Pentateuch Genesis Instructions: The questions that follow will help you directly connect the Bible with what you are learning. Some of the events, characters, themes, or ideas may already be familiar to you. Feel free either to move quickly or spend time lingering on these passages. These questions will help you bridge the gap between what is actually in the Bible and the methods you are using to remember them. 1. In Genesis, God spoke the word. The world was made Read Genesis 1:1-2:3. What did God speak into existence on each day of creation? Briefly summarize in a list: The first day (1:3-5): The second day (1:6-8): The third day (1:9-13): The fourth day (1:14-19): The fifth day (1:20-23): The sixth day (1:24-31): The seventh day (2:1-3): 2. And the Fall occurred Read Genesis 3. What was the Fall according to Genesis 3? What happened to Adam and Eve? 3. Years of sin then the rain was heard, but Noah was protected Read Genesis 6. Why did the Flood occur?
4. The promise came, Abraham believed Read Genesis 12:1-3; 15:1-20; 17:1-8; 22: What did God promise to Abraham? Make a list. 5. Isaac and Jacob the promise received Read Genesis 26:1-5; 28: What did God promise Isaac and Jacob? 6. Joseph was sold but his brothers reprieved. Read Genesis 37. Who sold Joseph and why did they sell him? Read Genesis 45. Once Joseph was raised to a powerful position in Egypt, how did he choose to treat his brothers? 7. And we end the book in Egypt Read the end of Genesis, 50:22-26, and compare it to Exodus 1:1-14. What happened between the end of Genesis and the beginning of Exodus? 8. These are the generations Look up 5:1; 6:9; 9:12; 10:1; 11:10; 11:27; 17:7; 17:9; 17:12; 25:12; 25:19; 36:1; 36:9; 37:2. How is the word generations being used in the book? This is Genesis
Exodus 1. In Exodus, out of Egypt they came Read Exodus 3 and 12: Look up the word exodus in a dictionary. Why is this book called Exodus? 2. The plagues displayed God s mighty name Look up the following verses and make a list of the ten plagues of Egypt. Plague 1 (7:20): Plague 2 (8:6): Plague 3 (8:17): Plague 4 (8:24): Plague 5 (9:6): Plague 6 (9:10): Plague 7 (9:23): Plague 8 (10:13): Plague 9 (10:22): Plague 10 (12:29): 3. They crossed the sea Read Exodus 13:17-14:31. Which sea did they cross? Why did God make a way for them to cross the sea? 4. And a song they sang Read Exodus 15:1-21. Who sang the song? What is the song about? 5. And then they faced a desert Read Exodus 15: This is the first test of the people of Israel in the wilderness. How did the people respond to their first test? 6. The first commandment (20:2-3): The second commandment (20:4-6): The third commandment (20:7): The fourth commandment (20:8-11): The fifth commandment (20:12): The sixth commandment (20:13): The seventh commandment (20:14): The eighth commandment (20:15): The ninth commandment (20:16): The tenth commandment (20:17): 8. But they made a calf and shouted demands Read Exodus 32. Why did the people build a golden calf? What happened after Moses came down the mountain and saw what the people were doing? 9. Moses prayed, God stayed his hand Read Exodus 32:30-34 and 33: Why did Moses pray? How did God respond to Moses prayer? 10. And they built a tabernacle Read Exodus 35:30-36:7 for a small part of the tabernacle section. This section mentions two workmen, Bezalel and Oholiab, who worked on the tabernacle. With what did God fill these workmen? (Note especially verses 35:31; 35:35; 36:2.) 11. Redemption out of bondage God redeemed his people in more than one way in Exodus. (If you re uncertain about the meaning of the word redeemed, look it up in a dictionary.) How did God redeem his people in the book of Exodus? This is Exodus
Leviticus 1. In Leviticus, for their sins they bring, the burnt, the grain, the peace offering, the guilt and the sin offering Read Leviticus 1 for a description of the burnt offering (one of five offerings described in the first seven chapters of Leviticus). If someone were to ask you to describe these chapters to them, how would you describe them? 2. And the Day of Atonement Read Leviticus 16. What occurred each year on the Day of Atonement? (If you aren t familiar with the word atonement, look it up in a dictionary.) 3. Some foods are clean; others do not eat Look at Leviticus 11 and 17. List a few examples of unclean animals, that is, animals that could not be eaten by God s holy people. List also a few examples of clean animals, that is, animals that they were permitted to eat. (You do not have to list all of them just a few examples.) 4. Many other laws you ve got to keep Leviticus is full of various civil, ceremonial, and moral laws that were necessary for resolving civil disputes, for worship, and for generally walking rightly with God. Look at Leviticus 13:1-6; 17:10-12; 19:1-4; 19:17-19; 19:35-37; 25:35-38 for a few examples of the laws found throughout Leviticus. (There is no question for this line.)
