4 الخطوط العربية واللاتينية: خيوط تاريخية مشتركة Arabic and Latin Scripts: The Common Historical Thread اتباع ثم انتقال وتح ول Tradition, Transmission and Transformation فيما تتسم اللغات المحكية في طبيعتها با نها إلى زوال لا تزال اللغات المكتوبة سجلا لحفظ اللحظات العابرة ولا تزال الكتابة سجلا حافظ ا لا نساب الشعوب والحضارات ووعاء ناقلا لتقاليدهم وثقافاتهم في شتى بقاع الا رض. لقد كانت الكلمة المكتوبة خير معين للا نسان في نشر شعور بالانتظام في العالم كله وقد و ل دت أنظمة الكتابة من ر ح م الصور التوضيحية ثم الحروف الا بجدية ما م هد السبيل لا رساء دعاي م النظم التعليمية وانتشار الا ديان وازدهار الاقتصاد وتوثيق التاريخ وطرح السياسات وتدوين الا داب والقوانين والمعارف وتدريسها وتعزيز مكانتها. وم رت نظم الكتابة العربية واللاتينية منذ نشا تها بتقلبات عديدة فرضتها تغيرات ثقافية وخلفتها الغزوات والفتوحات والحروب. ونتناول في هذا الفصل نبذه عن اشتقاق نظام ي الكتابة كليهما وما مرت به حروف هما الا بجدية من تحولات ويستعرض أمثلة لحالات من التواصل ثناي ي اللغة في التاريخ بوصفها دليلا على مرونة اللغة وصمودها في وجه مختلف التحديات والا حوال السياسية والثقافية والاجتماعية. While spoken languages are ephemeral in nature, written languages record and preserve eeting moments. Moreover, writing is a means of recording and passing on the genealogical, traditional, and cultural knowledge of indigenous peoples and civilizations of various places. The written word has enabled human beings to create a sense of order of the world. Writing systems evolved from pictograms to alphabets, thereby allowing education systems to be put in place, religions to spread, economies to ourish, history to be documented, politics to be introduced, and literature, laws, and sciences to be transcribed, taught and sustained. As a result of cultural changes arising from invasions, conquests and wars, Arabic and Latin writing systems have undergone many vicissitudes since their inception. This chapter presents a synopsis on the derivation of both writing systems and the permutation of their alphabets. 5 تتكون الا بجدية اللاتينية من ٢٦ حرف ا وهي الا بجدية المو حدة للغة الا نجليزية التي ت عد لغة عالمية اليوم. وتنحدر الا بجدية اللاتينية أو الا بجدية الرومانية من الخط الا تر ور ي الذي انتشر في شبه الجزيرة الا يطالية نحو القرن السابع قبل الميلاد. ونشا ت في الا صل من الا بجدية الا تر ور ي ة والخطوط اليونانية القديمة والا بجدية الفينيقية التي انتشرت في جبيل اللبنانية وكانت تتا لف من ٢٢ حرف ا صامت ا. وت قرأ الا بجدية اللاتينية من اليسار إلى اليمين وقد تط ورت فشم لت حروف ا صغيرة ك تبت متصلة فضلا عن حروف صغيرة كانت أشبه بحروف الخط الرقيق التي ع رفت بالحروف المربعة الرومانية. وفي وقت لاحق تغيرت القيم الصوتية لبعض الحروف وسقط بعضها وأ ضيفت حروف أخرى ثم ظهر غيرها في العصور الوسطى حتى استقرت الا بجدية اللاتينية بحروفها ال ٢٦ على ما نراه اليوم. الخط العرب ي س ام ي. وينحدر على غرار الخط اللاتيني من الا بجدية الفينيقية ولكن مرور ا بالخط الا رامي في القرن الثامن قبل الميلاد والخط السرياني في القرن الا ول الميلادي تقريب ا في المنطقة التي ت عرف الا ن باسم المشرق العربي. وقد أعادت هذه الخطوط رسم بعض حروف الا بجدية لتمثل الصواي ت الطويلة. وم ن العلماء م ن يرى أن الخط العربي تا ثر بالخط النبطي الذي ارتبط بالخط الا رامي وساد بين القرن الثاني قبل الميلاد والقرن الرابع الميلادي في المنطقة التي تعرف الا ن باسم البترا في الا ردن. وتطور الخط العربي ليشمل ٢٨ حرف ا (بخلاف لا و ء ) وتغيرت صورها وأشكالها تبع ا لموقعها في الكلمة سواء جاءت في أولها أم في وسطها أم في آخرها أم منفصلة عنها وكثير ا ما ت سمى اللغة العربية بلغة الضاد ض لانفرادها ع ما سواها من اللغات بحرف الضاد. وفيما ظهر الا سلام في القرن السابع الميلادي باللغة العربية حظيت اللغة العربية بمكانتها الدينية المقدسة وتط ورت حروفها وزخرت بتعدد صورها المن مقة وأساليبها المح سنة. The Latin alphabet, comprising 26 letters, is the standard alphabet of the English language; today s lingua franca. The Latin alphabet, or Roman alphabet, developed from the Etruscan script in the Italian Peninsula around 7th century BCE. It intrinsically originated from the Etruscan alphabet, the ancient Greek scripts, and the Phoenician alphabet of 22 consonants in Byblos, Lebanon. The Latin alphabet reads from left to right, and evolved to include along with the uppercase serif-like letters, known as roman square capitals the cursive lowercase letters. Later, the phonetic values of some letters have altered and other letters have dropped, added and created in the medieval age to form the 26 letters of today s Latin alphabet. The Arabic script is Semitic. Similar to Latin, it is also originated from the Phoenician alphabet but via the Aramaic script from the 8th century BCE and the Syriac script from approximately the 1st century CE in the area that is now known as the Levant. These scripts reformed certain letters in the alphabet to represent long vowels. Some scholars think that the Arabic script was influenced by the Nabatean script, which is related to Aramaic, and was prevalent in the area now known as Petra in Jordan, between the 2nd century BCE and 4th century CE. The Arabic script evolved to comprise 28 letters (excluding Lam-Aleph and Hamza), with characters changing their form according to their position in the word as initial, medial, final, or isolated (Fig. 1.1). Arabic is often known as the language of dad ض due to its unique dad letter that does not exist in any other languages. With the rise of Islam in the 7th century CE, and as Arabic became the sacred script of the religion, Arabic letters developed to create a rich repository of refined forms and styles.

