1 THE AMERICAN GOLFER 47 EASTERN PENNSYLVANIA NOTES By "HAZARD" IT ALL DEPENDS I don't mind Od Stiffy's winning, If he'd ony stop his grinning, And stuttering with his head up, And cacking ike a hen. When he's caught me with umbago He's as happy as a Dago; "Trimmed the Od Man we today," He brags and aughs again. And then he rubs it in on me, Hands round the score for the boys to see, Tes how he got me pressing Ti at ast he made me crack. Now, what is any tougher Than to isten to this duffer, When you know your ony troube Is umbago down your back? I can't see the sense in crowing When you happen to be going Better than you are entited With your dinky itte game. Why not be unassuming, Like the daisies round you booming, When we you know umbago Has your riva going ame? What did I do today to Stiffy? Why I icked him in a jiffy, And you shoud have heard him beefing 'Bout his headache and his gout. The way I had him going He never had a showing; I hate to brag about it, But read this score and shout! The Duffer. THE MOST NOTABLE meeting on the Phiadephia schedue was reserved amost unti the ast ca of them a; the Lesey Cup matches between teams representing the Metropoitan, the Massachusetts, and the Pennsyvania Associations. To be sure, this year's event was nove because it was arranged for the team, which usuay stood out on the first day, to meet an added team composed of veteran payers, who had represented their respective districts in this same contest, in previous years. And it cannot be said that this Veteran Team did bady, for they made even a better showing, when the resuts were posted on the board, than did the Pennsyvanians in their match against the same team;the Champion Metropoitans. The matches were payed over the course of the Merion Cricket Cub, and, on the first day, the Pennsyvania Team met the New Enganders, whie the Veterans were paying the team from the Metropoitan. After the foursomes in the morning, when the Massachusetts men won four of the nine matches, the prospects for a Pennsyvania victory seemed exceedingy remote, but the Pennsyvanians amost swept the boards in the afternoon, taking eight of the ten matches. Mr. W. C. Fownes, Jr., had his first chance since the Nationa Championship of a year ago to get revenge over Mr. Francis Ouimet, but it took nineteen hoes for him to secure the match. The summary of the first day's pay foows: PENNSYLVANIA W. C. Fownes, Jr., and G. A. Ormiston E. M. Byers and C. B. Buxton Davidson Herron and J. H. Oiver R. S. Worthington and J. N. Stearns, 3d G. A. IT WAS ANTICIPATED that the Pennsyvania Team, which appeared to be unusuay strong, woud give a far better accounting than they did, but they succeeded in getting but one match in the foursomes, and two in the singes. It cannot be said that the scoring in any of the matches was of very high order, but the contest between Mr. Fownes and Mr. Travers was interesting, and this match easiy carried the gaery. Going to the sixteenth, the famous quarry hoe, Mr. Fownes fe short with his second into the yawning hazard in front of the green, whie Mr. Travers, paying too strongy, found the rough beyond. After paying out, Mr. Fownes aid his fourth quite near the cup, and, after Mr. Travers had rimmed for a win, his ba came to rest in a compete stymie for the Pennsyvanian to negotiate. Partridge, New York, defeated Crookston, Pennsyvania, up. PREVIOUS TO the Lesey Matches, the Merion Cub gave an invitation tournament, and it was hoped that most of the payers, who were to compete in the Lesey Matches, woud participate. However, ony a few of them found that they coud spare so much time, a week's hard gof woud demand, and for the most part the fied was a oca one. There was no quaification round, and the payers began their matches immediatey. One
