1 Chumash Curriculum for grades K-12 Sarah Rosenbaum, Miriam Kalter, and Rachel Immerman Grade K Recognize the different Hebrew letters and their corresponding sounds. Write their names and simple words using Hebrew print letters Listen, retell, or act out one story/event from the weekly Torah readings/parshat Hashavua. Name the Parshat Hashavua Sing songs about receiving the Torah from Hashem. Grade 1 Read Hebrew print letters with nekudot, as well as full Hebrew words and sentences Write simple sentences using Hebrew letters Identify, read, and write Hebrew script letters Learn and restate the overview of what happens in each Parshat Hashavua, as well as select Midrashim. Begin to develop a Hebrew vocabulary by reading, writing, and speaking in Hebrew Grade 2 Express a love, excitement, and appreciation of learning Torah Find requested Parsha, Perek and Passuk in a Chumash List the five books of the Torah Read passukim inside a Chumash accurately Identify and translate simple, reoccurring shorashim like say, speak, call, take, give, etc. Begin to identify and translate specific prefixes, such as he (vav yud), she (vav taf), they (vav yud vav), from (mem), to (lamed), the (hey), etc. Begin to identify and translate specific suffixes, such as his (vav), hers (hay), theirs (hay mem), yours (chaf mem), to (kamatz hey), etc.

Explore the concepts of the Creation of the world, Cheit Eitz Had at, and Brit. Grade 3 Identify and read Rashi Script Be introduced to who Rashi is as a person and commentary Read and translate select Rashis with important messages Read the passukim according to troupe, stopping and pausing when appropriate. Identify and translate more and new Shorashim found in the passukim Answer review questions on the passukim independently List all of the Parshiot in Sefer Berashit. Grade 4 Identify Rashis question and answer in select Rashis Identify prefixes, suffixes, and shorashim independently in passukim. Translate a passuk accurately independently Begin to answer guided questions on the passukim before learning the passukim in class Begin to learn select Midrashim/deeper messages from stories in the Torah. Vayishlach, Vayeishev, Mikeitz, Vayigash, and Vayechi. Explore the topics of Mechirat Yosef, Yosef in Mitzrayim, and Birchat Yaakov.

3 Grade 5 List the parshiot is Sefer Shemot Develop the skills to work and understand text with a Chavruta Answer pointed comprehension questions on passukim independently Ask questions on the text, develop their own answers, and discover their/other answers in select Rashis. Learn the passukim and summarize what happens in each Parsha in Sefer Shemot. Explore and discuss the concepts of Galut and Geula, Bechira Chafshit with the Makkot, the Aseret Hadibrot, miracles, the Golden Calf, and the building of the mishkan. Grade 6 List the parshiot in Sefer Vayikra and Sefer Bamidbar. Be introduced to the idea that there are multiple commentators on the Torah read, translate, and explain select Rashi s and Ibn Ezras. Explain their questions in passukim according to Rashi and other select Meforshim that they will learn outside. Prepare the passukim in a perek in Chumash independently Bamidbar, Nasso, Be halosecha, Shelach, and Korach. Explore and discuss the concepts of Bnei Yisrael testing Hashem and Moshe, Cheit Meraglim, and good and bad leadership qualities. Grade 7 Be introduced to Ramban as a person and as a commentary Read and translate select Rambans together as a class Chukat, Balak, Pinchas, Mattot, Ma asei, and Parshat Kedoshim (from Sefer Vayikra)

4 Explore and discuss the concepts of Chukim and Mishpatim, zealousness for Hashem, and holiness. Grade 8 List the parshiot is Sefer Devarim Compare the answers of select meforshim on passukim. Learn select perakim in Sefer Devarim; summarize what happens in the Parshiot in Sefer Devarim. Explore and discuss the concepts of Aseret Hadibrot being repeated, Shema, Birchat Moshe and his death. Grade 9 perek of Sefer Shemot weekly. They will answer guided questions on these passukim and Rashis independently (Bekiyut Program). Be introduced to the history of select Acharonim on the Torah, like R Hirsch, Or Hachayim, Klei Yakar. Read and summarize select acharonim (Or Hachaim, R Hirsch, Klei Yakar, Sforno) on the text. Research the topic of the Makkot using Rashi, other reshonim, and acharonim, and write a report. (The commentaries will be provided) on the topics of Shibbud Mitzrayim, Rosh Chodesh, Kriyat Yam Suf, Mattan Torah/Aseret Hadibrot, Cheit Haegel, and the building of the Mishkan. Grade 10 perek of Sefer Bamidbar weekly. They will answer guided questions on these passukim and Rashis independently (Bekiyut Program). Analyze and develop questions on the text Look for answers to their questions in commentaries of their choice Break apart and paraphrase select Rambans independently Navigate a library to find appropriate Bible commentaries

5 Research and write a paper on the mitzvoth of Challah, Tzizit, or Birchat Kohanim using Rashi, Reshonim, and Acharonim. on the topics of Degalim, the 10 tests in the Midbar, Meraglim, positive and negative leadership qualities, and Cheit Mei Meriva. Grade 11 perek of Sefer Devarim weekly. They will answer guided questions on these passukim and Rashis independently (Bekiyut Program). Be introduced to the biography and select comments of the Rav. Research project (can be presented with a poster, skit, creative writing activity, or video) on the differences of one of the Aseret Hadibrot from Sefer Bamidbar and Sefer Shemot using Rashi, Reshonim, and Acharonim. Research and write a paper on the mitzvah of Kedoshim Tehiu using Rashi, Reshonim, and Acharonim. on the topics of Mishna Torah (Moshe repeating the Torah), Ba al Tosef/Ba al Tigra, Eshet Yifat Toar, Shema, and Korbonot. Grade 12 perek of Sefer Berashit weekly. They will answer guided questions on these passukim and Rashis independently (Bekiyut Program). Explain the idea of Adam I and Adam II according to the Rav. Research an individual in Sefer Berashit using various meforshim and Midrashim, and present it to the class. Read and explain whole perakim with Rashi, Ramban, and other key meforshim with a chavruta. Relate a passage in Berashit to their own lives, and complete a unique project expressing this connection on the topics of Briyat Haolam, Cheit Eitz Hada at, sibling rivalry with Kayin and Hevel, difference of the generation of Noach and the

6 generation of the Tower of Babel, Shidduchim with Rivka, family dynamics, Mechirat Yosef, and Birchat Yaakov.
