2 Key Vocabulary Immigration: the action of coming to live permanently in a foreign country Migration: the action of moving from one country, region, or place to another Push/Pull Factors: Push factors are reason people leave their country or region, pull factors are reason people move into a new area or country. (Political, economic, environmental, social) Refugee: A person who has been forced to leave their country in order to escape, war, persecution, or natural disaster Immigration Quotas: The US attempt to limit the number of immigrants coming into the country based on their nation of origin. Xenophobia: intense, irrational fear of people from other countries Naturalization: The process by which a foreigner becomes a citizen of a new country Protestant: a member or follower of any of the Western Christian churches that are separate from the Roman Catholic Church and follow the principles of the Reformation (monotheistic, Abrahamic)

3 Catholic: Members of the Roman Catholic faith, believe they can trace their religious background to the Apostle Peter (monotheistic, Abrahamic) Judaism: first of the monotheistic, Abrahamic faiths. The religion of the Jewish community. Islam: Monotheistic, Abrahamic faith as revealed to the Prophet Muhammad, Sunni: One of the two main branches of Islam, accept the first three Caliphs Shia: One of the two main branches of Islam, rejects the first 3 Sunni Caliphs & accepts Ali, the 4th Caliph as the true successor of Muhammad Sufism: mystical Islamic belief and practice in which Muslims seek to find the truth of divine love and knowledge through direct personal experience of God. Hinduism: is the religion of the majority of people in India and Nepal and has over 900 million adherents worldwide. Unlike other religions, has no single founder, no single scripture, and no commonly agreed set of teachings. Buddhism: From central & east Asia, the teachings of Siddhartha Gautama that suffering is part of life & one can be free from it by cultivating wisdom, virtue & concentration
