others. Our love for God is expressed in our love for others. For what we preach is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, with ourselves as your servants for Jesus sake 2 Corinthians 4:5. Many Christians want to receive the gift of being God s child, but ignore the call to be His servant. Paul knew, and the Spirit inspired him to remind us, that we cannot be one without the other. Whether you have been around church your entire life or this is your initial experience, Star Bethel has something for you; from a spiritual worship experience, teaching or fellowship, we welcome you. Please remember, the first time you come to Star Bethel you are welcomed as a visitor. The next time you come, you are just coming home. WÜA XA ]A jtüw

3 3 Across the years, the women omen of Star Bethel have come together to make this day an uplifting time of Worship, Praise, and Celebration. We are most grateful to Sis. Beadie Nelson for her leadership as Chair of the Women s Annual Day Program, each participant on the program program, the Women s Day Chorus, Chorus to those who ho served on the Food Committee, the women who rightly divided the Word of God and everyone who supported our program. Our program was held on Sunday, July 27, :00 p.m. Theme: A Church in True Worship" Morning Speaker Lady Patricia Farr New Bethel Tabernacle Dr. Lloyd Farr, Pastor Afternoon Speaker Sis. Evette Carpenter Vision Training Center Rev. Jaynes Parker, Pastor Some of our days seem very dark, when sickness, ickness, the death of a loved one, the loss of a job or another struggle overshadows life. In our despair, it can be difficult to sense God s presence. We think, if God were here here, surely he d be shining his light on our dark circumstances. When life is bright and joyous, it s easy to sense God; the sun becomes a natural metaphor for God s Son, Jesus, the Light of the world. But even on cloudy days, the sun still shines, its presence not bound by our limited vision. And in the darkest night, the sun remains; remai the warmth it gave before dusk lingers, enough to preserve us into the dawning of a new day. Sometimes we even catch its reflection in the moon. Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning (Psalm 30:5b). Trust in God; even in life s darkest times, the SON st still ill shines!

6 6 Ease the Morning Stiffness of Rheumatoid Arthritis for a Brighter Day If morning stiffness from rheumatoid arthritis slows down your morning routine, try these expert tips to help you ease into your day more smoothly. Starting your day can be slow going if you're troubled by morning stiffness from rheumatoid arthritis (RA). But you can take steps some before you even get out of bed to wake up your joints and face the day. One of the causes of the morning stiffness of rheumatoid arthritis is prolonged joint inactivity, something that's unavoidable while you're asleep, says John M. Davis III, MD, a rheumatologist and an assistant professor of medicine at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. Your body s natural circadian rhythms, which can cause a nighttime surge of inflammatory cells that can trigger early morning joint inflammation, are also to blame. Helpful Hints for Your Morning Routine Dr. Davis says some people with rheumatoid arthritis describe morning stiffness as a feeling of a freezing or locking up of the joints. Stiffness makes performing the simplest of morning tasks more difficult and often dictates the morning routine," he says. Some people put a pot of coffee on, take their morning dose of medication, and then take a long hot shower, which often helps to lessen the stiffness. Tips to Minimize Morning Stiffness Use these tips to create your own personalized routine for managing the morning stiffness of rheumatoid arthritis: Take your meds right after you wake. If you take medication to manage rheumatoid arthritis symptoms, take the morning dose as soon as possible after waking up, Davis says. Keep your medication and some water on your nightstand so you don t even have to get out of bed first. Set the alarm early. Adjust thermostat to kick up the heat about 30 minutes before getting going in the morning. That half-hour allows time for joints to warm up before getting moving. Warm up your mornings. In addition to medications, have other essentials within arm's reach on nightstand: a heating pad, warm socks, mittens, and a book to read while loosening up joints in bed. Before taking your morning shower, use heating pad in bed and put on socks to warm up your feet before getting out of bed. Exercise. Start your morning by performing some gentle range-of-motion exercises to stretch and loosen your hands, wrists, feet, and any joints especially bothered by morning stiffness. Get adaptive. To ease the strain on painful hands, try using adaptive devices like wide-gripped utensils to help you prepare and eat breakfast. Ease into activity. Don t push yourself at the start of your day. Pacing activities or breaking up tasks in the morning can help with getting things done in a more tolerable way. Working with your doctor is your most important strategy he or she can help you find the appropriate medications to get rheumatoid arthritis under control and help lessen morning stiffness.
