7 Chapter 1 Genesis As God laid the foundation for Christ s coming in the fullness of time (Galatians 4), He prepared a nation for Christ to come through. It all began in Genesis ( beginning ). Genesis begins with creation but ends with a coffin. In this book, we see the beginning of creation (before the fall) and the beginning of redemption (atfter the fall). Divided into two parts, Genesis 1-11 shows the creation and corruption of the nations in general (1-6,creation & fall; flood in ch. 7-9; curse at Babel in ch.10-11). Chapters 12-50, God chooses a particular nation to prepare Christ s coming. Abraham is the beginning of the nation (ch )...continues in his son, Isaac (25-27), Isaac s son, Jacob (28-36), and persevered through Joseph (37-50). Jacob s family goes to Egypt, where Exodus picks up.

9 Chapter 2 Exodus In this sequel to the book of Genesis, Exodus means, going out. We find God s chosen nation now a captive nation and in great need of deliverance and redemption. God did want His chosen nation to go to Egypt (Genesis 26:2) but told Jacob (Genesis 46:3) not to be afraid to go down to Egypt. In God s providence, we find the Scriptures saying in Hosea 11:1 and Matthew 2:15 that God would call His own Son out of Egypt. Exodus can be divided into two parts: Redemption of the nation (ch. s 1-18) and Revelation for the nation (ch. s 19-40). Jesus is seen in this book as the Better Moses.

11 Chapter 3 Leviticus God s chosen nation has now been delivered. In Leviticus they were to be made holy (sanctified). They were created and chosen in Genesis. Saved in Exodus (right with God - pardon ). Purified in Leviticus (like God - purity ). Leviticus can be divided into two parts: (1) the way to God, the Holy One (ch. s1-10) - oblation (sacrifice) and mediation (priesthood) - (2) the walk of holiness (ch. s 11-27) - separation (purity of the body) and sanctification (purity of the soul). These two divisions can be summed up in one word, worship. You shall be holy; for I the LORD your God am holy is the verse driving the book of Leviticus.

13 Chapter 4 Numbers Numbers is full of action. Leviticus showed the nation worshiping God in sacrifice. Numbers shows the nation worshiping God in their walk. However, their walk is definitely with a limp. God s directions are clear to Israel (ch. s1-10) Israel s discontent with how God provides (ch. s 11-12) Israel disbelieves His promises (ch. s 13-14) God disciplines Israel (ch. s 15-36) Israel (old generation) wanders, complains, & are numbered (ch. s 15-26) Israel (new generation) is prepared (ch. s 27-36) to enter promised land

15 Deuteronomy Deuteronomy is a great teaching book. One could say it serves as a commentary on the first four books of the Old Testament. Moses preaches several times explaining the law in this book. He is giving regulations to Israel so they will be able to rest in the next book, Joshua. Remembering God and loving him is a big idea in Deuteronomy. Chapters 1-4, Moses looks in backwards at the historical life of Israel, inward at their legal life (ch. s 5-26), and forward to their prophetical life (ch. s

18 Jesus is the true and better... Jesus is the true and better Adam who passed the test in the garden and whose obedience is [given] to us. Jesus is the true and better Abel who though innocently slain has blood that cries out for our acquittal not our condemnation. Jesus as the true and better Abraham who answered the call of God to leave all the comfortable and familiar and go into the void not knowing whither he went. Jesus is the true and better Isaac, who is not just offered up by his Father, although they never lifted a stone to accomplish it themselves. Jesus is the true better Esther who didn t just risk losing an earthly palace but lost the ultimate heavenly palace and who didn t just risk his life but gave his life to save his people. Jesus is the true and better Jonah who was cast into the storm so that we could be brought in. Jesus is the ultimate lamb, the ultimate priest, the ultimate king (Sinclair Ferguson) but actually sacrificed by his Father. Jesus is the true and better Jacob who wrestled and took the blow of justice we deserve so that we like Jacob only receive the wounds of grace to wake us up and discipline us. Jesus is the true and better Joseph who at the right hand of the king forgives those who betray him and sold him and uses his new power to save us. Jesus is the true and better Moses who stands in the gap between the people and the Lord and who mediates a new covenant. Jesus is the true and better rock of Moses, who struck with the rod of God s justice now gives us water in the desert. Jesus is the true and better Job, the truly innocent sufferer who then intercedes for and saves his stupid friends.
