Meaning of Possessiveness! Non -Possessiveness Possessiveness is the feeling ofbeing the owner ofthings. Not the 'number ofthings' an individual possesses, butthe affitude he harbours towards those things, the way he relates to them, determines his possessiveness. We display feelings of ownership not only towards things, but even towards people. A husband tries to own his wife; a father, his son and a teacher, his student. Possessiveness is another dimension ofviolence, because no one can own another -without taking away the other's independence. Perhaps man tries to make up for lack of authority over himself by ruling others. He wishes to become independent by making others dependent on him. But dependence is on both sides; both parties gettied. We get bound to them because our sense of ownership is dependent on them. If the ones we claim to own leave us, our 'ownership' over them also goes. How can we then be called their owners? We collect things so that they can serve us but, instead, we end up serving them. Does the Treasure Chest look after us, or do we look after it? We become slaves of such objects, of our own accord. It is our perception that brings aboutthis slavery. The objects are not even aware that humans believe they own them. Desire for things makes you experience bondage. With no desire, you are free. One, who has no longing to make anyone a slave, and does notwish to own anything or anyone - he alone is a real owner in this world. He alone, whose ownership is not dependent on others, is truly possessive and is truly happy, peaceful, seffled and secure. This is the essence of 'aparigraha' or nonpossessiveness. The inner deficiency in us cannot not be filled by the presence ofexternal objects; then can giving them up fill the space? First, you wish to fill the inner chasm by collecting external things, and, having affained them, when you realise that they cannot fill the inner void, you relinquish them. But what cannot be filled with the addition ofthings will not be filled by subtracting them either. Non-possessiveness means attaining inner completeness by realising the Self, abiding in the Self. Then, the emptiness within us is filled and the frenzy to collect outer objects ceases. Having experienced inner absoluteness, the desire to either hoard things, or to give them up, vanishes. When the Self is realized, inner wealth is affained. Then one understands how vain the effort of collecting, or renouncing, outer things is. Once inner completeness is attained, the hold over external things is automatically given up. Realising that it is futile to hold on to anything, one becomes non-possessive. The meaning of non-possessiveness is not to have the sense of ownership. It means transformation in one's relationship to others. When the sense of ownership wanes, it results in nonpossessiveness. He called the surgeon and said, "Look atthis engine. I opened its heart, took the valves out, repaired and put them back. So why do I get such a small salary and you get such a huge sum?" The doctor smiled atthe mechanic and coming close to his ear, said, " Try the same when the engine is running." YOUNG MAN & THE COUPLE A 24 year-old man, watching out from the trains window, shouted, "Dad, look, the trees are going behind." Dad smiled and a young couple sitting nearby looked at the 24 year-olds childish behaviour with pity. Suddenly, he again exclaimed, Dad, look, the clouds are running with us!" The couple couldnt resist and said to the old man, "Why dont you take your son to a good doctor?" The old man smiled and said "I did and we are just coming from the hospital. My son was blind from birth; he just got his eyes today." MORAL - Every single person in the planet has a story Don't judge people before you truly know it. The truth might surprise you! The documentation that Shreeya worked on in preparation forthe news details notjustthe mechanics of rolling out a full-blown mini-website with text, photography, video, graphics, social, reader engagement, and interactivity, but it conveys the strategy, editorial planning and timing for web, mobile, apps and social. When the news came down, on deadline, the rollout of rich, engaging content was flawless thanks to Shreeya's planning and thorough documentation. Her own masterful execution, and on-the-fly troubleshooting was versatile. She worked h and-inhand with designers, coordinated with graphics editors and managed the flow of video and text. And as the official mourning reached its conclusion, Shreeya worked to showcase our best content in a commemorative magazine on Flipboard. The Hindus believe that bathing in the pond, on special occasions, helps affain salvation. According escorted by commandos. Thejourney lasted five hours, during which we halted at Behra and Sargodha, for tea etc. When we reached Shree Katas Raj Ji, the District authorities welcomed us warmly. Smt. Veena Chhibber, who is an ex-mla, I L h:---i " il.,, t I. i :Ll.. L.: ; to Hindu legends, Lord Shiva was so stricken