GMS AND ITS LIMBS The General Mohyal Sabha (GMS), earlier known as Mohyal Mitter Sabha, was established at Lahore on Within a year of its establishment, the following 12 local sabhas were started, at different places in Punjab, J&K and NWFP: 1. Abbottabad Jhelum Pind Dadan Khan Nov Gujrat (Punjab) Rawalpindi Sialkot Jammu Shahpur Quetta Kanjrur Jan Baluchistan Malkhanwala Note: Issues of the Mohyal Mitter for the period September 1891 to January 1892 are not available in the GMS Archives. The above information was collected from the Index of Mohyal Mitter for the first year prepared with great pains by Bakshi Balumkand Chhibber which is printed as a twelve page annexure zamima in the November 1892 issue of Mohyal Mitter. This evidence was accepted by the authorities of the Limca Book of Records who classified Mohyal Mitter as the oldest continuously published magazine in India. All the above local sabhas were affiliated to the main body i.e. the GMS. They functioned as limbs of the GMS and operated on the same lines as the parent body. The GMS had framed its own constitution and the Rules and Regulations and the local sabhahs applied the same to themselves. There was a code of conduct for the local sabhas, recommended by the GMS, like minimum number of members, rates of membership subscription, minimum number of meetings to be held every year, the amount of yearly affiliation fee etc., which was strictly followed by the local sabhas. It was also essential for the local sabhas to keep the channel of communication with the GMS open, so as to seek guidance and assistance or to render advice to the Apex Body. Subsequently, many more local sabhas came into being and many became dormant, all depending on the enthusiasm of the Office Bearers of the different sabhas at the relevant time. The partition of the country was a big blow to the GMS and the local sabhas. Most of the local sabhas became defunct. Of these, only the local sabha at Jammu that was established in January 1892, could survive the holocaust and is still functioning. Next in antiquity is the local sabha at Ambala, which also was started during the last decade of the nineteenth century. Currently, there are about 70 local sabhas, which figure in the latest telephone directory of the GMS. Of these, 55 sabhas were duly affiliated with the GMS, during the calendar year However, there are not more than 35 sabhas, who hold their meetings regularly and send their minutes for publication in the Mohyal Mitter, around in English language and around 8-10 in Hindi. There are hardly local sabhas, where the attendance of the members in the meetings is substantial. The activity of those of the sabhas, who hold their meetings regularly, is limited to passing the condolence resolutions, get, well wishes, exchanging greetings on birthdays and marriage anniversaries, arranging kitty parties, playing tambola and, sometimes, arranging picnics. They act more as social clubs than working for the, upliftment of the community, which should be the basic purpose of such sabhas. The rest of the affiliated sabhas are either non-functional or meet very infrequently. In the matter of permanent membership of the GMS, it is only in the case of one third of the sabhas that both the incumbent Presidents and Secretaries 3

4 are permanent members of the GMS. In one third of the sabhas, only one incumbent, either the President or the Secretary, is a permanent member and, in the case of the remaining one third of the sabhas neither the President nor the Secretary is a permanent member of the GMS. Most of the applications for financial assistance to the widows, students and others are sent to the GMS with hardly any scrutiny to separate the very deserving cases from the non-deserving ones. There is no monitoring, either by the local sabhas or the GMS, to evaluate the results of grant of assistance to the needy. At the Presidents and Secretaries Meet in April 2010, when it was decided to increase the monthly stipend of widows from Rs. 500/- to Rs. 750/-, it was also stipulated that, in addition, the local sabhas also would pay Rs. 250/- each to the widows, from their own resources, enhancing the relief to Rs. 1,000/- per widow per month. Unfortunately, hardly 4-5 local sabhas have implemented this decision. In order to have better interaction between the GMS and the local sabhas, the GMS has been constituting interaction committees, which used to visit the locals sabhas, particularly during their monthly meetings. Somehow or other, of late, this has not been happening for sometime now. To make these committees more functional and resultoriented, we have since formed a Central Interaction Committee, in addition to the zonal committees, for better interaction and coordination with the local sabhas. The local sabhas are the main source of information to the apex body about Mohyals and their problems and aspirations, which helps the GMS to frame policies and/or modifying the existing policies, with the aim being the welfare of the community members. The other avenue for interaction between the GMS & the local sabhas has been the periodical Meet being organized between the GMS and Presidents & Secretaries of the local sabhas, where matters of mutual interest are discussed and solutions sought to be found. As has been frequently (and correctly) remarked, the GMS is the body and the local sabhas its limbs, branching out to different regions, so that the Mohyals may prosper under the shades of this large Banyan tree, consisting of the GMS & the local sabhas. We would urge all members of our community to make full use of this tree, for getting assistance in all spheres of their lives, whether it is financial assistance to the needy widows/students, matrimonial assistance, career counseling, education etc. Both the GMS and the local sabhas are always at the service of the community in all these. The local sabhas also require to be geared up for this, more efficiently, and their monthly meetings made more meaningful, instead of these being just chit-chat clubs or social get-togethers, so that the community members may look up to them with confidence, in times of need. (at the bottom of this page) SHARPEN YOUR AXE Jo, John, a wood cutter, worked for a company for five years but never got a raise. The company hired Bill and, within a year, he got a raise. This caused resentment in John and he went to his boss to talk about it. The boss said You are still cutting the same number of trees you were cutting five years ago. We are a result-oriented company and would