Baruch Ha-Ba Welcome to Temple Solel Welcome to Temple Solel We are a Reform Jewish Congregation located in San Diego s North Coastal Community of Cardiff by the Sea. Temple Solel was founded in 1978 and now serves over 800 families throughout the County. Temple Solel provides Sabbath and Holiday services, an Early Childhood Center, a Religious and Hebrew School, Adult Education programs, Social Action projects, Sisterhood, Brotherhood, and three active Youth Groups. We are dedicated to providing Jewish religious, cultural and social activities through services, programs and events which are enjoyed by our members and guests. Our congregation generates an atmosphere of warmth, kindles Jewish awareness, and has established a strong Jewish home in the North Coastal Community. At Temple Solel, the teachings of Judaism are translated into positive, meaningful, creative life experiences for people of all ages and backgrounds. We pride ourselves on the quality of our interpersonal relationships; we truly reach out to each other in support and caring. Worship We offer a wide variety of worship service experiences. The first Friday of the month is our Family Service which includes our children s choir, birthday blessings and a story from one of our Rabbi s. Other Erev Shabbat services are Shabbat Unplugged with our all congregant band, as well as creative services and programming that appeals to congregants of all ages. Please check our website for exact dates and times. The Jewish year begins with the Days of Awe. We open our celebration of the creation of the world on Rosh Hashanah, Tashlich at Cardiff Seaside State Beach, and ten days later, Yom Kippur. We not only have services that speak to adults, but also special services geared for toddlers and school age children. On each of the three pilgrimage festivals - Sukkot, Pesach and Shavuot - morning services are held on both the first and concluding days. Yizkor is included on Shavuot and the last day of Sukkot and Pesach. We believe in the full spiritual range of Jewish observance! We celebrate Purim, Chanukah and Simchat Torah with a strong emphasis on family involvement and joy. 2

Early Childhood Center Temple Solel Early Childhood Center is open to members and non-members of the Temple Solel community from birth through Kindergarten. Our curriculum puts equal emphasis on social, emotional, physical, cognitive, and spiritual development. We create an environment that encourages exploration, creativity and self-discovery. Our hands-on and developmental approach provides a healthy balance of structured and unstructured activities. The children s learning is enriched with Shabbat and Jewish holiday celebrations, as well as specialty classes including: library, music, physical education, and yoga. Striving to provide for the total well-being of each child, we create a loving and nurturing environment that supports the growth of positive social skills and self-esteem. Jewish culture and identity are integrated into all aspects of our program. We stimulate our children s curiosity through appealing to the senses, instilling the confidence to attempt challenges, and awakening a lifetime love of Jewish learning. The youth groups at Temple Solel have been invaluable to my family. They have inspired a sense of community and belonging in my kids. Craig and his programs have helped my shy one blossom, my energetic one find a place to channel that energy in a positive way, and my social one to be social in a safe and caring environment. 4 Dr. Thomas & Lisa Sweet Members since 1997 Religious & Hebrew School Offering classes for Kindergarten through tenth grade students, our dynamic Religious School brings Judaism to life by engaging students in stimulating classroom activities, art, music, and drama. We are especially excited about new camp-style 3rd - 6th grade Sunday program. Our teaching staff creates opportunities beyond book learning which enriches the curriculum and fosters class community. Our curriculum explores the Jewish Holidays, Bible stories, Jewish values and ethics, life cycle, history and Israel. In third grade students begin a program to include Hebrew reading and prayer comprehension on either Tuesday or Wednesday afternoons. Our Pre-Confirmation and Confirmation programs are filled with topics that are both relevant and important for today s teens. Youth Programs The Temple Solel youth programs have been recognized as leaders in the Reform Movement for 7th - 12th grade students. Social connections are made through exciting, diverse and fun activities. Ongoing programs include: teen only Friday night Shabbat led by Kavannah (our youth band), social action & mitzvah projects, sports, discussion series and regional events with the North American Federation of Temple Youth (NFTY). Our youth lounge is open nearly every day during the school year for our teens to hang out, meet up with friends, play games, and listen to music or even study. Your children will develop life-long friendships through youth program involvement. Camp simcha Camp Simcha is a special place where children nurture friendships, develop self-confidence, strengthen their Jewish identities, and enjoy the beautiful outdoors. A full range of programs are offered from sports, arts & crafts, hiking, games, music, Oneg Shabbat and singing with Craig Parks. Camp Simcha has one of the best camper-to-counselor ratios in San Diego. Enroll early - this program sells out every year.

Alpert Mendelson Library Our Alpert Mendelson Library is the largest and finest Judaica library in Northern San Diego County. The collection is comprised of approximately 8,500 items for adults and children, including books, an extensive selection of DVD s, musical CD s, and audiobooks. We also host two stimulating book clubs, facilitated by our librarian. Our book clubs meet monthly and offer opportunities for discussing current books of Jewish interest in a social setting with people who share a love of reading. Gift Shop Beautiful selections of traditional and contemporary Judaica items, including menorahs, candlesticks, Kiddush cups, tallitot, mezuzot, challah and Seder plates, specialty holiday items and much, much more! The store also offers a wide variety of general gifts. Enjoy shopping for housewarming, baby naming, Brit, B nai Mitzvah and wedding presents, as well as teacher appreciation gifts and hostess gifts. Come visit the gift shop to meet all of your gift-giving needs and to find that special and unique Judaica item for which you have been searching. Celebrate Your Events Here Celebrate your next special occasion at Temple Solel. We know that a great deal of time and money goes into planning your event. Whether you are having a Bar or Bat Mitzvah party, a wedding, anniversary celebration, birthday or baby naming luncheon or dinner, we have everything you will need to make your event memorable and our prices are affordable. With the ability to seat 250 guests or as few as 10, we have a space that will work for you. Our state of the art Reform kosher kitchen will make it a pleasure to serve your guests a meal that is prepared by adhering to our standards of kashrut. A list of our preferred vendors is available for your planning needs. Cemetery Temple Solel has established a tradition of meeting the needs of our members from birth through the entire life cycle. The final act of burial is considered a special Mitzvah Shel Emet a Mitzvah of Truth. In this spirit, we are proud that Temple Solel has a section of cemetery spaces within El Camino Memorial Park in Sorrento Valley. These spaces are available to congregants, extended family members and friends of Temple Solel. Advance planning has biblical origins. Abraham secured a plot of land for burial long before owning a homeland. Advance commitment of cemetery property is a thoughtful, loving and considerate act; sparing survivors from making complicated business decisions at the time of emotional grief. We love shopping in the Gift Shop to see the wonderful array of Judaica and contemporary merchandise available for our home. It is an exciting store to purchase gifts for our family and friends. The Gift Shop is one of the best kept secrets at Temple Solel. Paula & Kenneth Marks Members since

