Mother Teresa Week 5, Term 3 Dear Members of our Community of Faith, Congratulations to Sam Whitehead who is our Hot Chips winner for this week. It is great to see our senior students leading the way in enacting our school rules. Well done! It has been a busy few weeks in the SMMC Community with Gala Dinner, Parent Evening and Bunnings BBQ in amongst the normal day to day events in the life of a school. These have all been wonderful events, with two of them helping us to grow richer in monetary terms and one helping us to grow richer in our family relationships. I m sure those parents who were able to make it to our parent evening found it to be very worthwhile. I have three copies of Gerard s book As I Have Loved You, so let me know if you would like a copy for $20. Book Week Australia! Story Country Next week is Book Week, a time to celebrate the joy of reading!! Both the Teacher s Favourite Book Competition and Colouring in Competition were due today and Mrs Mott will have some winners for us next week. Primary students will dress up for a parade next Wednesday 24 th August at 11:20am. Students need to come to school in school uniform and get changed at Recess please. Come along if you can. Our K,1,2 students have an exciting excursion to the Lavington Library next Tuesday 23 rd August, where they will experience some of the Book Week Books and a Library somewhat bigger than our school one! Thank you to Miss MacLean and Mr Flores for organising this experience for the students. Saint Mary MacKillop Gala Dinner Thank you to all who were able to buy items at the Gala Dinner and contribute so generously to our School Building Fund both on the night and throughout this year. The Gala Dinner raised a whopping $11,000, which brings our total raised for our Sports Court to $31,000. Thank you for your generosity. School Concert On Friday 2 nd September beginning at 7:00pm we will enjoy watching our students in action as they broadcast their talents. Further auditions for the concert are next Tuesday 23 rd August at lunchtime, so make sure you re ready! NAPLAN The NAPLAN testing results have arrived and these have been sent home with the students, who have been directed to give them straight to their parents. If you would like to discuss Friday 19 th August the results with your child s teacher, please make a time to catch up with them. These tests were conducted quite some time ago and the students have been engaged in lots of great learning since that time. The results are a snapshot of your child on that particular day and one form of assessment we can use as a school to help improve student learning outcomes. Bunnings Barbeque Thank you to all those people who came to assist at the BBQ last Saturday. Your generosity is much appreciated. We went through 490 sausages, 8kg of onions, 30 loaves of bread and about 80 cans of soft drink for a profit of $1077. This is a great result. Jindera Summer Tennis The Jindera tennis club are looking for children 8 12 years old who would like to play in our summer competition. Mums & Dads are also welcome. Please contact either Pat Hayes or Paul Barnett if interested. For junior coaching contact Leanne Wheaton or Lost Property The lost property box is well and truly overflowing! If you are missing any items please come and have a look through. I think there may even be some akubra hats in there from Summer and they re not cheap! 2017 Kinder Enrolments I have enjoyed showing some of our 2017 Kinder students through the school this week and look forward to catching up with anyone else wanting to send their child to Kinder next year. In order to be able to plan effectively for next year, I would like to have these enrolments finalised as soon as possible. SMMC Fete With a very busy schedule of events behind us, we can now switch focus to our annual fete coming up on Saturday 22 nd October. This day happens to be the feast day of Pope Saint John Paul II, so we ll pray to him for its success. Much groundwork has already been done, but there is still much to do. Please have a read of the fete information on page 3 and 4 to see what you can do to assist. Raffle tickets have also been sent home to sell. Thank you in advance!! Working in teams, they designed, created and evaluated a game. Mr Burton came in to play the games with the students and was most impressed at the thinking and effort that had been put into each game. Great learning 3/4s!