by grief on the death ofhis consort, Sati, that he cried bifferly. His raining eyes created two holy pools - one at Katas and another at Pushkara in Ajmer. According to another tradition, Yudhisthira defeated the Yaksha at this site. As usual, the Government of Pakistan sponsored the visits to Shree Katas Raj Ji in the shape of pilgrimage, (which it has been doing for the last more than 25 years) in the month of December, The date ofthe visitwas fixed on About 1 20 Hindus from India participated in the visit.1 2 of these were from the Mohyal community, i.e., Shri Vipin Mohan, Smt. Veena Chhibber, Smt. Nisha Mehta, and 5/Shri Rakesh Mehta, Vijay Mehta, Rakesh Chhibber, Padam Duffa & Manish Bali. Thejourney, which started fromyamuna Nagar, bythe Shan-e- Punjab, reached Amritsar, on , evening. The Mohyals were felicitated by Bk. Raj Kumar Chhibber of Putli Bazar, Amritsar, who had made excellent arrangements and had also arranged the serving of a nice dinner, and made their stay comfortable. On , we went to Durgayan Mandirto pay our respects to Lord Vishnu & Mata Laxmi, after which we departed for Wagha Border. On our arrival at the Wagha Border, on the Pakistan territory, the officials ofthe Pakistan Government welcomed us warmly, served refreshments. We left the Wagha Border and reached Gurdwara Dera Dass, in the heart of Lahore, near Minara Pakistan on the banks of Ravi river, and our stay at the Gurdwara, arranged by the Pakistan Government, was comfortable. On , we left for Shree Amar Kund and Shree Katasraj Ii ihriiif flfl kmc frrim I ihnrp h; flp_iiivp hiicpc A,hiih wr was received by the Member of Parliament ofchatwal, Begum Sultanta, who felt proud that Smt. We had a holy dip in Shree Amar Kund, prayed forthe departed souls ofour forefathers and also paid our obeisance atthe great Shiva Temple, which has been there since time immemorial. There is an inscription on stone there, stating that Tirath Shree Katas Ra] Ji is as sacred as Haridwar. The authorities at Chakwal, especially, the MP. Smt. Sultana, Dy. Shri Rakesh Mehta was escorted to the village by the police. He was thrilled to see the Gun (Tope), which had been installed in the village by his grand father with the help of other army personnel from the village (about 500 soldiers from this village had taken part in the 2nd World War.). This was the only village in Asia, which was honored by the British, with the presentation ofa Gun. On , we had a holy dip in the sacred Amar Kund, once again, performed Hayan in the Mandir and left for Lahore late in the evening. On , wewenttothe markets oflahore, viz.,anarkali Bazar, Kishanpura Bazar and Delhi Gate Bazar, for shopping. The hospitality & affection ofthe shopkeepers and the general public of Pakistan cannot be explained in words. Their conduct and love & affection for Indians is remarkable and, as the language is the same, no one feltthat we were in Pakistan. On , we were given a warm send-off by the Pakistani authorities at the Wagha Border. 23 LIFE AND DEATH Death must be something extraordinary, as life is. Life is a total thing. Sorrow, pain, anguish, joy, absurd ideas, possession, envy, love, the aching misery of loneliness - all that is life. And to understand death, we must understand the whole life, notjust a fragment of it and live with that fragment, as most of us do. In the venj understanding of life, there is the understanding of death, because the two are not separate. - J. Once, in a serious stinging baffle with the Jats, his head was treacherously chopped off by the opponents and the story goes that the headless body of the gallant warrior, with sword in his hand, went on fighting over a distance ofnearly 2.5 miles, till it reached the banks ofthe river Basantar and fell down there. His admirers built a Samadhi on that spot, which was regularly visited by devoted Mohyals and was the venue of celebrations of Diwali and other community festivals. Baba Thakkar, the Shaheed, begot four sons, named Veeram, Jitar, Sahdev and Sarang. To honour the memory of the first two, there are villages named after them. Mohyals settled at Gurdaspur have built a memorial shrine to honour the memory of Baba Thakkar. Recently, GMS gave a grant of Rs. i.50 lakhs forthis memorial. Every year, on "Basant Panchami", a mela is organized at the Samadhi, to seek the Babas blessings, by thousands of Mohyals, from all nook and corner of the country. Langar is arranged by the devotees, with the association ofthe District Mohyal Sabha, Gurdaspur; parent body; GMS, also contributes Rs. i 0,000t- for the "Prasad", every year. In the pre-partition times, Mohyal Ratna Ch. Harnam Dass Daft of Kanjrur was generous enough to build a room and verandah at the Samadhi and made handsome donations for the Samadhi and for constructing a brick footpath as an approach to the Samadhi. Children's sports used to be held and prizes distributed by him to the winners at Basant Panchmi festivals. Ashram,Vrindavan, in memory of Shri Harikrishan Chhibber ( ) & Smt.