Brotherhood Temple Solel s Brotherhood is an active contributor to our congregation s vitality. It s role is to help the men of the Temple grow personally while becoming involved in the Jewish community. Various programs include lectures, sports outings, Israel and other family activities. Brotherhood also contributes to the life of Temple Solel by supporting our High Holy Days and building the sukkah at Sukkot. Make Temple Solel s Brotherhood an important part of your life. Etanu Temple Solel also reaches out to college students through the Etanu program, which has grown into a multi-generational community of online learners. Etanu college students receive periodic care packages from Temple Solel, as well as the weekly Etanu blog. We are so excited to announce that we will be expanding the scope of Etanu by creating a podcast to go along with the blog. Stay tuned for more details and information! Temple Solel is very unique providing spiritual nourishment along with a vibrant social environment. For us, Temple Solel has always been a wonderful home full of warm and caring people. Richard & Rhona Gordon Members since 1980 Havurah The word Havurah comes from the word haver, meaning friend. A Havurah is a small group of individuals who gather together for a variety of reasons: to socialize, celebrate Jewish holidays, learn more about Judaism, participate in social action projects. The Havurah format allows congregants the opportunity to interact in an intimate setting and form lasting bonds by creating community. The Havurah is a family within the temple family. Most importantly, a Havurah provides an opportunity for you to meet others who share your values and interests. Havdalah Nights Havdalah Nights is a social group of Temple Solel members 45+ single or married, childless or with grown children who want to build a tighter bond with the Temple Solel community. We choose and plan our own social, cultural, religious and educational programs. We enjoy renewing old friendships as well as making new ones. 6

Hineynu The Hineynu Community is a network of Temple Solel members designed for in-reach to Temple members in need due to family crises such as critical illness, bereavement and major life changes. Hineynu provides supportive services such as hospital and home visitation, provision of meals and transportation. Hineynu encourages participation from all Temple Solel members in fulfilling the mitzvah of Gemilut Chasidim - acts of loving kindness. Adult Education Temple Solel values lifelong learning as a means of strengthening our Temple community and enriching the intellectual and spiritual lives of our members. We are exploring and creating new programs through technology as well as opportunities that include Torah study, Study with the Rabbi and other contemporary topics. We also offer an Adult B nai Mitzvah program which continues to be one of the most popular and well-attended courses. Let Temple Solel kindle your passion for Jewish study and learning. Sisterhood We encourage multigenerational participation. Sisterhood provides a collective identity for the women of Temple Solel. We come together in friendship for programs to benefit the Temple, the community, our families and ourselves. We seek opportunities to study Judaism and promote the growth of the individual so that each may find an opportunity to fulfill her potential as a person and as a Jewish woman. Social Action We are guided by the Jewish principle of Tikkun Olam, or to repair the world. Our congregants are concerned with a broad range of social justice issues from homelessness and hunger, to the needs of Jews around the world. Our Social Action Committee coordinates and provides volunteer assistance to synagogue and community-wide causes. We want and need your involvement. The success of our efforts depends on the participation of our Temple membership. We have been impressed with the variety of activities at Temple Solel such as the varied Shabbat services, Life Long Learning classes and the Social Action committee. I love singing in the choir during High Holy Days and throughout the rest of the year. We have found Temple Solel to be warm and spiritually nurturing which we are grateful to be a part of. 13 Legacy Circle One of the many ways that members of our congregation have chosen to express their deep commitment to our community is by naming Temple Solel in their will, in their trust, in another planned charitable gift, or by making an endowment donation. This is a way to make a lasting contribution that continues your Jewish legacy in perpetuity. If you have named Temple Solel in your will or trust, or if you have made another form of legacy gift to Temple Solel, we would like to acknowledge your generosity. Any amount of giving is greatly appreciated. Giving Opportunities Tree of Life Leaves A Tree of Life leaf can be ordered to commemorate any person or occasion. 14 Giving Opportunities All of Israel is responsible one for the other. Talmud Shevuot 39a Garden of Giving Live For Today, Honor Yesterday. From this central message, a circular pathway of granite tiles and pavers inscribed with the names of our children, families and loved ones permanently reside. The Temple Solel Garden, designed by artist Laurie Gross is an extension of our Sanctuary design of the glass shards bursting forth upon creation. The center of our garden features a circular arc vibrating out to its core edges signifying Solel and our pathway to Torah and holiness. Just as our ancestors planted for us, our Temple Solel Garden represents our commitment to pave the trail for future generations. The Garden of Giving presents opportunities at all levels with commemorative tile pavers. We invite you to consider how you and your family can make your mark on Temple Solel s future. Your gift will ensure that the legacy, which has been gifted to us, will be carried forward to future generations. Just as our ancestors built for us, now it is our turn.
