3 Between You & Me IN CASE YOU HAVEN T NOTICED, MEMPHIS IS ON FIRE. IN A GOOD way. Downtown has never been more alive. Crosstown is the most positive place to be in the city. And, believe it or not, The Commercial Appeal named our own Temple Israel as one of the top four places to worship in Memphis. The other three are Bellevue Baptist, Hope Church, and St. Louis Church! How amazing - that on the buckle of the Bible Belt - a synagogue has been nominated by outsiders as the best place to experience worship. Memphis today is clearly not the Memphis of 50 or even 20 years ago, confirmed by research and remarkable new findings. Millennials across America were asked about Memphis, and the two words that came to mind were not Graceland or barbecue. Researchers kept hearing creativity and soul after interviewing thousands. The summary finding is that Memphis is viewed as a place where creativity and soul converge to create positive change. If you want to change the world, the new social media ad reads, come home to Memphis. For this year s panel on What Being Jewish Means To Me, I invited the greatest and newest additions to our academic community, Dr. Marjorie Hass, President of Rhodes College; Dr. Larry Hass, a Rhodes College philosophy professor and real magician, and Dr. Joseph Turek, the new Dean of the Business School at Christian Brothers University. All are members of Temple Israel and key components of the positive energy calling us to be here now. It all begins by making history on Rosh Hashanah Eve, September 9. We will introduce ONE congregational service at 7:30 pm for the first time! Don t miss the experience of a packed sanctuary and the feeling of praying as one community. 4 Truly an Honor RUDI SCHEIDT, SR. NAMED HONORARY PRESIDENT OF TEMPLE ISRAEL AT FRIDAY NIGHT SERVICES ON SEPTEMBER 7, Rudi Scheidt, Sr. will become only the seventh person in Temple Israel s 165 years to be named Honorary President of Temple Israel. A group of past Presidents came forward last year - most notably Billy Orgel, Nancy Robinson, Mark Halperin, and Paula Jacobson - proposing the designation of Rudi Scheidt as Honorary President. President Mark Fogelman presided over the Temple Israel Board of Trustees vote in May that was both unanimous and effusive. This history-making vote marked the first Honorary President in 25 years. It bordered on the emotional, Rabbi Greenstein remarked. One Trustee said she wished the award could be given to Rudi and Honey and emphasized that this esteemed honor encompasses both of them! UDI 4 VOICE HIGH HOLY DAYS 2018 Rudi fled Germany in the 1930s, became a Bar Mitzvah at Congregation Emanu-El in San Francisco, moved to Memphis in the 1950s, and served as a Temple Israel leader for six decades, including his role as Temple s President ( ). Together with Honey and the Scheidt Family, Rudi was instrumental in Temple s move to East Memphis in the 1970s, as well as the Gift for Generations renewal in 2006 and the 2014 Chazak Endowment Campaign. Along with transformative gifts to Temple Israel, Rudi and Honey also have played a pivotal role in the Union for Reform Judaism (URJ). Rudi was largely involved in the creation of the URJ s Henry S. Jacobs Camp, and Rudi and Honey established the Union for Reform Judaism s renowned Scheidt Seminar for incoming Temple Presidents across North America.

5 Rabbi Greenstein continued, The biggest part of Rudi, affectionately known as Pops, is his heart. One of my worries for the Jewish people and the greater world is the rarity of the Rudi and Honey Scheidts - people who are instinctively generous, naturally giving, and universally caring. Rudi is not only a world-class humanitarian, he is also a Memphis humanitarian a poster child for the art world, music world, Temple Israel, the Jewish community, and greater community. We hope with this honor, we can begin to show the immense gratitude we feel toward Rudi, Honey, and the entire Scheidt family. The Seven Honorary Presidents of Temple Israel The position of Honorary President of Temple Israel was created for Jacob Goldsmith in 1932 as a testimonial of the esteem in which the individual is held not only in our congregation, but in the entire community. Hardwig Peres received the second Honorary President designation. His efforts in the establishment of the Jewish State led to a forest being named in Israel in his honor, while locally, he helped create the John Gaston Hospital in Memphis and mentored young Abe Fortas before he became a Supreme Court Justice. Most of Temple s Honorary Presidents never presided over the congregation as President, including Temple s third Honorary President, Louis Barnett. Barnett served as a longtime Vice President who contributed and worked tirelessly for Temple Israel, and even headed the Membership Committee in the 1940s. Nothing was beneath him to help Temple s sacred cause. The fourth Honorary President, Joseph Lewis, was another Vice President whose financial acumen helped Temple with numerous business matters during challenging times. Temple s fifth Honorary President, Abe Plough, anonymously saved the congregation from financial hardships. He never wanted recognition and had to be coerced into becoming an Honorary President in 1972 to jumpstart a campaign that resulted in the present Temple Israel facility and 29 acre campus. Sam Cooper is the sixth Honorary President and the only other former President of Temple Israel, besides Rudi Scheidt. Cooper served as President from and worked closely with Abe Plough to build Temple Israel on East Massey in the early 1970s. After retiring from his business career, Cooper took over the chairmanship of the Endowment