4 תפילת הדרך Tefilat HaDerech Tefilat HaDerech תפילת הדרך) - Traveler's Prayer ) is a prayer for a safe journey recited by Jews, when they travel, by air, sea, and even on car trips. It is recited at the onset of every journey, you can often find it on Hamsas which sometimes contain the Sh'ma or Birkat HaBayit prayer instead. May it be Your will, Lord, our God and the God of our ancestors, that You lead us toward peace, guide our footsteps toward peace, and make us reach our desired destination for life, gladness, and peace. May You rescue us from the hand of every foe and ambush, from robbers and wild beasts on the trip, and from all manner of punishments that assemble to come to earth. May You send blessing in our handiwork, and grant us grace, kindness, and mercy in Your eyes and in the eyes of all who see us. 5 שהחיינו Shehecheyanu The Shehecheyanu blessing is recited when tasting a fruit for the first time in the season, when moving into a new home, at the beginning of Jewish holidays and on many other joyous occasions. As a joyous occasion, on one's arrival in the land of israel or seeing Jerusalem for the first time. The blessing is recorded in the jewish law book of the Talmud, indicating that it has been recited for over 2000 years. Blessed are You, Lord King of the world, Who has kept us in life, sustained us, and brought us to this moment. The sages teaches us that the first thing we should do upon waking up is be grateful for being alive. I offer thanks before you, living and eternal King, for You have mercifully restored my soul within me; Your faithfulness is great.. 6 שבת Shabbat Shabbat ב ת) ש - "rest" or "cessation") is the day of rest in Judaism and the seventh day of the week, on which we remember the Biblical creation of the heavens and the earth in six days and that God rested on the 7th day. The concept of the day is to take a break and rest for the body and soul, and is one of the gifts that Judaism gave to the world According to Halakha (Jewish religious law), Shabbat is observed from a few minutes before sunset on Friday evening until the appearance of three stars in the sky on Saturday night. Shabbat is ushered in by lighting candles and reciting a blessing. Traditionally, three festive meals are eaten: in the evening, in the early afternoon, and late in the afternoon. The evening meal typically begins with a blessing called Kiddush and another blessing called Hamotzi recited over two loaves of challah. Shabbat is closed the following evening with a Havdalah blessing. Shabbat is a festive day when Jews exercise their freedom from the regular labors of everyday life. It offers an opportunity to contemplate the spiritual aspects of life and to spend time with family. 6

7 הדלקת נרות שבת Candle lighting According to Rabbinic literature, God commands Jews to observe (refrain from forbidden activities) and remember (with words, thoughts, and actions) Shabbat. These two actions are symbolized by the customary two Shabbat candles. One candle is for Shamor (observe) and one is for Zachor (Remember). The candles are lit on Friday evening before sunset to usher in the Shabbat. Candlelighting is traditionally done by the woman of the household, but according to the Halacha (Jewish Law) men can light candles too. After lighting, the candles the woman moves her hands over the candles and towards her face, she then covers her eyes and recites the blessing. Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the universe who has sanctified us with His com- mandments, and commanded us to kindle the light of the Shabbat. 8 לכו נרננה Lechu neranena The group of Psalms is introduced by the words A Psalm, a song, for the Sabbath day, revolves around the idea of God s sovereignty and might, and concludes with a call to all nation to praise and worship God with joy. The special message conveyed in these psalms secured for them a place of honor in the prayer book. The idea of God s sovereignty resonates emphatically with Shabbat since only a mighty ruler can allow himself to cease completely of all activity, as indeed it is written in the Ten Commandments. The psalm is usually chanted by the whole congregation with one of the various tropes of Psalms and serves as a wonderful introduction to the Shabbat prayers. Come, let us sing joyously to the Lord, raise a shout for our Rock and deliverer; Let us come into His presence with praise; let us raise a shout for Him in song! For the Lord is a great God, the great King of all divine beings In his hand are the depths of the earth, the peaks of the mountains are His His is the sea, He made it; and the land, which His hands fashioned Come, let us