4 5 THE AMERICAN GOLFER very notabe entrant, Mr. Jerome D. Travers, was present, ready to pay, when an urgent ca from New York caused his return. The fina narrowed to Mr. Cameron B. Buxton, of Huntingdon Vaey, and Mr. Sidney E. Sharwood, of Merion. The scoring was not good, but Mr. Buxton was enough better to win. IT IS THE CUSTOM, each year, for Springhaven and Wimington to meet in an annua team match. In the contest at Media, the home team were victorious by a wide margin, as these resuts show. VANDERBECK was the guest of honor at a argey attended dinner and dance, given by Mr. Eis H. Gimbe, President of the Phimont Country Cub. Many of Phiadephia's best known payers honored the ady champion with their presence, and mixed foursomes were payed during the afternoon. Mr. Eis Ames Baard presided at the dinner. MR. A. W. TILLINGHAST, who in recent years has forsaken the paying of the game for gof instruction work, is in San Antonio, Texas at this writing. It is ikey that his absence from Phiadephia wi be of a month's duration, for, besides buiding the Municipa Gof Course for the City of San Antonio, he is to pan an eighteen hoes course for the United States Army officers at Fort Sam Houston, and to prepare pans for the remodeing of the course of the Country Cub. WHEN THE Shawnee Country Cub gave their annua tournament eary in the summer, Mr. Chares C. Worthington and Dr. Forian Krug tied for the Consoation Cup. On the first attempt to pay off for the prize, another tie resuted, but recenty Mr. Worthington succeeded in gaining possession of it by defeating the Doctor by a wide margin of seven up and five to pay. THE SHAWNEE COUNTRY CLUB, after their reguar annua schedue had been competed as usua, gave a ate fa tournament this year, and two sixteens were quaified. Mr. James C. Parrish, Jr., of the Nationa Gof Links of America, not ony won the quaification round, with a card of 82, but succeeded in winning the chief trophy as we. In the fina, he defeated Mr. Reginad Worthington by three up and two to pay. To add interest to the meeting, the committee arranged for the matches to be payed at handicaps, and, in the fina, the Shawnee man had to aow Mr. Parrish one stroke. In the second sixteen, Mr. R. P. Schenck, of Batusro, handicapped at 25, defeated Mr. J. Frankin Meehan, of North His, by five up and three to pay. Mr. Meehan was forced to concede his opponent seven strokes, and, as Mr. Schenck had used but 83
5 THE AMERICAN GOLFER 5 strokes for seventeen hoes, the task was much too great. HEAD AND SHOULDERS above a other women gofers at the cose of the season, stands Mrs. Carence H. Vanderbeck. To demonstrate that her winning of the Nationa Tite was no fuke, the Champion immediatey entered the annua tournament for the Bertheyn Cup, the gift of Mrs. Caeb F. Fox. In the quaification round her card was four strokes better than that returned by Miss Eeanor Chander, and five strokes better than that of Mrs. Barow. In the fina, Mrs. Vanderbeck and Mrs. Barow met, as they have on many occasions during the past few years. Unti this season, the Merion ady has enjoyed a distinct advantage over her opponent from St. Martins. However, eary in the summer, the usua resut was reversed, and again in this fina for the Bertheyn Cup Mrs. Vanderbeck, seemingy having gained much confidence by her victory for nationa honors, payed with great steadiness throughout, and won on the home green. Her card of 86, over the difficut course of Huntingdon Vaey, ceary demonstrates the quaity of her pay. ON OCTOBER 6TH, the annua competition for the Mary Thayer Farnum Cup was payed over the course of the Phiadephia Country Cub at Baa. It was an unfortunate day for adies' gof, for the rain fe during the morning, but finay was gaant enough to make off. Mrs. Carence H. Vanderbeck ed the fied after the first round, with the most consistent card of 87: Out In On the second day her scoring was quite as consistent, as this card shows: MR. HARRY C. BUBB, President of the Wiiamsport (Pa.) Country Cub. Out In Her nearest riva was Mrs. Barow, who returned two cards of 9 and 95. Thus, in addition to winning the Farnum Memoria Cup by the margin of an even dozen strokes, the Nationa Champion succeeded in gaining the Siver Cross, which Mrs. Barow has monopoized with reguarity. MR. FORBES A. SMITH is the cub champion of the Berkshire Country Cub. He beat Mr. T. I. Snyder in the 36 hoes fina, by 7 up and 6 to pay. MISS MARGARET MOSS won the women's cub championship of the Berkshire Country Cub, beating Mrs. G. Howard Bright in the 36 hoes fina by the narrow margin of one hoe. Miss Moss has won the championship four times, whie Mrs. Bright has hed the tite for eight years. Mrs. Wm. Seifert hed the championship for one year as aso did Mrs. John A. Archer.