3 SMMC FETE 22 ND OCTOBER 2016 We will be holding our annual fete on Saturday 22 nd October This is our major fundraising event and the support of people in our school community and beyond have made previous fetes very successful. We are aiming to improve on last year s total of $8, Many thanks to those who have attended fete subcommittee meetings and have already been working on collecting donations from businesses for our wheel. Some ways to start preparing for the fete and how to help on the day are listed below: SELL RAFFLE TICKETS A book of 10 tickets at $2 each is attached. More books are available from Vera Galvin. There will be a prize for the family who sells the most tickets! DONATE A BRAND NEW ITEM If you have any brand new items that would be suitable as prizes for the wheel and are able to donate them, they would be greatly appreciated. These will need to be still in their packaging. FIND TRASH AND TREASURE ITEMS These items need to be clean and not broken and may be dropped off at school at the beginning of Term 4. POTTING PLANTS Example: buy a punnet of seedlings and plant each one into a separate pot. Herbs and vegetable seedlings are very popular and sell quickly. MAKE MYSTERY BOTTLES Use a clean, empty 1.25 L plastic soft drink bottle, cut it in half and place a few small stationery items/toys/wrapped lollies inside then tape up the bottle. Any student who brings along one or more mystery bottles will receive an icy pole on Icy Pole Day early in Term 4. COLLECT DONATIONS FROM BUSINESSES If you are able to assist with this, please contact the school office. PACKAGE PRIZES FOR THE WHEEL Help would be greatly appreciated by Donalee Murphy to make up prize packs for the wheel on Friday 21 st October at school. VOLUNTEER TO HELP ON A STALL Check the list of stalls (on separate page) and write your name next to one you can assist with, even if it s only for a short time. Please add any other ideas you may have for a stall or competition, especially if you are willing to set up and run it. SET UP AND PACK UP ON FETE DAY Many hands make light work! NEXT FETE SUB COMMITTEE MEETING: Wednesday 31 st August at 2.30 pm in the school library JINDERA STREET STALL We will be holding a street stall on Saturday 17 th September from 7.30am am outside the Jindera Newsagency and Take Away. We will be looking for donations of cakes, cupcakes, slices, muffins and biscuits to sell. This is a good opportunity to promote the fete and sell raffle tickets to the local community. 5 LIVING OUT THE FAITH IN FAMILY LIFE Mary-Queen of our Hearts, Queen of our Homes. Last Monday was the solemnity of the Assumption, the day Our Blessed Mother was taken body and soul into heaven. This coming Monday 22 nd August we celebrate the Queenship of Mary. This feast instituted by Pope Pius XXII celebrates Mary crowned in glory in heaven. This is the woman clothed with the sun, the moon at her feet and a crown of twelve stars. Contemplate Mary in her humility. Who was Mary to the world but a simple Jewish girl living in Nazareth. Joseph, a carpenter, was her earthly spouse. She was the mother of only one son, who was born in a stable while they were away from home staying in Bethlehem. Little did the people of Nazareth know that this meek and mild virgin had been chosen from all eternity to be the Mother of God and that because of her yes the word made flesh was living among them. Many of the eastern icons show Our Lady embellished with exquisite crowns, golden and encrusted with precious jewels - the most beautiful crowns humanly possible. We, like these great artisans can bestow on Mary a loving crown. I have neither gold nor silver, nor virtues to adorn her crown. I can only come up with acts of contrition, deep sorrow for my sins and shortcomings and continual acts of love. The crown I make for my Queen will be made of precious stones, as precious as I can find. (Orozco, Look up to Mary). This is the crown most pleasing to her. Mary is the Mother of God and our mother also. We are her children and like children we never outgrow that loving guidance that only a mother can give. Stay close to her for she will show us the way of perfection, She is not the light but the light shines in her. (Orozco). She will draw us and our families close to her son. Salve Regina - Hail Holy Queen. O Mary, My Queen, My Mother, I give myself entirely to thee and to show my devotion to thee, I consecrate, this day, my eyes, my ears, my mouth, my heart, my whole being without reserve. Wherefore good Mother as I am thine own, keep me, guard me as thy property and possession. Amen (Indulgence by Bl Pius IX, August 5th 1851, when said with a Hail Mary in the morning and the evening to overcome temptation.) Virtue for the month of August - Justice A just person strives constantly to give others what is their due, so that they can fulfil their duties and exercise their rights as persons (the right to life, to cultural and moral goods, to material goods), as parents, as children, as citizens, as workers, as rulers, etc.- and he also like to see that others do likewise.
