1 1) Prayer for the State of Israel 1) Our Father in Heaven, Rock of Israel and its Redeemer, 2) bless the State of Israel, the beginning of the flowering of our redemption. 3) Shield it beneath the wings of Your love. Spread over it Your canopy of peace; 4) send Your light and Your truth to its leaders, officers, and counselors, and direct them with good counsel before You. 5) Strengthen the defenders of our holy land; grant them, our God, salvation and crown them with the crown of victory. 6) Establish peace in the land, and everlasting joy for its inhabitants. 7) Remember our brethren, the whole house of Israel, in all the lands of their dispersion. 8) Speedily cause them to ualk upright to Zion Your city, to Jerusalem Your dwelling-place 9) as it is written in the Torah of Your servant Moses (Deut 30:4-5): 'Even if you are dispersed in the uttermost parts of the world, from there YHVH your God will gather and fetch you. YHVH your God will bring you into the land which your fathers possessed, and you shall possess it.' 10) Unite our heart to love and revere Your Name, and to observe all the precepts of Your Torah. Send us speedily the descendent of David, the anointed one of your righteousness, to redeem those who await the end of your salvation. 11) Shine forth in Your glorious majesty over all the inhabitants of Your world. Let everything that breathes proclaim: The Lord God of Israel is King; His majesty rules over all. Amen, Selah. ו ה ב יא ך י י א ל ה י ך א ל ה אָ ר ץ א שׁ ר י ר שׁוּ א ב ת י ך ו יר שׁ תּ הּ, ו ה יט ב ך ו ה ר בּ ך מ א ב ת י ך. 10) ו י ח ד ל ב ב נוּ ל אַה ב ה וּל י ר אָה א ת שׁ מ ך, ו ל שׁ מ ר א ת כּ ל דּ ב ר י תוֹר ת ך, וּשׁ ל ח ל נוּ מ ה ר ה בּ ן דּ ו ד מ שׁ י ח צ ד ק ך, ל פ דוֹת מ ח כּ י ק ץ י שׁוּע ת ך. 11) הוֹפ ע בּ ה ד ר גּ אוֹן ע זּ ך ע ל כּ ל יוֹשׁ ב י ת ב ל אַר צ ך, ו י אמ ר כּ ל א שׁ ר נ שׁ מ ה ב אַפּוֹ, י י א ל ה י י שׂ ר א ל מ ל ך וּמ ל כוּתוֹ בּ כּ ל מ שׁ ל ה, אָמ ן ס ל ה. 2 ז( ה/ 2) Origins of Praying for the State Jeremiah Seek the welfare of the city to which I have exiled you and pray to YHVH in its behalf; for in its prosperity you shall prosper (Jeremiah 29:7) 3) Origins of Praying for the State Rabbinic Rabbi Hanina, deputy High Priest said: Pray for the welfare of the government, for it people did not fear it, they would swallow each other alive. (Pirke Avot 3:2) 4) Prayer for the State during Torah reading They had the custom of blessing the king and praying to God that He should help him, and strengthen him over his enemies, as it is written (Jer. 29:7): Seek the welfare of the city (Sefer Abudarham, 14 th c. Spain) 5) Israel vs. Bavel Close the blessing with redemption. (M Pesahim 10:6) Rava said: In (the blessings for) Keriat Shma and Hallel who redeemed Israel. In the amidah: who redeems Israel. R. Yehoshua ben Levi said: One must ר' יהושע בן לוי אומר צריך להזכיר את mention all of them (previous discussion כולן וצריך לומר צור ישראל וגואלו of: splitting of the sea, killing of the first born, kingship and redemption from Egypt) and one must say: Rock of Israel and its Redeemer. (Jerusalem Talmud Berachot 1:6; 3d) 6) The dawn of our redemption This prayer by the Israeli Chief Rabbinate does not hesitate to describe the State of Israel as the beginning of the dawn of redemption of the Jewish people. Messianic expectations by religious Jews are not new or unusual More than merely unusual, however, if not altogether without precedent, is the linking of these, even by fervent believers, with a historical event already clearly and unequivocally present.hence a prayer which links this present state with the messianic future reflects a boldness that the ancient sages of the gentiles might well have considered tantamount to hubris, or tempting the gods. (Emil Fackenheim, The Jewish Return into History, pp ) 2

(Isaiah 61:11) 8) The Prayer in the Background Lie us down, YHVH our God, in peace, and raise us up, our king, to life. Spread over us the canopy of your peace, and direct us with good counsel before You. Save us, for the sake of your name. Defend us. (Hashkivenu blessing, siddur) 9) The Long Redemption Since the rabbis established Hashkivenu (lie us down), it resembles a long redemption. (B Talmud Berachot 4b) 10) Ingathering of the Exiles When all these things befall you the blessing and the curse that I have set before you and you take them to heart amidst the various nations to which YHVH your God has banished you and you return to YHVH your God, and you and your children heed His command with all your heart and soul, just as I enjoin upon you this day, then YHVH your God will restore your fortunes and take you back in love. He will bring you together again from all the peoples were YHVH your God has scattered you. Even if your outcasts are at the ends of the world, from there He will fetch you. And YHVH your God will bring you to the land that your fathers possessed, and you shall possess it. And He will make you more prosperous and more numerous than your fathers.
