GAYE SANTORO, PASTOR September I thank my God every time I remember you, 4 constantly praying with joy in every one of my prayers for all of you, 5 because of your sharing in the gospel from the first day until now. - Phil 1:3-5 Dear Friends, What a joy it has been to help plan and celebrate High Church s 200 years together as a faithful community of Christ! Just about every week I walk around the CIC room and look at the walls covered in pictures, newspaper articles and other memorabilia commemorating the events throughout the life of Emanuel. Some of the events are big, such as the addition of the education wing and building of the parsonage. Other events are more personal: wedding pictures, anniversary celebrations, significant birthdays spent together in fellowship hall. All of the occasions depicted add up to illustrate how each of you have blessed this church and how the church has been a living, breathing, part of each of your lives. On Sunday, September 17 th, we will be graced by the presence of many of the pastors who have faithfully served here over the years. It will be a time of remembrance and celebration as we worship and dine together, thanking God for the steadfast love and guidance we have received inside these walls. September will be a time of tremendous joy as we reconnect with old friends and as we prepare for our future. Our forefathers and foremothers have left us a great legacy, a treasure in this earthen vessel. Let us ensure that High Church remains the Beacon on the Hill to future pilgrims as is has been for so many for two centuries. May we continue to live up to the special legacy entrusted to us by our service in Christ s name to meet the needs of our community and the greater world. 2 Stewardship Corner The people rejoiced at the willing response of their leaders, for they had given freely and wholeheartedly to the Lord. David the king also rejoiced greatly. --I Chronicles 29:9 This chapter of Chronicles records the pledge drive and fund-raising efforts for the building of the temple of Solomon to the Lord. King David provided all the resources from the public treasuring of the building. He also pledged incredible wealth from his personal treasures to the Temple. His model of generosity inspired families, leaders, commanders and officials of the people of Israel to give willingly of all they had to the Temple fund. The people rejoiced at the demonstration of giving to the Lord, recognizing that all gifts originated with God and, therefore, belong to God. This chronicle of God s people illustrates many important themes in Christian giving. First, the giving was deliberate, not by spontaneous accident. Secondly, the giving was done willingly, freely and wholeheartedly and not out of half-interested obligation or guilt. Thirdly, the giving was done in praise to God with humble acknowledgement that all gifts are of God. The central theme in I Chronicles 29 is that the people rejoiced at the response of giving demonstrated by the leaders. This, in turn, caused David to rejoice. David s example motivated the others to give because giving is infectious. Those who lead us must model giving and we, in turn, must provide the example to those we lead. This theme requires application in our churches and in our homes. If we, as leaders in our church, our home, and in the community, hope to praise God through giving, we must first step out by modeling giving, demonstrating our heart of thanks to the Lord. To my Emanuel Church Family, Thank you so much for again awarding me the church s scholarship. It is such a blessing to receive this support while working on my education. It will really help me obtain the needed accounting books for my last year of classes. I look forward to seeing you all when I return from school! 3 Blessing of the Animals September 24 th - 10:30AM Worship Service at Doylestown Memorial Park, Pavilion #1 Emanuel will be partaking in this custom which is conducted in remembrance of St. Francis of Assisi s love for all creatures. The love we give to a pet, and receive from a pet, can draw us more deeply into the larger circle of life, into the wonder of our common relationship to our Creator. Please bring your leashed or crated pets to our worship service & blessing. Even if you don t have a pet, come & join in the celebration. We are asking for monetary or supply donations for the Wayne County Humane Society. Suggested supply donations include: bleach, kitten formula, laundry soap, ammonia. Consider volunteering your time. Further information about the Wayne County Humane Society and a more extensive donation list can be found at wchs.org. DOYLESTOWN 562 Gates St. Marge and Ralph's Saturday, September 16th, 8:00am-2:00pm Donations can be dropped off on Friday. All profits will go to missions to fund the soup kitchen. Anything that doesn't sell will be donated to local charities. We need help Friday afternoon to set up and organize, anytime Saturday to keep things going smoothly & at 2:00 to pack up. 4 In honor of Emanuel s bicentennial, Art Holden has provided historical facts that are read before our Sunday offering. In case you missed one or would like to read them again, please find the facts from August below. August 6: In turning out a quilt a month on average, the High Church quilters used their profits on favorable church projects. The cost of their services was determined by how many yards of thread they used. One of the last quilts the ladies completed was in December of 2004, ending over a 100-year run. Geraldine Wagner is the lone remaining High Church member who was a full-time quilter. August 13: In wrapping up our anniversary anecdotes on the High Church quilters, there was always a waiting list to have a quilt done. However, the ladies always found time for make a quilt for each new pastor, with Jeff Nelson the last to receive the special gift. August 20: Over the years, the ladies made several religious-themed quilts, but one in particular stands out. In the 1920s, church members paid to have their names put on a quilt, and then it was auctioned off. Mabel Lowery, who of note lived to be 101, won the bidding for the church signature quilt. August 27: It was 30 years ago this month, that the handbells first rang at High Church. With the original donation of $5,000 from Frances Walsh, and Julie Huckriede's vision, the addition to our music program got its start. Julie has been the bell choir's director for all 30 of those years. The bells have blessed our church for three decades, as well as ringing at nursing homes, weddings, funerals and for numerous fellowship groups. The 200 th Anniversary Committee is compiling a memory booklet for our Homecoming Service and Dinner on September 17 and we need your input. Please take a few minutes to add your thoughts. If you are saving an item for a future event, please mark item with post -it note provided in basket on side of fridge. Write the group and/or event item is being saved for. (Example - Please save for movie night.) This applies for individuals and Emanuel groups. Please be aware of expiration dates when saving items. Anything past their expiration date, even if marked for event, will be tossed for sanitary & safety reasons. Any unmarked items will be removed during bi-monthly cleanings.
