2 ARABIC 4626 Introduction to the Arabic Qur an Meeting Time/ Location: Instructor Office Hours Course Description This course provides student with an introduction to the tools and skill required for reading, understanding, and analyzing the Qur an in Arabic. Throughout the course, we use the corpus of qur anic Arabic to explore and gain competency in the qur anic lexicon and the fundamental concepts of Arabic pronunciation, morphology, syntax, and grammar as a foundation for broader Arabic proficiency. Course Goals Enriched familiarity with and appreciation of the Qur an in Arabic Increased proficiency in fundamentals of Arabic grammar Ability to read and understand the Qur an in Arabic independently Textbooks for purchase: 1 Masood Ranginwala, Essentials of Quranic Arabic (Uṣūl al-lugha al-ʿarabiyya al-qurʾāniyya),volume 1 (Jamaica, NY: Islamic Learning Foundation, 2015). ISBN A Muṣḥaf, which is to say a copy of the Qurʾān in Arabic these are easy to buy from Amazon.com, local Islamic bookstore, etc. OR even to download as a Qurʾān app on a device (such as Qur anworks; see

3 I do not recommend using an English-Arabic duallanguage copy, as the plenary Arabic script in these can be small and hard to read. Some helpful resources online: The Qurʾan is one of the most studied and analyzed texts in the history of humanity. As a result, the resources for its study and mastery are vast. A simple Google search will lead you to many translations, but here are three of the more useful websites out there: Quranflash ( has several virtual print muṣḥafs that you can browse online. Most of the printed versions of the Qurʾan that one encounters nowadays follow the reading (القراءة) of Ḥafṣ-from-ʿĀṣim, but the Qur an-readings followed in any given region of the Islamic world used to be much more diverse. On this website, one can find muṣḥafs printed according to readings other than the widespread Ḥafṣ readings, such as Warsh-from-Nāfiʿ and al-dūrī-from-abū ʿAmr. The Quranic Arabic Corpus ( is a highly beneficial website that contains a word-by-word grammatical and linguistic analysis of the Arabic of the Qurʾan. I highly recommend consulting and using this website throughout the course. Corpus Coranicum ( is a German led project based in the Berlin- Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities and an indispensable resource for researchers in Quranic Studies. Still in its early stages, Corpus Coranicum aims to provide the earliest manuscript copies of the Qurʾan on a single web-resource. Grading This course will use cumulative point system for determining your grade: the higher number of points you gain by performing well on tests, quizzes, and assignments, the better you will do. Tests, quizzes, and memorization texts (i.e., of important texts from the Qur an) are listed on the class schedule. Homework assignments are handed out nearly every session and are due the following session. NOTE: Absolutely no late homework assignments will be accepted.