5. Feasts and Sabbaths and the Jubilee Read Leviticus 23. Make a list of the feasts and sacred days included in this chapter. Read Leviticus 25. What was the Sabbath year? What was the year of Jubilee? 6. Some promises and warnings Read Leviticus 26. What kinds of things did God say would happen if they kept the covenant? What did he say would happen if they disobeyed the covenant? (Again, you do not have to list everything, just write down a few examples.) 7. Purity and holiness Read Leviticus 11: These verses express a central idea in Leviticus. Why did God want his chosen people, the people of Israel, to be pure and holy? This is Leviticus
Numbers 1. In Numbers, tribes and people to count Read Numbers 1:1-19. The book is named after the censuses that appear in this book (though In the Wilderness, which is the title found in the Hebrew Bible, might be a more descriptive title). Who did the Lord say should be included in the census? 2. Various laws, quite a large amount There are numerous laws relating to the affairs of everyday life sprinkled throughout Numbers. Look at Numbers 5:5-10; 8:23-26; 15:37-41; 19:11-13 for a few examples. How would you describe these laws? 3. Everyone complains What did the people complain about in each of the following passages? Numbers 11:4-6: Numbers 12:1-2: Numbers 14:1-4: Numbers 16:1-3: Numbers 20:2-5: Numbers 21:5: 4. And the spies recount the hopelessness of conquest Read Numbers 13:1-14:10. This is the turning point in the book. What happened when the spies returned from scoping out the land?
5. Forty years in the desert sand. Fightings and plagues til they couldn t stand. Never inside the promised land til all but two had perished Read Numbers 14: What judgment did God pronounce on that generation as a result of their rebellion after the spies brought a bad report? Also, who were the only two who were permitted to enter the Promised Land? 6. Grumblings and wanderings These are the two main themes of Numbers, centering upon the complaining and the wandering in the desert. How do you think things might have been different if they had not complained against the Lord? This is Numbers
Deuteronomy 1. In Deuteronomy, Moses speaks Look at Deuteronomy 1:1-5; 4:44-46; 5:1; 27:1; 27:9-11; 29:1-2. What was happening in Deuteronomy? 2. Of the promised land he gets a peek Read Deut 32:48-52; 34:1-4. Was Moses permitted to experience the Promised Land? Why or why not? 3. To show the contract is all he seeks. The covenant with Yahweh Read Deuteronomy 4-6. The central idea of Deuteronomy is a retelling of the covenant (thus the name Deuteronomy which means second law ). What are the main elements of the covenant that God made with Israel?
4. Love the Lord with all your heart. Truth and justice shall not depart. Teach your children, these things impart Be able to recognize Deuteronomy 6:4-5, Hear, O Israel! The Lord is our God, the Lord is one! And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. 1 Be able to recognize Deuteronomy 6:6-7, And these words, which I am commanding you today, shall be on your heart; and you shall teach them diligently to your sons and shall talk of them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way and when you lie down and when you rise up. Read Deuteronomy 10:17-19; 16:18-20; 24: How would you describe God s attitude toward injustice? 5. For blessings in the land Read Deuteronomy 28. Briefly describe what will happen if the children of Israel keep the covenant and what will happen if they break the covenant. 6. Will you keep the covenant? Deuteronomy is the renewal of the covenant between God and his people. (There is no question on this line.) This is Deuteronomy 1 All Scripture citations are taken from the New American Standard Bible (La Habra, CA: The Lockman Foundation, 1995 update.) Used by permission.