Committee. He became Honorary President of Temple Israel in a 1993 ceremony, during which then U.S. Secretary of Education Lamar Alexander was the keynote speaker. This esteemed group of Honorary Presidents exemplifies service, philanthropy, and a dedication to both the congregation and larger community. The past, present, and future generations of Temple Israel will always be grateful for their selflessness and dedication. For her Mitzvah Project, Hannah focused on reducing waste, living sustainably, and helping the environment by growing food and educating others about recycling and sustainable living. LILY HIRSCH Daughter of Marci & Geoffrey Hirsch, Lily became a Bat Mitzvah on August 18. She is a seventh grader at Maxine Smith STEAM Academy and the granddaughter of Roz & Charles Clark, Judi Margolin, and Richard Margolin. For her Mitzvah Project, Lily is raising money for Heifer International by selling personalized cups, with the goal to collect enough money to donate a cow to support a family in need. ETHAN EVANS Son of Jackie & Alex Evans, Ethan will become a Bar Mitzvah on August 25. 13 SIMCHAT TORAH CELEBRATION Sunday, September 30 5:00 pm Simchat Torah Learning and Nosh 6:00 pm Music and Midrash: A Simchat Torah Service YIZKOR MEMORIAL SERVICE Monday, October 1 9:00 am We will read the names and remember loved ones who have died since last Simchat Torah. TOT FAMILY SERVICE For children in first grade and younger with their grown-ups, this service will engage our children through music, stories, and prayers. HIGH HOLY DAYS CAMP Kids (2 nd - 5 th grades) will participate in games and other holiday activities. PRAY WITH YOUR KIDS 2 nd - 7 th grades may attend either the Main Sanctuary service or the TI Chai service with their grown-ups. SCOUTS CAMPOUT Celebrate Sukkot in the outdoors and experience Shabbat in a unique way! More information will be provided closer to the date. TASHLICH & HAVDALAH It is a Jewish tradition to cast off our sins and faults so that we can enter the New Year with a clean slate. Reflect, make resolutions, and actively participate in casting off the mistakes of last year. The evening will end with a short Havdalah service. KEVER AVOT An honored Jewish custom, Kever Avot entails visiting the cemetery between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur to symbolically bring our deceased family members with us into the Jewish New Year. 14 What influenced you to join the Temple Israel Board of Trustees? After seeing firsthand how our congregation enriches lives, builds community, and deepens faith, I felt an overwhelming need to give back to Temple. Temple s incredible gift really spoke to me once Margo and I had a family of our own. I wanted to play a part in ensuring that Temple s great work would continue for generations to come. MARK Meet Mark Fogelman O 56 TH PRESIDENT OF TEMPLE ISRAEL ON APRIL 27, 2018, TEMPLE ISRAEL INSTALLED ITS 56 TH PRESIDENT, Mark Fogelman. A lifelong Memphian and child of this synagogue, Mark grew up in the religious school, became a Bar Mitzvah on the Temple bimah, joined the Board of Trustees thirteen years ago, and now, with his wife Margo, celebrates his own children s Jewish milestones at Temple. Just in the last year, his son, Matt and daughter, Alexa marked their Graduation and Confirmation respectively on the same Temple bimah. And this month, Mark s younger son Josh started Kindergarten in the Barbara K. Lipman Early Learning Center. We sat down with Mark to learn more about our 56 th president, his connection to the synagogue, and what he hopes to achieve during his tenure. And what encouraged you to stay on the Board to become President? Since becoming a Trustee, my connection to Temple Israel strengthened as I witnessed our synagogue s amazing work, benefitting so many, much of it beyond public view. From 1854 to today, Temple s sustainability and relevance in the daily lives of Reform Jews in Memphis and the greater Mid-South community are due to the contributions and dedication of our past leaders and clergy. I ve been lucky enough to partner with Temple clergy and staff to see Temple s mission and purpose realized to be a source of strength and a force for good, and I feel so fortunate and humbled by the opportunity to be president. With our membership and Jewish community demographics constantly changing, we need to concentrate on solidifying Temple s sustainability, both financially and organizationally. 14 VOICE HIGH HOLY DAYS 2018 TIMEMPHIS.ORG 14

Temple Cares offers caring support and assists Temple s members in countless ways: Making in-home, assisted living, and nursing home visits Providing transportation to doctor s appointments and Shabbat services Taking lunch to the hospital ICU for patients families Offering meals to members following hospital stays and to members in need What do you hope to achieve during your term? I plan to focus on two main areas: sustainability and inclusion. With our membership and Jewish community demographics constantly changing, we need to concentrate on solidifying Temple s sustainability, both financially and organizationally. Great progress has already been achieved, but we must continue to carry on this work. As for inclusion, we want each of our 1,400+ Temple families to continue to feel connected to our synagogue, and we must offer outlets for that connection. Though there may be differences, as Reform Jews we share so much through our heritage and emphasis on tzedakah, family, and community. We must never overlook the common themes that connect us all. What is your favorite Temple memory? Growing up in Barbara Mansberg s religious school. She always kept the program fun and interesting, but of course, she ran a very tight ship. I am thankful for Mrs. Mansberg s patience on those Sunday mornings! What s one thing you want to share with the congregation? I am so fortunate to be married to my best friend and beautiful wife of 23 years, Margo Cohen Fogelman. She grew up outside Chicago and moved to Memphis in 1994, shortly after we became engaged. Margo and I have been blessed with three incredible children: Matt (18), Alexa (16), and Josh (5). When Josh graduates in 2031, Margo and I may hold the record for the longest, continuous streak of having a child in a Temple youth program 31 years! 