A A A Thank you to those who serve as greeters at Shabbat services throughout the year. Be a greeter! Call Sylvia Appleton, Commemorate a joyous family occasion or honor a loved one by hosting an Oneg Shabbat after a service. Call Sharon Nickol, BETWEEN YOU AND ME Thanksgivukkah/Menorah-kah is just around the corner. It s only weeks until we all eat turkey and kindle the Chanukah lights on the same night! The early darkness and fall season seems a fitting time for reassessment, so here is an early gift from an anonymous source with penetrating insights about our human condition. I think they are all worth pondering. I ve learned that You cannot make someone love you. All you can do is be someone who can be loved. The rest is up to them. It s not what you have in your life, but who you have in your life that counts. You can get by on charm for about fifteen minutes. After that, you d better know something. It takes years to build up trust and only seconds to destroy it. No matter how much I care, some people just don t care back. We are responsible for what we do no matter how we feel. You can keep going long after you can t. Either you control your attitude or it controls you. Money is a lousy way of keeping score. Just because two people argue, it doesn t mean they don t love each other. And just because they don t argue doesn t mean they do. No matter how good a friend is, they re going to hurt you every once in a while, and you must forgive them for that. Rabbi Greenstein You should always leave loved ones with loving words. It may be the last time you see them. That s what our author has learned. The tough part is living what we learn. Temple s Take Root Adult Learning provides Jewish knowledge and wisdom for all of the above, so mark your calendars and attend the offerings happening this month and throughout the fall. Give yourself and those you love the Chanukah gift no money can buy so that your Jewish values live on. Faithfully yours, Rabbi Micah D. Greenstein RUACH Friday, November 8, 7:30 pm We will celebrate our Mitzvah Day experiences by praying and singing together at this Ruach Shabbat service. J. Simpson, Claus von Bülow, Bill Clinton, Julian Assange, Jeffrey MacDonald, Patty Hearst, Mike Tyson, and many more. But who has affected Dershowitz himself? Alan Dershowitz The attorney and author is now Taking the Stand in a new memoir and on 92Y s stage. Jeffrey Toobin, author (The Oath: The Obama White House and the Supreme Court), The New Yorker writer, and CNN analyst, interviews Dershowitz. Thane Rosenbaum, the John Whelan Distinguished Lecturer in Law at Fordham Law School and director of the Forum on Law, Culture & Society, will Jeffrey Toobin moderate. Sponsored by the Hohenberg-Scheidt Fund for Lifetime Learning THE JEWISH SHORT STORY Nov. 10, Nov. 17, Nov. 24, 9:15-10:15 am Deepen your Jewish identity through an understanding and association with Jewish perspectives in literature. Copies of the stories will be available in advance at the Welcome Center. LIVE FROM NY S 92ND STREET Y: ARI SHAVIT WITH DAVID REMNICK Tuesday, November 19 introduction at 7 pm; broadcast at 7:15 pm Haaretz senior correspondent Ari Shavit joins The New Yorker editor David Remnick for an incisive analysis of the Jewish state s fraught history and its prospects for the future. Shavit s new book, My Promised Land: The Triumph and Tragedy of Israel, is the sweeping result of his 30 years in the trenches of Israeli society and politics. Ari Shavit Ari Shavit is a leading Israeli columnist and writer. David Remnick, editor of The New Yorker since July 1998, is the author of several books, including King of the World: Muhammad Ali and the Rise of an American Hero, Resurrection: The Struggle for a New Russia, and Pulitzer Prize-winning Lenin s David Remnick Tomb: The Last Days of the Soviet Empire. Sponsored by the Hohenberg-Scheidt Fund for Lifetime Learning MEET THE MOTHERS AND FATHERS THEY NEVER TOLD YOU ABOUT Nov. 10, Nov. 17, Nov. 24, 11 am-12 pm The Bible is filled with fascinating characters, many whose names and stories we ve never heard. Dr. Joe Levy leads this class through the lesser-known stories in the Jewish tradition, exploring what we can learn from these characters and from one another. Please bring your Bible to these classes. (Note: these discussions will continue Jan. 26-April 20, 2014.) DISTANCE LEARNING IN THE BEIT MIDRASH Sunday, November 10, 9:15-10:15 am In our beautiful newly remodeled and renovated Beit Midrash, experience lifelong