Assembly Mtg. 7:30 PM Bingo Every Wednesday at 7 PM Changes and additions at: Grand Knight s Message As we enter the New Year of 2018, I want to wish bountiful blessings to each of you, and each of your family members, as this time of renewal progresses. Along with that goes my profound thanks for all the support and assistance during this difficult transition period. During this New Year please keep in mind, and in your prayers, the many Knights, including Grand Knight Tom, who have passed away this past year. Special thanks to our Color Guard who attend the funerals of our Brothers, and to Mike Planko for his work in making arrangements for the Knights representation. December was an active month, the highlight of which was the superbly presented K of C Party and dinner. Plaudits to our most gracious host, Columbian President Ken Davis for all his efforts, setting up and decorating for this wonderful event. Also for allowing us free reign on the menu which was well received. Frank and I also extend our deepfelt thanks to Karen Powers, Ann Argentine, Dan and Sue Matrazzo and Cathy Bunch for their help preparing this meal. Also a special thank you to Tom and Liz Zwickle who chose to work that night in the kitchen, as did Dan Matrazzo, rather than attend the party. All these wonderful people make our job much easier. Other events included a frantic hospital breakfast that served over 700 meals. The large participation from our Brother Knights, some of their wives and Catholic Daughters made this huge event successful. We also had a lightly attended, but thoroughly enjoyed, K of C Children s Christmas Party with an appearance from Santa and decorations by the Catholic Daughters. Our $10,000 Raffle finally turned a total profit of $4,000, due largely to the marketing skills of Manny B, Dave T, Ken D, Frank T, Charles M, Ralph F, and many others. Thank you to Bill and Ann Argentine for taking over one of Frank s and my store pick-ups. They have graciously taken over the Thursday morning pick up at Price Chopper so Frank and I can start cooking earlier for the Homeless Vets and Code Blue. The groceries we collect Thursday Saturday are appreciated by many local organizations. Thank you also to John, and Elwin for their many years of service to our Bingo Program. I wish as much success to their successors Dennis T, and Pat M as John and Elwin enjoy their well deserved retirement, although I know they will still be making many Wednesday appearances. Again I m very appreciative of all the people who have helped me in my new position and in the kitchen. I also look forward to working with our newer members as we continue in our charitable work. Thank you Jeff Koppi for your hard work in creating our monthly newsletters. And to Dr. Grimm for your help and gentle push to keep me on track to get my thoughts in the newsletters. 2 Columbian Report I would like to thank all of the volunteers that helped out during the Saratoga hospital party. We served over 700 adults and kids. I look forward to working with all of the Brothers in I feel very confident that the Columbian will have another good year. Thank you for all of your support. Ken Davis Columbian President Pro Life Corner (continued from November newsletter) 4. Planned Parenthood promotes risky RU- 486 abortions that have killed young women. PPFA strongly supports the dangerous abortion drug RU- 486, promoted its expedited approval by the FDA, and volunteered to conduct early U.S. trials. In early trials, young Californians Holly Patterson and Vivian Tran died from infections after RU-486 abortions at Planned Parenthood clinics. In April 2011, the FDA reported 2,207 adverse events up to that time, including 14 deaths, 339 cases of blood loss requiring transfusions, and (in addition to deaths) 612 hospitalizations. Actual figures are likely higher, as the FDA doesn't mandate reporting by providers. PPFA clinics flouted FDA protocols by, among other things, using RU-486 off-label for abortions up to 63 days after a woman's last menstrual period (two weeks later than the FDA found safe). When Ohio passed a law requiring clinics to follow FDA guidelines, Planned Parenthood sued to tie up the law in court; public data later showed 42 botched RU- 486 abortions in Ohio, including 35 women who had to return for a surgical abortion. Despite these deaths and other adverse events, in 2016 the Obama administration changed the FDA protocol to match what PPFA had been doing without authorization. 3 Chaplain s Report This month we will discuss the last of the seven sacraments, Matrimony. The Church teaches that Matrimony is the marriage between a man and a woman in the sight of God. Bishop Fulton J. Sheen said that it takes three to get married, husband, wife and God who must be present. The rings are a symbol of the covenant of marriage and its unending unity. A ring has no beginning and no ending. Ergo the marriage is forever. Matrimony is a sacrament of Christian dignity, love of each other, forgiveness, oneness and prayer. " Spouses should be totally faithful to each other, a fidelity that is grounded in a special kind of love - called conjugal charity." St. Augustine. Marriage is not a contract but a covenant which means equality. There are two purposes of the Sacrament of Matrimony: 1. To love each totally and 2. To procreate - have children and be responsible for their upbringing. The reception after the ceremony is not the real celebration of the sacrament. The wedding ceremony itself is the celebration. Being faithful to the Sacrament makes marriage a vocation in the Church. On January 19 the annual National March for Life will take place in Washington DC. Hundreds of thousands of pro- lifers will be there to let the Supreme Court know that millions of Americans abhor abortion as intrinsically evil. We Knights are asked to pray for the marchers and that the gathering will have a positive effect on the Supreme Court.