18 For more than a year, Murray spent countless hours photographing our cemetery. He took more than 12,000 images in the summer, fall, winter, and spring; during the day and night, at dawn and at dusk; in the sun, the rain, and even the snow. Beloved, the single word most often used on the cemetery s gravesites, offers an amazing view of our cemetery before now unknown to those who visit. ELOVED IN JUDAISM, A CEMETERY IS AS MUCH FOR THE LIVING AS IT IS FOR the dead. Yet, most people seldom go to a cemetery other than to bury a loved one or to visit a loved one s grave. For that reason, the Temple Israel Museum commissioned the creation of a unique photographic exhibit of the Temple Israel Cemetery. Through the keen and artistic eye of Murray Riss, Memphis leading photographer, this unforgettable exhibit entitled Beloved, brings the Temple Israel Cemetery into the Temple Israel Museum so that everyone can experience the solemnity and beauty of this sacred ground. Beloved is designed to be a rotating exhibit. Of the 12,000 images, only 86 were selected for inclusion with 45 to be on display at a time. Since its creation 172 years ago by one of Memphis earliest Jewish settlers, Temple Israel s cemetery has become a permanent place of beauty. It stands as a testament to the love of memory, and an everlasting tribute to the history of the Memphis Jewish community and to the City of Memphis as well. Judaism s early rabbis referred to a cemetery as a house of the living. Beloved promises to show you why. Beloved will open in the Temple Israel Museum on Friday, September 7. Lisa fondly recalled her favorite Temple moments, reading from the Torah for the first time and getting chills as I touched the yad; watching happy little faces singing Shabbat prayers and eating challah, and attending Musical Shabbats, especially when my brother plays in the band, and my parents, sister-in-law, and nephew are all together with my family. Justin also stressed his appreciation for the peace, love, and open arms Temple offers. Our top-notch clergy team and unparalleled staff work tirelessly to make Temple a beloved spiritual home, Lisa continued. They inspire us to be the best versions of ourselves, and we are beyond grateful. And, we are all grateful for you: Lisa, Justin, Maddie, and Blake. 25 Summer in the Barbara K. Lipman Early Learning Center The kids in the Barbara K. Lipman Early Learning Center had the greatest summer ever - full of water play and new adventures each week! Through the camp s weekly themes and awesome programming, the preschoolers visited several community spots, including the river, the zoo, the grocery store, and the firehouse. Each week brought fun and educational experiences that all the kids loved! Thanks to the teachers and staff who made this summer incredible. Temple Israel Movie Nights For the fifth year, Temple Israel hosted its annual Movie Nights throughout June. Featuring the films: Wendy s Shabbat, Lives Well Lived, Keep The Change, and Bombshell: The Hedy Lamarr Story, each evening left attendees entertained and inspired. Temple Israel kids also enjoyed a night out with their very own Movie Night - where pjs and sleeping bags were welcomed! Shoham Teens Visit Temple Israel This summer, Temple Israel families hosted six Israeli teens and Rabbi Rinat Safania from our sister congregation in Shoham, Israel. Spending ten days, from June 21 - July 2, the Temple Israel and Shoham teens explored their Jewish identities through exciting programs that took them everywhere from Facing History and Ourselves to Plough Towers to The National Civil Rights Museum to Henry S. Jacobs Camp. The amazing experience impacted all the teens and their families while leading to strong relationships that will surely continue for years to come. 32 Scout Report A AS ANNOUNCED EARLIER THIS YEAR, THE BOY SCOUTS of America officially opened its programming to all girls and boys! Temple Israel s Cub Scout Pack 25 is excited to support this progressive initiative and will start welcoming girls for the school year. Troop 25 (for older Scouts) will begin welcoming girls in Fall With 104 years in the Boy Scouts program, Temple Israel Cub Scout Pack 25 firmly believes each child can benefit from the Boy Scouts mission that focuses on preparing young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes. Temple Israel s Troop 25 is the oldest, continuous running troop in the State of Tennessee. In fact, Rabbi Fineshriber, the first clergyman in Memphis to speak out against the Ku Klux Klan, chaired this scouting unit, explained Rabbi Greenstein. Troop 25 and Pack 25 are the only Jewish-focused scouting programs in the Memphis area for both boys AND girls while serving as a meaningful and worthwhile facet of our total youth program. It is our hope that more and more Jewish families will take advantage of what scouting offers our children. Troop 25 s first event of the year was its annual Kick-off Cookout that immediately followed the first day of the Wendy & Avron Fogelman Religious School.
