KEY POINTS 1 Why do we read the Old Testament? 2 The history of the Old Testament 3 General look at the books of the Old Testament 4 Prophecy 5 The compilation of the Old Testament books 6 The original language of the Old Testament 7 Conclusions
1. WHY DO WE READ THE OLD TESTAMENT? A) We read the Old Testament because it is the Word of God; inspired by the Holy Spirit: B) The history of the chosen people refers us to the history of Salvation. This reveals to us the dealings with God and His promises. C) The prophecies about the Lord Jesus our Savior. The Old Testament contains complete prophecies about the Lord Jesus in all aspects. For Example:
PROPHECY FULFILLED Presentation
2. THE HISTORY OF THE OLD TESTAMENT The first period: From Creation to the entry into Egypt The second period: From Exodus to Judges The third period: The era of the kingdom of Israel The fourth period: The split of the kingdoms The fifth period: The Babylonian exile and the return from it The sixth period: The era of successive emperors.
HIGHLIGHTS BEFORE MOSES: Many consider Adam, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob as the first prophets since God declared to them His promise of Salvation to comfort them. MOSES THE PROPHET: He was the first individual to be a prophet and leader at the same time. He freed the Hebrews from slavery in Egypt which is symbolic to our freedom which we achieved through the cross.
TIMELINE THE FIRST PROPHETS: They appeared first in the time of Samuel (the last Judge and first prophet). Then came Elijah and Elisha the prophets. THE LATER PROPHETS: They are the "large" and "small" prophets (according to the size of the prophecy, not the importance). They gave attention to: the prophecy about the exile as a disciplinary action from God, coming back from the exile, and the salvation of the Lord Christ.
MAJOR AND MINOR PROPHETS 1. Isaiah 2. Jeremiah 3. Lamentations 4. Ezekiel 5. Daniel 1. Hosea 2. Joel 3. Amos 4. Obadiah 5. Jonah 6. Micah 7. Nahum 8. Habakkuk 9. Zephaniah 10.Haggai 11.Zechariah 12.Malachi
3. GENERAL LOOK AT THE BOOKS OF THE OLD TESTAMENT PENTATEUCH-FIVE BOOKS 1. Genesis 2. Exodus 3. Leviticus 4. Numbers 5. Deuteronomy
Written By When Moses 1400 B.C. Genesis answers two big questions: How did God s relationship with the world begin? and Where did the nation of Israel come from? Author: Traditionally Moses, but the stories are much older. Fun fact: Most of the famous Bible stories you ve heard about are probably found in the book of Genesis. This is where the stories of Adam and Eve, Cain and Abel, Noah and the Ark, the Tower of Babel, Abraham and Isaac, Jacob s ladder, and Joseph s coat of many colors are recorded.
Written By When Moses 1400 B.C. The enslavement of Israel God saves Israel from slavery in Egypt, and then enters into a special relationship with them. Israel s history on the way to Canaan under the leadership of Moses. Author:Traditionally Moses
Written By When Moses 1400 B.C. The book of laws concerning morality, cleanliness, food, etc. It teaches access to God through sacrifices. God gives Israel instructions for how to worship Him. Author: traditionally Moses
Written By When Moses 1400 B.C. Israel fails to trust and obey God, and wanders in the wilderness for 40 years. Author:Traditionally Moses
Written By When Moses 1400 B.C. Moses gives Israel instructions (in some ways, a recap of the laws in Exodus Numbers) for how to love and obey God in the Promised Land. A repetition of the laws given shortly before Israel entered Canaan.
