Message from Rabbi Yamin Levy LIHA, Rabbi Shalom My Dear Parents, Students and Friends, The Perasha this week continues the theme of last week s reading which teaches us the fundamentals of creating a community with G-d and Torah at its center. Hashem s command, Ve'asu li mikdash Ve'shakhanti Be'tokham, "Make for Me a Sanctuary and I will dwell in their midst" - is now given true shape as the Children of Israel depart from the Mount Sinai and begin to move and settle as a camp, as a community. The Sanctuary, G-d's presence, lives in the center of the camp, and the tribes are arranged, each with its distinct position, each with its banner, around the Mishkan the Sanctuary. The Jewish people have left Mount Sinai the place where G-d was revealed and the Torah given. The description found in the Perasha is in itself a powerful lesson. The Jewish people enter into the larger world and remain calibrated towards Hashem s presence directing their every action towards G-d and brining Torah to the larger world. Another important lesson in the description of the Jewish camp in the desert has to do with the definition of One People. One people does not mean that everyone is alike or the same. True unity, creating a bonded, cohesive community, comes from respecting differences - ish al diglo - each tribe with its own uniqueness, its own distinctiveness preserved. Some are on the left, some on the right, some North, some South. What held them together was a shared commitment to respect each other's boundaries, to value their degalim, their distinct flags, their diversity, and to exist together as one people with a shared orientation towards G-d's presence in their midst. Unfortunately there is an element in Judaism today that believes that the only Jews who count are those who act within a narrow definition - a definition that is getting narrower each day. It is a leadership that is fearful of diversity that believes that unity can come only if all Jews act and believe in exactly the same way - their way. Sephardic tradition has always believed in spreading Hashem's Torah and its teachings, and at the same time teaching a respect for all Jews. Even those Jews who never enter the Sanctuary can have G-d in their midst. Ours is a tradition that teaches unity that is fused by a shared orientation, not by sameness, but rather a unity that values and respects difference. In a world where small-mindedness and intolerance is rife, in a world where Jewish identity and shared values are elusive concepts, this is a Herculean challenge indeed, but in the striving to achieve it, ours is a community that can do much to transform our people and our respect for one another. This message seems obvious to many of us. Let us all work together to build a true machaneh Yisrael, with all its degalim, with all its diversity. 3 Toddler- Morah Galit Take A Look At LIHA Please save the date, June 15 is our moving up party. This week we reviewed colors, opposites, shapes and we started practicing for our party. Shabbat shalom Toddler- Morah Karen This week we resumed right into our 5 senses unit. So far we covered the sense of touch, sound, and smell. We made a project this week where we traced each child s hand and on each finger they got to feel a different texture from soft, hard, fluffy, bumpy, and smooth. We also tested the children s listening skills (sense of hearing) by making a sound and they had to repeat the sound. We also asked them what sound different objects make (ie: a fire truck) and they all knew their sounds! This week we also started to learn our alphabet. We taught them the letter, the sound, what it looks like, and what word sounds with that letter. The yeladim truly enjoyed it and surprisingly knew some of their letters. Just a reminder that our farewell breakfast will be on Friday, June 15th at 9:30 AM. Save the date! Nursery We hope everyone had a wonderful Shavuot holiday and enjoyed all the Shavuot projects. We are continuing to work on our "academic sheets" in order to complete our recognition of the alphabet. We are re-reading some of our favorite books including, "Pinkalicious", "David Gets In Trouble", "Rufus Goes To School", " Purplicious" and "Dear Zoo". Our Shabbat Ima and Abba were Avigail and Ariel S. Pre K We began writing a book this week called, All About Me. Over the next few weeks we will talk about all the things that make us special and all our favorite things. This book will be a special gift at graduation. The Hebrew letter this week was.ש We are working on a שמע card to say at night before we go to sleep. The English letter was W. We water painted and played a watermelon counting game.

4 Kindergarten English We had an enjoyable visit to the NY Hall of Science this past Tues. Unfortunately, it drizzled ever so slightly and the play area was closed. Instead we saw a wonderful movie in 3D about the wonders that live in the ocean. We read Old MacDonald had a workshop and discussed tools we use to build things such as a hammer, chisel, saw, screwdriver, file and drill. We also read, Old MacDonald in the City. The "K" class worked on prepositions and prepositional phrases, fact vs opinion and the short sound of O/o. We completed our unit on three dimensional shapes for math and worked on water in science. Have a nice long weekend again and Shabbat Shalom. Kindergarten Hebrew Hope you all had a great Shabbat and Yom Tov!!! ר It has been a busy week!! We concentrated on the letter RESH and we finished the book of Resh( ספר ר ). As usual we revised all the א -ב letters too. One of the points that we discussed in the classroom about the Parashat Nasso this week, was that if we make a sin we must say Viduy which means we admit to Hashem that we did something wrong and we are sorry!! And we will not do it again!! Our שבת אמא ואבא this week were Elora & Elan. 1 st Grade English This week first grade is continuing the math unit on measurement, exploring standard versus non-standard forms of measurement. For spelling, we are learning about diphthongs-ow and -ou words, like town, flower, our... Enjoy the weekend! 1st Grade Hebrew We are moving on nicely in our comprehension book.יסודות הלשון, and with our grammar book מקראה שלי We learned how to use the words, on =על, under =תחת =next to, and more. We also practice writing על יד sentences using our spelling words and we learned parasha.נשוא Shabbat Shalom!!

5 2 nd Grade English The second grade had a wonderful week. We began the week by going on a trip and learned how science is all around the world. The students really enjoyed learning about money and counting the coins together. 2 nd Grade Hebrew We are moving very nicely in our book of Lehavin Velehaskil. The children learned to work independently. Shabbath Shalom 3 rd Grade English Please join us on Thursday, June 14th at 3 p.m. in our classroom for our Author Celebration. It will be about a 45 minute presentation of their work. 3 rd Grade Hebrew It was a short week and busy week. We are reviewing all that we learned this year and getting ready for our final test. Please remind your children to go over their notes and materials that they learned. Wishing you all Shabbat Shalom

6 4 th Grade English This week the 4th grade is finishing up their unit on converting decimals to fractions. They also had a great time getting messy preparing a project on the solar system. 4 th Grade Hebrew The class is starting to feel the end of school year. We are finishing a lot of the curriculum that was planned for this year. The class also finished sefer yehoshua and parashat vayechi in chumash. We also reviewed a lot of what we learned during the year 5 th Grade English Your child has been assigned their role for our graduation ceremony. Please make sure they are practicing every night so they are prepared! Please join us on Thursday, June 7th at 9:30 a.m. in our classroom for our Author Celebration. It will be about a 45 minute presentation of their work. Graduation has been moved to 6/14 at 7:00 p.m. and we look forward to seeing you there! 5 th Grade Hebrew 5th grade is awesome! We had a test on Shemot Perek Daled this week and started Perek Heh. What a wonderful accomplishment! Graduation is in the air, we are enthusiastically preparing for the big day.
