12 The Shofar The shofar is made from a ram s horn. One of the most important mitzvot is to hear the hundred sounds come from the shofar in the synagogue each day of Rosh Hashanah. There are three different kinds of shofar sounds: There is also a long Tekiah (Tekiah G dolah). The little shofar blew a long Tekiah and all of the words got stuck together! 25 Yom Kippur The Day of Judgemen Read the sentences in A and match up the continuing sentences in B. Then write the number of the sentences under the correct pictures. 1. I wanted to play basketball outside with Tal today. Did he go home? It s Yom Kippur, Daniel. All of the men are at the synagogue. Tal is there, too! He had his Bar Mitzvah last year, mother answered. Are they coming back for lunch? Are we all eating again together this afternoon? I asked. No, Daniel, Mom answered, Yom Kippur is a day of fasting. We do not eat or drink. We do not drive cars or watch TV. It is a day for thinking about the way we live. We need to think quietly about the good and bad things we do. But Mom, I m hungry! I said. Don t worry, Daniel, Mom said. There is food for you in the refrigerator. You don t have to fast. You are only 11 years old. We will all have a big meal together this evening when Yom Kippur is over. What kind of holiday is this? I thought to myself. No TV no radio no playing basketball no fun! 26
