1 Volume 6, Issue 2 March 2008 Manalapan News New Landscaping at J. Turner Moore Manalapan Library... The Town of Manalapan has just completed a renovation of the J. Turner Moore Library s landscaping. The plan was designed by Chris Wayne and Associates and reviewed by the Landscape Committee consisting of Daryl Cheifetz and Kathryn Diamond. The landscaping was generously paid for by an anonymous donor from the town. The new landscaping includes the addition of shade trees including Shady Ladies and Royal Poincianas. Color was added with Queen Emmas and Crotons. Birds of Paradise now accent the arches of the building. New mulch and bed plants were added to complete the look. We noticed a few plants were damaged in the parking lot from cars, please be careful when maneuvering inside the parking lot. The Landscape Committee has many more ideas for improving landscaping throughout the town. Please call Town Manager Greg Dunham if you are interested in donating to the landscaping fund. 2 Town Meeting Summary January 22, 2008 Town Commission Meeting Approved on consent were the Minutes from the meeting of December 18, the Public Safety Activity report for December, Resolution (adopting policy for collection and dissemination of social security numbers) and (authorizing the PBC Supervisor of Elections to canvass ballots for municipal election). Heard a report on Manalafest by Chair Kathryn Diamond. Discussed the Ritz-Carlton construction site and parking issues. Discussed construction on A1A by FDOT. Discussed construction on pedestrian passageways on A1A. Discussed RO Well 14 with Utility Committee. Discussed final beach and shoreline evaluation report on beach monitoring by Taylor Engineering. This change will take effect in May A Message from Noreen Papatheodorou, Resident and Lantana Education Council Member, As a resident of Manalapan and a member of the Town of Lantana Education Council, I am writing to let you know about some new changes in one of our local schools. We are very proud to let you know Lantana Middle School now has a Medical Sciences Academy. The Lantana Education Council would like to help this program by contacting neighbors like you to let you know about the program, and how you might help. The mission of the Academy is to teach medical science basics to 6th, 7 th and 8 th grade students. If you are involved in the medical, health or pharmaceutical professions, the Academy is in need of supplies such as medical text books, medical models, scrubs for the kids to wear, masks, medical instruments, etc. Small items that you may consider insignificant may be of great use to the students in the program. In addition, donations of money will go directly to these needed items. Violation 19 Theft 4 Introducing New Officers to the Police Force Since October, 2007 three new police officers have joined our force. We welcome them, as we hope you do too. Officer Sun-Day Bockman, joined October 2007 Officer Justin Gratton, joined December 2007 Officer Patrick Auger, joined January 2008 Press Release State Road A1A in the Town of Manalapan will be closed to all North and South through - traffic for 5 days to perform underground construction work. The road is scheduled to be closed between 600 South Ocean Blvd/SR A1A and 4020 South Ocean Blvd./SR A1A commencing at 6:00 am on Monday, March 10, 2008 and scheduled to reopen to traffic at approximately 6:00 pm on Friday, March 14, Northbound traffic will be rerouted via East Ocean Avenue Intracoastal bridge (in Boynton Beach) West to US-1/Federal Highway and Southbound traffic will be rerouted via Ocean Avenue Intracoastal bridge (in Lantana) West to US-1/Federal Highway. Sea Turtle Season This is a reminder that Sea Turtle season starts on March 1st and will continue until October 31st. Palm Beach County beaches are home to three turtle species. Loggerhead sea turtles are threatened and Leatherback and Green sea turtles are endangered. Artificial light illuminating on the beaches at night disrupts nesting behavior of adult and hatchling sea turtles. Some steps you can take to help protect sea turtles are as follows: ~ Turn off all non-essential beach front lighting ~ Use low wattage bulbs such as yellow bug lights ~ Lower, shield, and/or redirect light fixtures to reduce light on the beach ~ Place security lights on motion sensors ~ Use blackout draperies or blinds to reduce interior lighting.