learning as no other congregation in the country is doing. Learn and interact with some of the brightest Jewish scholars in the country. These experiences are designed for Temple Israel members, their families, and their out-oftown guests only. Participate in a dialogue with Rabbi Michael Marmur, the Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel Provost of Hebrew Union College - Jewish Institute of Religion. In this session we will read an amazing and disturbing text that was published a century ago by the great scholar Rabbi Louis Ginzberg, who found it in a Yemenite manuscript. We know little about when and where it comes from. It tells an alternative version of the Adam and Eve story, one that has all kinds of implications for how we understand human nature and our Michael Marmur chances of building and maintaining our world. We will read and unpack the text (which is not for the faint-hearted) and discuss together the reasons why this story is unlikely ever to be told in religious school! Along the way we will think about how the ancient texts of our tradition can be of vital significance for the way we choose to live our lives. SACRED CONVERSATIONS: MEDICAL DECISIONS Tuesday, November 12, 7-8:30 pm When confronting issues of life and death, it is difficult for us to find the right words or even the courage to speak. But having conversations that connect us to one another and to God is one of the greatest gifts of being human. To build on Dr. Scott Morris talk on Yom Kippur about end-of-life decisions, Temple will offer a series of conversations about medical decisions and spiritual questions. We will focus on the medical decisions that individuals and families often are faced with during times of illness. We will use Five Wishes a living will that talks about personal, emotional, and spiritual needs as well as medical desires as a starting point for conversations with loved ones about Dr. Bill Weiss illness and end-of-life needs. Dr. Bill Weiss and will offer guidance about these medical decisions and advice for beginning these meaningful and sacred conversations with loved ones TIMEMPHIS.ORG FACEBOOK.COM/TEMPLEISRAEL

5 It s time to pile latkes beside our turkey, play dreidel as we watch football, and even light a menurkey! This year, Chanukah begins the night before Thanksgiving, a once-in-a-lifetime experience that (as internet sources say) will not happen again for thousands of years. For many of us, it may be hard to think about lighting a menorah before December has begun, but the overlap of Chanukah and Thanksgiving gives us the unique opportunity to blend our Jewish and American values, to celebrate our Jewish freedom as we give thanks for what we have. In the Wendy and Avron Fogelman Religious School, we will begin our Chanukah celebration in November not only by eating latkes and playing dreidel, but also by teaching our students the values of dedication, gratitude, and helping those in need. We will continue our annual mitzvah project of collecting holiday gifts for the students of Perea Preschool, which is associated with the Church Health Center. Our ninth grade students will take the lead in this project, but all our students and their families are invited to help make this a meaningful experience for themselves and the students at Perea Preschool. Chanukah and Thanksgiving also share the value of family. We celebrate both of these holidays at home with our loved ones and share the traditions that have been passed down through the generations. Because of the unique overlap of these holidays, I encourage you to take this opportunity for learning and growing as a family. At your Thanksgiving meal, share not only what you are thankful for, but also why you are thankful to be a Jewish person living in America. As you light each candle on the menorah, have the members of your family offer gratitude for something positive in their lives. Although the weather is getting colder and the days shorter, Chanukah and Thanksgiving bring light into our lives as we remind ourselves and our children to be thankful for what we have from our homes to our families to our religious freedom. So enjoy this Thanksgivukkah season we ll never see it again! L Shalom, Lauren Luskey, Director of Congregational Learning laurenl@timemphis.org Lauren Luskey FAMILY SHABBAT SERVICE AND DINNER Friday, November 8, 6:15 pm Giving families a space to pray together, welcome Shabbat, and build community is an important part of Temple Israel s vision.
