2 The Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, the seventh leader in the Chabad-Lubavitch dynasty, is considered to have been the most phenomenal Jewish personality of modern times. To hundreds of thousands of followers and millions of sympathizers and admirers around the world, he was - and still is, despite his passing - the Rebbe, undoubtedly, the one individual more than any other, singularly responsible for stirring the conscience and spiritual awakening of world Jewry. 6 October/Сентябрь 2014 Tishrei/Cheshvan 5775 october/oktябрь 2014 Yom Kippur Tishrei 10 (October 4) This is the holiest day of the Jewish year. See times for when fast begins and ends below. Light candles before sunset. While we pushed off the Rabbinic Fast of Gedalia (see Sept. 28) to Sunday, because it was on Shabbos, being that Yom Kippur is a Biblical fast, we do not push it off, and we fast even when it falls on Shabbos. Sukkos Tishrei (October 9-15) The festival of Sukkos, commemorating G-d s enveloping protection of the Jews during their 40 year journey through the desert, is celebrated for seven days. Light holiday candles. Eat all meals in a Sukkah. Shake the four kinds every day, aside from Shabbos. As Yom Kippur is to the Jewish year, so Israel is to the Jewish space: a place to find where you began, and discover who you truly are! Shmini Atzeres Tishrei 22 (October 16) Light holiday candles. Yizkor Memorial Service. Simchas Torah Tishrei 23 (October 17) Light holiday candles. 20 May/МАЙ 2015 Iyar/Sivan 5775 Pesach Sheini - Second Pesach Iyar 14 (May 3) A year after the Exodus, G-d instructed the people of Israel to bring the Passover offering on the afternoon of Nissan 14, and to eat it that evening. There were, however, certain persons who had become ritually impure and could not, therefore, prepare the Passover offering on that day. G-d established the 14th of Iyar as a second Passover for anyone who was unable to bring the offering on its appointed time in the previous month. The day thus represents the second chance achieved by teshuvah the power of repentance and return. In the words of Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak of Lubavitch, The Second Passover means that it s never too late. Lag B Omer Iyar 18 (May 7) Passing of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai ( Rashbi ). On the day of his passing, - the 33rd day of the Omer - Rabbi Shimon gathered his disciples and revealed many of the deepest secrets of the divine wisdom, and instructed them to mark the date as the day of my joy. The plague that killed 24,000 students of Rabbi Akiva ceased on this day. Shavuos - The Giving of the Torah Sivan 6-7 (May 24-25) On the 6th of Sivan of the year 2448 from creation (1313 BCE), seven weeks after the Exodus, G-d revealed Himself on Mount Sinai. The entire people of Israel, as well as the souls of all future generations of Jews, heard G-d declare the first two of the Ten Commandments and witnessed G-d s communication of the other eight through Moses. In Israel, in order to be a realist you must believe in miracles! Sivan 6 (May 24) Passing of King David (837 BCE). Passing of Rabbi Israel Baal Shem Tov (1760) founder of the Chassidic movement. On the first night of Shavuos (Saturday, May 23), we conduct an all-night Torah Study. Hear the Ten Commandments Sunday, May 24. It is customary to eat dairy foods on the first day of Shavuos because the Torah is likened to nourishing milk. Also, the Hebrew word for milk is chalav, and when the numerical values of each of the three letters in the Hebrew word chalav are added together the total is forty. Forty is also the number of days Moses spent on Mount Sinai when receiving the Torah. Jewish Pride Family Fun Fair Sunday, May 3 12:30 pm Rides, Games, Crafts, Attractions, Huge BBQ and More! 22 JUNE/ИЮНЬ 2015 SIVAN/TAMMUZ 5775 Sivan 28 (June 15) On Monday, June 23, Sivan 28 on the Jewish calendar, the Rebbe and his wife arrived in the U.S.A. after escaping Nazi-occupied Paris, and many perilous months in Vichy France. The Rebbe s Day Tammuz 3 (June 20) On the third of Tammuz of the year 2488 from creation (1273 BCE), our prophets teach us, the sun miraculously stood still in the sky over Jericho, delaying nightfall and enabling Joshua and the Jewish people to complete their victory over their enemies. In 1994 on this same date, millions of people around the world heard about the passing of the Rebbe. But the sun has not set. The Rebbe s radiant leadership continues to grow and illuminate the world. As the Zohar teaches, a righteous person, no longer bound by physical limitations, is more profoundly felt then ever before. 24 JULY/ИЮЛЬ 2015 TAMMUZ/AV 5775 The Fast of 17 Tammuz Tammuz 18 (July 5) A fast day, devoted to mourning the breaching of Jerusalem s walls and other tragic events that occurred on this day. The Roman general Apostomus burned the Torah and placed an idol in the Holy Temple. The fighting in Jerusalem continued for three weeks until the 9th of Av, when the Holy Temple was set aflame. This fast is on the 17th of Tammuz but being that this year it is Shabbos, the fast is pushed off to Sunday, July 5 because we do not fast on Shabbos. Shabbos Chazon (July 25) The Shabbos before the Ninth of Av is called Shabbos Chazon ( Shabbos of Vision ) after the opening words of the day s reading from the prophets. On this Shabbos, say the Chassidic masters, we are granted a vision of the Third Temple; we may not see it with our physical eyes, but our souls see it. Tisha B Av Menachem-Av 10 (July 26) Both the first and second Holy Temples which stood in Jerusalem were destroyed on Av 9: the First Temple by the Babylonians in the year 3338 from creation (423 BCE), and the second by the Romans in 3829 (69 CE). Being that this year the 9th of Av is Shabbos, the fast is pushed off to Sunday, July 26 because we do not fast on Shabbos. Menachem-Av 15 (July 31) A happy and joyous day.
