Since the Fall of 2017, we have been discussing the idea of changing the times of our Sunday worship hour and finding the best way to meet the needs of our entire congregation. At our November Church Council meeting, it was decided to keep our worship at 8:30 and 11:00 on Sunday. We had a thorough discussion and considered feedback we had received from our members and friends. Our attendance at 11:00 is smaller in number, but the persons who attend prefer that time. Those women and men are precious daughters and sons of God and they deserve our best efforts in showing them respect, love and hospitality. It is a broadly held belief in the United Methodist Church that a congregation is stronger if it offers multiple worship opportunities to its members. We will also continue to shape our worship practices in ways that lead to the most authentic worship possible. With our current schedule, we have the opportunity to gather for fellowship together at 9:30 am. We encourage all children, youth and adults to participate in Christian education classes at 9:45. This means that whatever time you decide to worship, the entire Church family can gather for fellowship and conversation before Sunday School. On another matter, most of you are aware that our Church now has a Building Committee that is up and running. The first task of this group is to explore ways to improve the Lighting and Audio/Visual systems in the Church sanctuary. We have met three times as group and have contacted professionals from outside our congregation to assist us. I am very appreciative of the dedication and hard work of this committee. This important challenge will take some time to complete, but be are making progress. We are interested in any suggestions our members might have and encourage you to put those in writing. You can put any written suggestions in the Building Committee mailbox in the workroom next to the Church office or them to: caryumc@caryumc.org. May God in Christ bless you richly, Pastor Michael Hickok 14 3

On December 3, we went to Mega Trampoline in Crystal Lake to take the stresses of the holiday out by jumping our cares away. We also enjoyed playing dodgeball, racing each other through the obstacle course and huddling in the Hurricane Machine together. On December 17, we went to the Chelsea Parsonage for our annual Christmas party! We played Christmas games with prizes, ate dinner together and exchanged gifts. As we get lost in all the fun, we are learning that we are a church family that loves and cares for one another. 5

7 Here I go again! Back to Zihuatanejo, Mexico to serve in a ministry about which I am passionate, Casa Maria Asilo, a rundown facility that warehouses about 15 impoverished, elderly, and disabled souls. The prayers and encouragement of my CUMC family have strengthened me in mission. You have shown an interest and donated items for the children. I was invited to do 2 presentations at Dorcas Circle and a children s message. You have joined my private Facebook page where I share candidly about the greed that prevents these people from receiving far less than basic human care and some of you have trusted me with financial contributions. For all of this, my heartfelt thanks! You have assisted me in replacing mattress and purchase a washing machine for the home. While helping do laundry last month, I discovered that all the rinsing and wringing is done by hand, 3 small bowls of water, a good twist then hung on the line. I quickly understood why the residents were always in soiled clothing. You are helping me make a difference in a very dreary, hopeless life. I want to be perfectly clear, this trip is entirely at my expense. I go because I have been called. I am lucky enough that my calling is to serve in an earthly, tropical paradise. All monetary donations are used entirely to improve the quality of life of these residents - physical, medical, and emotional. I lead this ministry in partnership with the Zihuatanejo Christian Fellowship Church. Although the senior home has been one of the many outreaches of ZCF for several years, a well-coordinated consistent team has never been in place specific to the seniors. In addition to ministering to these people, my primary purpose is to develop a care team of locals and visitors. An American resident of Zihuatanejo has offered to provide storage space for our donated supplies as it is not secure to leave them on site. As they love to say in Mexico, poco a poco. Little by little! If it is on your heart to help support my ministry you can do so at The senior page is not yet updated, but it is possible to donate for the Casa Maria Asilo ministry on that site. Our US dollar is strong in Mexico which gives me mighty purchasing power of both labor and supplies. I don t have a return date at this time but probably beginning to mid-february depending on our team progress. I am planning on going again at the end of May and although I am not organizing a mission trip, I would welcome any of you to visit when I do. With me as your personal tour guide you can see it all the beautiful, the horrific, the joy and the sorrow. I found it to be life changing, perhaps you may. 10 Deb Kraemer Pumpkin Patch Update Another great success for the Pumpkin Patch! We started out this year with strong winds on Saturday evening after the guys set the pumpkin patch up. We lost the tent and had to buy another one on Sunday and set it up during and after the pumpkins arrived. We earned $813 from the sale of which $613 will go into the Church s operating account because the tent cost $200. Not bad concerning what we had to deal with from the start. I would like to take this opportunity to thank around 35 volunteers which includes the boy scouts and their family from troop 160 who came out to help unload the pumpkins from the truck on Sunday. A big THANK YOU to the 76 volunteers that spent time over the month of October working in the pumpkin patch which does include the preschool taking two days to sale pumpkins to help out the church and especially the people who filled in when I needed the help most. Thank you!!! I would like to extend a special thank you to the men s group and Trustees for setting up the pumpkin patch on Saturday morning. Big thanks go to Mark Peterson for supplying the 30 pallets to keep the pumpkins off the ground. Special thanks to Rich Heizer, Oscar Garcia, John Murphy and Bruce Oberlies for helping take down the pumpkin patch on October 31 st. Plus, I can t leave off a thank you to Tom and Deb Kraemer for taking all the left-over pumpkins to use at their house for compost and food for animals to survive during the winter months. This is a great outreach to the community and the community is really starting to wait for us to open the pumpkin patch each year. Well, see you next year and thanks again! Just to give you an update on the fundraisers for this year: Golf outing $ 4,075 Stamp Camp $ 1,100 Cards for Sale (Mother s, Father s Day, Valentine & Easter) $1,134 Valentine Drawing $169 Turkey/Ham Drawing $216 Vendor Fair $ 357 Buffalo Wild Wings $ 95 Galatis $ 178 Giorgio s Pizza $144 Portillo s $56 Total $ 7,524 The Finance Committee would like to thank you for your support. 7
