4 PAGE 4 Festive Meal It is a mitzvah to eat and drink on the day before Yom Kippur. It is customary to eat kreplach a pastry with meat filling. Yom Kippur Afternoon Prayers During the afternoon prayers, the Al Cheit confession prayer is recited before the conclusion of the Amidah prayer. Honey Cake There is an age-old Jewish custom to bet n lekach or ask for honey cake before Yom Kippur. In addition to the blessing for a sweet year represented by the honey s sweetness, our Rabbis explain that in case it was decreed upon us to need the kindness of others during the upcoming year, we pray that we need ask for nothing more than the honey cake we receive from a relative, friend or acquaintance. Eat the Final Meal One should eat only light foods such as plain cooked chicken and chicken soup. It is customary not to eat fish at this meal it can bring on thirst. Bless the Children It is customary to bless one s children after the meal. Change Your Shoes On Yom Kippur we do not wear leather shoes. Light Candles Girls and all women who are in the household (or if there isn t a woman in the house, the head of the household), should light candles 18 minutes before sunset, and recite the holiday blessings. Rosh Hashanahis the beginning of the year. It is called Rosh Hashanah, literally meaning Head of the year, and not merely the beginning of the year. As a head contains the life, and is the nerve center of the entire body which is controlled by the brain, so does Rosh Hashanah contain the life and sustenance for the entire year. Every Rosh Hashanah, we renew our acceptance and proclamation of G-d s Kingship of the Universe at large, and over each of us in particular, we thereby turn toward Him, to lead our lives in accordance with His will. G-d accepts our prayers and is willing to reign over the Universe and grant us all a good and sweet year. Light Candles Girls and all women in the household (or if there isn t a woman in the house, the head of the household), should light candles 18 minutes before sunset, and recite the holiday blessings. Traditional Foods It is customary to eat foods which symbolize sweetness, blessings and abundance. We dip the Challah (traditional Shabbat and Holiday bread) in honey. On the first evening of Rosh Hashanah after eating the first piece of Challah, we dip a piece of apple in honey. A head (of fish or fowl) is served. We eat carrot tzimis (in Yiddish carrots are called Merren which means to multiply). Eat: Light Candles: Girls and women light candles and recite the blessings on Shemini Atzeret, and after dark on Simchat Torah. Hear The Shofar It is customary to sound trumpets at the coronation of a King. Similarly, on Rosh Hashanah, as we crown G-d, so we sound the Shofar. The shofar also serves as a wake-up call to repent and return to G-d. Tashlich On the first day of Rosh Hashanah, after the afternoon Mincha prayer, we go to a lake, river or the sea and recite the Tashlich prayers, where we symbolically cast our sins into the water and leave our old shortcomings behind us, starting the year with a clean slate. Rosh Hashana On Shemini Atzeret we eat a festive meal in the Sukkah, without reciting the blessing Leisheiv Ba Sukkah. Rejoice: We celebrate the completion of the year round cycle of reading the Torah. All the Torah scrolls are taken from the Ark and carried in a parade around the synagogue seven times. We rejoice, sing and dance with the Torahs, for the reestablishment of our covenant with the Torah as a groom rejoices with his bride. For the Torah is betrothed to Israel as a wife is to her husband. Children are given gifts of candy and fruit underscoring the special role they play in the perpetuaton of Torah. Shemini Atzeret & Simchat Torah It is a biblical Mitzvah to eat in the Sukkah on the first night of Sukkot. All other meals are eaten in the Sukkah as well. The mitzvah of dwelling, eating and spending time in the Sukkah is unique in that the entire person is involved in a mitzvah. The mitzvah of Sukkah encompasses every part of the body. Every limb and cell of the person is completely submerged, surrounded and encompassed by the Sukkah. When eating bread or cake in the Sukkah we recite the blessing Leisheiv Ba Sukkah. Light Candles: Women and girls light candles the first two nights to usher in the holiday. The Four Kinds One of the special mitzvahs of Sukkot is The Four Kinds, a citron, a palm branch, three myrtle twigs and two willow branches. Each morning of the holiday (except for Shabbat) we hold them close together, recite a blessing over them and, as is customary, wave them to all the four directions, upward and downward. It is customary to bind the Lulav on the day before Sukkot, preferably inside a Sukkah. Call Chabad to purchase (as well as get help in setting up) your own Sukkah and Etrog/Lulav set. Sukkot SWEET CHALLAH 5 lbs. flour 4 packages yeast (3 Tbsp.) 4 ½ cups warm water ¾ cup oil 2 Tbsp. salt 3 eggs ½ cup honey 1 cup sugar 1 egg, beaten for glazing after shaping sesame or poppy seeds for topping Mix water with yeast and 2 tbsp. sugar; set aside. Combine all other ingredients except flour. When yeast and sugar begin to bubble, add them to the mixture. Add ¼ bag flour and start to mix. Continue adding flour as you mix the dough; begin to knead with your hands as dough forms. Dough will be done when it pulls away from the sides of the bowl without sticking. Set dough aside in a bowl to rise for 2 hours; punch down occasionally. Preheat oven to 400. Braid challah loaves and place on greased pans. Let rise another ½ hour. Brush with egg and sprinkle with sesame or poppy seeds, if desired. Bake at 400 for 10 minutes, then lower the temperature to 350 and continue baking until golden brown.

For Reservations & Information log on to: or call: The Shabbat Candles A married woman customarily lights two candles and may add an additional one for each of her children. An unmarried girl should light one candle in deference to her mother. As soon as a young girl can understand the idea of the Shabbat and can say the blessing (approximately 3 years old) her parents should provide her with a candlestick and teach her to kindle the Shabbat candles. The young girl should light before her mother in case she needs assistance from her. It is customary to put a few coins into a Tzedakah pushka (charity box) before lighting the candles. The correct time to light the Shabbat candles is 18 minutes before sunset every Friday. Young girls should light just prior to this time. The Festival Candles Just as candles are lit in honor of the Shabbat so are they lit in honor of the festivals. Various blessings are recited on different festivals. See the chart Blessings for Festival Candle Lighting. CAUTION: When lighting after the onset of a festival, a pre-existing flame must be used to light the candles since it is prohibited to create a new flame by striking a match or lighter, etc. However, it is permissible to use (or transfer fire from) a flame burning continuously since the onset of the festival, such as a pilot light, gas or candle flame. Procedure for Lighting the Shabbat Candles The woman (or young girl) lights the candles, then spreads her hands out around the candles, drawing her hands inward in a circular motion three times to indicate her acceptance of the sanctity of the Shabbat. She then covers her eyes and says the Blessing: Bo-ruch A-toh Ado-noi E-lol-hei-nu Me-lech Ho-olom A-sher Ki-de-sho-nu Be-mitz-vo-sov Ve-tzi-vo-nu Le-had-lik Ner Shel Shabbos Ko-desh. Blessed are You, L-rd, our G-d, King of the universe, who has hallowed us through His commandments, and has commanded us to kindle the light of the holy Shabbat. She then uncovers her eyes to behold the Shabbat Lights. The time of lighting is considered especially propitious to pray to G-d for health and happiness. The prayer is readily accepted because it is said during the performance of this great mitzvah of lighting the Shabbat Candles. CAUTION: The candles must be lit before sunset. It is prohibited and is a desecration of the Shabbat to light the candles after sunset.
