1 Modern Muslim Word Map - Lesson Plan 1.) In this lesson, students will calculate the percentage of Muslims that live in regions around the world. The goal is for students to recognize the areas that are highly concentrated with Muslims as well as areas that have low concentrations. 2.) Pass out the Muslim World Math - Worksheet and instruct students how to find the percentage with the given data. I suggest doing a couple practice runs by having students calculate the percentage of boys/girls in class. Then possibly give them school data on boys/girls in their grade/school. 3.) Have students work in pairs or small groups to compile this data. Have students double-check their work, or have them double check their partners work. 4.) Instruct students that now they are ready to create their maps. First, transfer the data over to the map in the correct region. (Having them transfer the actual population numbers on the dividing line is optional. This can be eliminated if time is a concern. Of course though, students will always need to at least transfer the percentage). 5.) Instruct students that now it is time to shade in their maps properly. Most population density maps use the same color, just different shades of that color, to show varying levels of population. However, students (especially lower-level or younger students) can use 4 different colors to make their key and shade in the regions. 6.) Complete discussion questions once finished.

What factors can explain why these areas have the lowest percentages? 5.) Look at the Middle East. Now look at Central Asia, East Asia, South Asia, and Southeast Asia. What do you notice about this trend?

The Middle East North Africa Central Asia ) What can you infer about why these areas have the highest percentage of Muslims? -Islam was born in Mecca, which is the heart of the Middle East - Islam has been spreading ever since, however it is still strongest (by far) where it originated 3.) What are the 3 regions with the lowest percentage of Muslims? - South America.4 - Oceania Europe ) What factors can explain why these areas have the lowest percentages? - South America and Oceania are clearly separated by a water barrier. It is much easier to travel by land than by water. - Europe has a very low percentage because of the dominance of Christianity. Vatican City is also in Europe, which has made the continent a stronghold for Christianity. Also, the Holy Roman empire once extended all throughout Europe. 5.) Look at the Middle East. Now look at Central Asia, East Asia, South Asia, and Southeast Asia. What do you notice about this trend? - The Muslim population is very high in M.E. and C.A., however declines severely further east in South Asia and East Asia, but then grows significants in Southeast Asia. - For years, the Great Wall of China and Himalayan kept people from easily accessing these areas. - Also, this area has a strong background of Confucian/Buddhist influence, which has somewhat limited the spread of Islam.
