7 Read Something interesting to read A book as simple as ABC By Cynthia Pederson Long ago, before your greatgreat-grandparents were born, most children learned to read from a one-page book. This book was called a hornbook. People called it a hornbook because its only page was covered with horn. The horn came from a cow, sheep, or goat. The horn was sliced into a clear, thin sheet and hammered down over a piece of paper onto wood. The wood was shaped like a paddle so that children could hold it easily. This sheet of horn helped keep the page clean. Back then, paper was expensive and books were rare. Children were not allowed to touch any book except hornbooks and the family Bible. Many families didn t own any other books or have any libraries to visit. What was written on that one important hornbook page? Sometimes it was only the alphabet in big and small letters. Most of the time the page also had the Lord s Prayer and some syllables, like ab eb ib ob ub. Students had to say these syllables over and over. They had to learn them turned Can a book have only one page? The answer to this riddle is yes. around, too: ba, be, bi, bo, bu, ca, ce, ci... At the beginning of the alphabet there was almost always a cross. Some people say this way children were reminded that they needed God s help to learn. Others say it was a good-luck charm because knowing certain words could lead to trouble. Many hornbooks were covered with dark red leather and had pictures stamped on their back covers. Usually, the wooden handle had a hole in it so that the book could be tied with a string around the waist or neck. This string helped students keep track of their books and not drop or lose them. But some writings from that time tell about children using their hornbooks as bats and rackets to play a game like tennis or badminton. Few children today would trade their colourful alphabet books for a hornbook. But it is interesting to know that children long ago learned to read from a book that didn t even open. Make your own hornbook. Use a Psalm out of the Bible and copy it into your hornbook. 38

8 Why should all boys and girls learn to read? God s children read the Bible When boys and girls go to school, they learn to read. They learn to read books. There are many good books to read. There are thousands and thousands of them. And we want to read good books, because there is so much to learn. There is one book that everybody should read. That book is the Bible. The Bible is the most important of all the thousands and thousands of books. Why is the Bible such an important book? Well, it is God s book. It is the only book that God has written for us. It is the only book that tells us who we are, and what we are here on earth for. Without the Bible, we would not really understand anything at all! God began to have the Bible written long ago, in the time of Moses. Do you remember Moses? When he was a baby, his mother put him in a basket in the river, and the princess of Egypt found him. Moses became the great leader of God s people. This Moses was a man who loved God very much. He twice spent forty days alone with God, on a mountain. God used Moses to begin His book for us. God the Holy Spirit guided Moses, telling him just what to write. Moses wrote all about how God made heaven and earth, and how God made everything that is on the earth. He wrote about Adam and Eve, how wonderfully they were made, and how they disobeyed God. Moses wrote about God s people, the Israelites, how God made them His people, and took care of them. Afterwards God chose other men to write more. They told about a Saviour who was going to come. We call these men prophets. And then God chose still other men, some of them Jesus own disciples, to write how the Saviour had come and what He had done for us. The Bible is a big book. We cannot read it all in one day. We should read a little every day. Then we will learn all that God wants us to know about Him. The Bible is such a wonderful book, that we can read a little every day until we are very old, and we will always be learning still more about God. We will learn what a great God He is, and how we can live for Him. 39