bow down and kneel, bend the knee before the Lord our maker, For He is our God, and we are the people He tend, the flock in His care. 9 אנא בכוח Ana Bekoach The "Ana Bekoach is a Kabbalistic poem of unknown authorship, although traditionally it is attributed to a sage of the second century, Rabbi Nehunia ben HaKana. It pleads for Israel's redemption from exile. Its seven lines of six words each - their first letters spelling out a secret divine name - have served as the basis of much mystical speculation. The Ana Bekoach prayer is recited every morning during the Shacharit service and also on Friday evening during the Kabbalat Shabbbat Service just prior to the singing of Lecha Dodi. We beg thee with the strength and greatness of thy right arm-untangle our knotted fate. Accept your people's song, elevate and purify us (x2) Please, heroic one, those who pursue your uniquenessguard them as the pupil of an eye. Bless them, purify them, pity them, may your righteousness always reward them. Powerful and Holy One, in goodness lead your flock. 10 לכה דודי Lekha Dodi Lekha Dodi is a Hebrew kabalistic poem that was composed by Rabi Shlomo Halevi Alkabetz, one of the leading members of the 16th century kabbalistic community in Tzfat. The poem became part of the Kabbalat Shabbat ("welcoming of Sabbath"). Lekhah Dodi means "come my beloved," and is a request of a mysterious "beloved" that could mean either God or one's friend(s) to join together in welcoming Shabbat that is referred to as the "Bride": "Likrat Kallah" ("to greet the [Shabbat] bride"). During the singing of the last verse, the entire congregation rises and turns to the west towards the setting sun or towards the Door of the synagogue, to greet "Queen Shabbat" as she arrives and then turn back and face the ark when she has already arrived. Interesting to point out that Rabi Elkabatz wrote the poem in a way in which the.(שלמה הלוי) first letter of each of the verses creates his name: Shlomo Halevi Come, my Beloved, to meet the bride; let us welcome the presence of the Sabbath. "Obse rve" and "Remember the Sabbath day," the only God caused us to hear in a single utterance : the Lord is One, and his name is One to his renown and his glory and his praise. Come, etc. Come, let us go to meet the Sabbath, for it is a well-spri ng of blessing; from the beginning, from of old it was ordained, last in productio n, first in thought. Come, etc. O sanctuary of our King, O regal city, arise, go forth from thy overthrow ; long enough hast thou dwelt in the valley of weeping; verily He will have compassio n upon thee. 12 Mizmor Shir L'yom HaShabbat מזמור שיר ליום שבת Psalm 92, known as Mizmor Shir L'yom HaShabbat, is a psalm ostensibly dedicated to the Shabbat day. Though it is permissible to recite it any day, it is generally reserved for Shabbat and is also recited during the morning services on festivals. A Psalm, a Song. For the sabbath day. It is a good thing to give thanks unto the LORD, and to sing praises unto Thy name, O Most High; To declare Thy lovingkin dness in the morning, and Thy faithfuln ess in the night seasons, With an instrumen t of ten strings, and with the psaltery; with a solemn sound upon the harp. For Thou, LORD, hast made me glad through Thy work; I will exult in the works of Thy hands. How great are Thy works, O LORD! Thy thoughts are very deep. 14 Barechu ברכו Barechu - ברכו) Bless ) is a part of the Jewish prayer service, functioning as a call to prayer. It is recited before the blessings over the Sh ma at Shacharit (the morning prayer, the first of three) and Maariv (the evening/night prayer, the last of three), and during Reading of the Torah. Some congregations also recite it toward the end of both Shacharit and Maariv. It consists of the Chazzan ( songul prayer leader ) calling out, "Bless the Lord, the Blessed One!", and the congregation responding "Blessed is the Lord, the Blessed One forever and ever." The Chazzan then repeats the congregation's response, so as not to seem to be excluding himself. 16 אדון עולם Adon Olam Adon Olam ד ון ע ול ם) - א "Eternal Lord" or "Sovereign of the Universe") is a strictly metrical hymn in the Jewish liturgy written in lines of eight syllables; more precisely, each line is composed of two segments of one yated and 2 tenu'ot, which indeed makes 8 syllables. It has been a regular part of the daily and Shabbat liturgy since the 15th century. It was added to the Sidur Tefila (the praing book) in the 15th century. The songs speak about the different values/ powers of God. The Lord of the Universe who reigned before anything was created. When all was made by his will He was acknowledged as King.
