SCRIPTURE READING PLAN FOR 5779 ( )

1 ) This plan takes the Torah and Haftarah cycle as the foundation for reading entire Bible. Torah and Haftarah readings follow the one-year Jewish and Messianic divisions, with Torah readings divided into daily portions and Haftarah readings occurring on Shabbat. (Note that chapter and verse designations are according to the Christian rather than Jewish numbering.) Torah and Haftarah readings for the Moedim (Feasts of the Lord) appear in italics. Readings for the rest of the Tanakh (Old Testament) and Apostolic Writings (New Testament) proceed through a daily plan that covers all of those Scriptures over the course of the year. The first weekly readings for 5779 correspond to the final weekly readings of the previous cycle, which is why this plan begins with the last chapters of both the Tanakh and Apostolic Writings. It is customary to read the book of Esther on Purim. 5 The Shabbat before the first of Adar (Adar II in leap years) is Shabbat Shekalim (Sabbath of Shekels) in remembrance of the commandment for all male Hebrews to contribute half a shekel for maintenance of the Tabernacle. The custom is to read from Exodus 30 and II Kings 12, which tells of the commandment and its application in the First Temple period. Shabbat Shekalim is observed in preparation for Purim. 5

Haman, the villain in the Purim story, was a descendant of Amalek. Since the Torah includes a command to remember what Amalek did to Israel, it is customary to read the applicable passages from Deuteronomy 25 and I Samuel Purim is sundown March 20 to sundown March 21. It is customary to read the book of Esther on Purim. 8 March 30 is Shabbat Parah, the Sabbath of the Red Heifer, which is observed on the Shabbat before Shabbat HaChodesh. As a reminder to begin preparations for Pesach, the traditional reading is Numbers 19:1-22, which explains the purpose of the red heifer in purification of the nation, and Ezekiel 36, which is a prophecy of Israel s purification and restoration in the latter days. 6
