21 Read the story and answer the questions on the next page. The Ghost of the Succah It was Succot and all our friends and family were sitting with us in our succah. Suddenly I saw a golden apple. Where did the golden apple in the corner come from? It wasn t there before. That night I asked my father, mother and brother if they put the golden apple in the succah, but they said they didn t. This was very strange! The next night when we all sat down again in the succah, I saw another golden apple hanging in a different corner of the succah. Where did this apple come from? I asked. But again, everyone said they did not know. During the next four days of Succot, four more apples appeared in our succah and still no answer to where they came from. I then decided to play detective and waited all day long by my window to try to catch the ghost of the succah. The next day, at 2 o clock in the afternoon, I heard a noise from the succah. I ran outside and saw a little boy sitting on the ground and holding his knee. There was a golden apple on the grass next to him. Who are you and what are you doing in our succah? I asked. My name is Nir and my family came to live here a week ago. My father is a greengrocer and is very busy. He does not have the time to build us a succah so I took some apples from my father s store to hang in your succah. I helped Nir into the house and my mother cleaned the cut on his knee. I told her about Nir and the golden apples and we both decided to invite Nir and his family to our succah for the last night of Succot. That night our succah was full of guests. We had a wonderful dinner and Nir s mother made a delicious apple pie. 21
22 After reading the story, The Ghost of the Succah, answer the questions. 1. What did Maya see in the corner of the succah? 2. What did Maya decide to do after she found the six golden apples? 3. Why was Nir holding his knee? 4. What did Maya and her mother decide to do after they heard Nir s story? 5. What did Nir s mother bring to the succah? 22
