3 Charles R. Hale Collection of Connecticut Cemetery Inscriptions In order to combat the devastating effects of the Great Depression, U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt, in 1935, created the Work Progress Administration (W.P.A.). His order was made law by Congress with the passage of the Emergency Relief Appropriations Act of All over America, projects of all kinds employed, at the height of the program, more than three million Americans. One of these projects was locating all the cemeteries in the State of Connecticut and retrieving the vital information contained on the headstones. Under the direction of Charles R. Hale, W.P.A. workers scoured the record books, woods and fields of Connecticut searching for cemeteries big and small. As a result, 2,269 cemeteries, 20 in Thompson, Connecticut were found and the headstones inscriptions documented. The project began in 1932 and was completed in The following list of Thompson cemeteries is just a small piece of Hale s work. ii

8 THOMPSON S OLDEST GRAVES The first marked graves of Thompson settlers are found in the West Thompson Cemetery, located at the corner of CT Route 193 and CT Route 12. The West Thompson Cemetery dates back to 1726 and has some of the best preserved headstones in the country. While it contains the oldest marked graves of European settlers, or their descendants in our town, they are certainly not our first. In 1636, using paths long-ago established by Native Americans, Puritan leader, Thomas Hooker and a band of 100 followers left the Boston Bay Colony for greater freedom in the Connecticut River Valley. The path they used, now called the Old Connecticut Path, eventually became a major route for the Colonial postal system. The Old Connecticut Path entered Connecticut at the Massachusetts's border, crossed the western corner of Thompson, and proceeded to Woodstock. While the first known settlers' graves are located in the West Thompson Cemetery, there were certainly other pioneers buried in Thompson along the Old Connecticut Path long before The first known grave at West Thompson Cemetery was Marey Dwight, who died at the tender age of three years and three months on April 23, 1726, nearly 50 years before the start of the Revolutionary War. The next oldest grave belongs to 36-year-old Samuel Davis, who died on August 13, The following list represents the 10 oldest marked graves in Thompson. 1. Clough, Hannah, wife of Jonathan, died Mar. 17, 1728, age 37 yrs 2. Clough, Obadiah, died Mar. 4, 1728, age 16 yrs 3. D.J. 1728, same as on stone 4. Davis, Dorcas, died 1728, age 2 yrs 5 mos 5. Davis, Samuel, died Aug. 13, 1727, age 36 yrs 6. Dresser, Richard, died July 31, Dwight, Marey, died April 23, 1726, age 3 yrs 3 mos 8. Jewet, Dorcas, died Mar. 5, 1728, age 5 yrs 9. Johnson, Lydia, died Mar. 31, 1728, age 11 yrs 10. Dwight, Ella H., died Feb. 20, 1729, age 4 mos 6 days It is important to note that Native Americans inhabited the Thompson area hundreds of years before the arrival of white settlers. The area is filled with countless Indian graves and burial grounds. Some are marked, most are not. These hallowed grounds should be given the same attention, respect and care as the white man s graves. 1