The Arabic script inherited letters with no diacritics. However, the lexicographer Al Kahlil bin Ahmed Al Farahidi introduced, to consonant letterforms, the system of diacritics of dots and vocalization marks (tashkil) in the 9th century CE. This was done to represent short vowels and consonant accentuates. In non Arab countries such as Afghanistan, Iran, India, Pakistan and China, which adopted Arabic scripts, additional dots and/or extra letters were introduced to represent the phonemes of the spoken language of each country that do not exist in Arabic phonology, for instance in Persian, Urdu, Malay, Kashmiri, and more. The historical lineage of Arabic and Latin reveals ñ despite their common Phoenician roots ñ that each system has undergone different journeys, and has evolved and in uenced many other languages across the continents. 11 نقطة التحول: الانتقال من الخط باليد إلى النصوص المطبوعة The turning point: Moving from hand-written to printed text يرجع الفضل إلى يوهانس غوتنبرغ في ابتكار الخطوط الطباعية الميكانيكية المتحركة في عام ١٤٥٠ في ألمانيا ثم انتشرت في جميع أنحاء أوروبا والعالم لكنها لم تصل إلى الشرق الا وسط إلا في أواخر القرن السابع عشر وبدايات القرن الثامن عشر الميلاديين وكان هذا الابتكار نقطة تح ول في تاريخ العالم. وفيما عكف الغرب على نشر المو لفات وابتكار الخطوط وتطوير التيبوغرافيا انشغل الشرق بصقل أنماط الخط اليدوي. ورغم ذلك فقد شهد القرن السادس عشر الميلادي طباعة مو لفات عربية عديدة في أوروبا وكانت في أغلبها مو لفات دينية. Johannes Gutenberg's movable metal type printing emerged in 1450 in Germany, and spread across Europe and other parts of the world, but was not present in the Middle East until the late 17th, and early 18th centuries. This was an invention that transformed the world. While the West was publishing books, creating typefaces and advancing typography, the East was still refining calligraphy. 12 قوة اللغات المتعددة التكنولوجيا في هذا اليوم مذهلة فهي تم كنك من ترجمة كلمة في غضون ثوان معدودة بالتقاط صورة لها كما تسمح لك أيض ا بالعثور على البيانات المدونة على السلع بلغات متعددة. وأصبحت الخطوط العربية واللاتينية تشترك في سياق واحد في عصرنا هذا أكثر من ذي قبل. وما أحوج ها إلى هذا بطرق أش د تعقيد ا تسترعي اهتمام نا! فلم يبدو إذ ا البعض م ستاي ين من الثناي ية اللغوية في الواقع إن ظاهرة الثناي ية اللغوية ليست مستحدثة فما أكثر الا مثلة التاريخية التي نرى فيها نقوش ا بلغتين أو نصوص ا كاملة بلغتين وكانت أداة قوية لولاها ما ح ف ظت اللغة ولا انتشرت. وقد لا يختلف الا مر في الحاضر عن الماضي أي يجب أن تظل اللغة مرنة ومنفتحة لكي تبقى حية تمثل شعبها وسياقها في العالم الحالي. أنماط من كتابات تاريخية متعددة اللغات لا تزال هناك حاجة إلى التواصل بلغات متعددة في منطقة الشرق الا وسط وشمال أفريقيا نتيجة للتداخلات الثقافية وانتشار الا ديان وما جرى من تبادلات اقتصادية وتعليمية على مدى تاريخ هذه المنطقة الطويل وقد ترتب على هذا ضرورة استخدام خطوط عديدة في الوثاي ق ذاتها لنقل الرسالة المطلوبة إلى عدد أكبر من الم ت لقين وبد ت ظاهرة التعددية اللغوية واضحة في النصوص القديمة ثم في وثاي ق متعددة أوض ح ت استخدام نصوص متعددة ومنها العربية واللاتينية. The power of multiple languages Today s technology is fascinating; you pick up your mobile, scan a word and in a second the word on your screen is instantly translated to another language. Or you buy international goods whose packaging includes multilingual instructions. The world is at our fingertips and what is current today is subject to change tomorrow. Languages really are in flux. These days, more than ever before, Arabic and Latin scripts are sharing the same context and having to do so in interesting and more complex ways. Why, then, does bilingualism seem vexatious to some people? In fact, bilingualism is not a new phenomenon. Many historical examples feature bilingual inscriptions, or complete bilingual texts, which were powerful tools to preserve and spread language. This can be the same today; language must remain flexible and open in order to stay alive so it can still represent its people and their context in the current world. Patterns of historical multilingual writing As a result of cultural intersections, the spread of religions, the economic and educational exchanges that have taken place over the long history of the Middle East and North Africa, there has always been a need for multilingual communication in the region. This has necessitated the use of various scripts in single documents to convey the desired message to a wider audience.