be happy to give you a raise, if your productivity goes up. John went back, started hitting harder and putting in longer hours, but he still was not able to cut more trees. He went back to his boss and told him his dilemma. The boss told John to go talk to Bill. May be there is some thing Bill knows that you and I don t. John asked Bill how he managed to cut more trees. Bill answered After every tree I cut, I take a break for two minutes and sharpen my axe. When was the last time you sharpened your axe? This question hit home like a bullet and John got his answer. My question is, when was the last time you sharpened your axe? Post-glory and education, we don t do it. We have to continuously sharpen the axe. SERIES 4 Why do we wear marks (Tilak, Pottu and the like) on the forehead? The Tilak, or Pottu invokes a feeling of sanctity in the wearer and others. It is recognized as a religious mark. Its form and colour vary according to one s caste, religious sect or the form of the Lord worshipped. In earlier times, the four castes (based on varna or colour) Brahmana, Kshatriya, Vaishya and Sudra - applied the marks differently. The Brahmin applied a white Chandan mark signifying purity, as his profession was of a priestly, or academic, nature. The Kshatriya applied a red kumkum mark signifying valour, as he belonged to the warrior race. The Vaishya wore a yellow kesar, or turmeric, mark signifying prosperity, as he was a businessman, or trader, devoted to creation of wealth. The Sudra applied a black bhasma, kasturi, or charcoal, mark signifying service, as he supported the work of the other three divisions. Also, Vishnu-worshippers apply a chandan tilak of the shape U, Shiva-worshippers a tripundra of bhasma, Devi-worshippers a red dot of kumkum and so on. The tilak covers the spot between the eyebrows, which is the seat of memory and thinking. It is known as the Aajna Chakra, in the language of Yoga. The tilak is applied with the prayer May I remember the Lord! May this pious feeling pervade all my activities! May I be righteous in my deeds! Even when we temporarily forget this prayerful attitude, the mark on another reminds us of our resolve. The tilak is thus a blessing of the Lord and a protection against wrong tendencies and forces. The entire body emanates energy in the form of electro-magnetic waves the forehead and the subtle spot between the eyebrows, especially so. That is why worry generates heat and causes a headache. The tilak, or pottu, cools the forehead, protects us and prevents energy loss. Sometimes, the entire forehead is covered with chandan or bhasma. Using plastic, re-usable, stick bindis is not very beneficial, even though it serves the purpose of decoration. Compiled by: Col. T.N. Mehta Answer to Riddle- NOTHING! 20 A STEP IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION By Ch. G. L. Datta Josh Gone are the days when the joint family system was in vogue in the Hindu families, specially the Mohyals, who have century-old agricultural background, and, who lived together in small villages or townships, near their parental rural belts, called Mandis, in erstwhile Punjab, before the unfortunate division of our motherland, on the fateful 15 th August Those strongholds were popular and well-known in the Mohyal biradari. Partition of India was a total disaster for the Mohyals. It resulted in the total uprooting of the community, just as in the case of an earthquake or country-wide floods or a national calamity; and scattered the Mohyals throughout the length and breadth of the country. It took decades, i.e., till the late seventies, for them to settle. At the time of partition, the Mohyal Mitter got a temporary refuge in Amritsar, at the residence of Bakshi Amar Singh Vaid-Shamsher Singh Vaid. It was then shifted to Delhi-Chabiganj-Delhi and, later, to Mohyal Nagar, called Inderpuri, established by M/s. Engineering Industrial Corporation, New Delhi, between the Pusa Agricultural Institute and Naraina village. The colony was promoted by Ch. Sham Dass Dutt, younger brother of Mohyal stalwart, Ch. Harnam Dass Dutt. The GMS got three plots of land there, for the construction of the Mohyal Bhawan. From the late 1970 s, when the GMS started functioning in their premises, there was an acute problem for the Mohyals to find suitable matrimonial alliances. Though Mohyal Mitter was in circulation, it was in the Urdu medium and had very meagre circulation. The then Managing Committee introduced Matrimonial Columns in the Mohyal Mitter, but with little response. A Matrimonial Committee was formed. I remember, I worked as Secretary of this Committee, for 7-8 years, and, on Sundays, I used to receive parents at my residence, seeking matrimonial alliances for their wards. In 1978, when Rzd. B. D. Bali took over, the face of the Mohyal Mitter changed with the times. It was brought out in three languages (Urdu, Hindi & English), the tide turned and the community heaved a sigh of relief. In the 1982 Mohyal Conference, there was a fresh wave and the biradari saw a new and bright horizon in every field, and, since then, the position has changed altogether. With the passage of time, under the far-sighted and visionary leadership of Rzd. B.D. Bali, monthly get-togethers & quarterly get-togethers, under the Matrimonial Committee, started at the Inderpuri Mohyal Bhawan, which earned name and fame for the GMS and we reaped rich dividends. The process got momentum and, nowadays, grand matrimonial melas are held, every year, at the Mohyal Foundation, New Delhi, where hundreds of parents participate and benefit; where all facilities are provided to them for tallying of horoscopes etc and the results are overwhelming. It appears that the days of scarcity have gone by, with the energetic efforts of our very efficient Committee on Matrimony and the able & dynamic leadership of the worthy President GMS. The present efforts of Ch. Vinod Dutt, President, MS Khanna, who has managed to host his second Matrimonial Mela at his place in Punjab, on the 31 st March 2013, is not only laudable, but praiseworthy; first, it is being arranged under the cover of the parent body, GMS, and, secondly, it is being organized in close cooperation of all the local sabhas, in the vicinity. Ch. Vinod Dutt is a very effective, efficient, influential, philanthropic, social, God-fearing, down-toearth, person and believes in uplift of the needy, with the blessings of his elders, especially, the late Ch. Ganesh Dass Dutt of Zafarwal, one of the founders of the GMS. I wish him grand success in this endeavour.
