Well friends, we all got some big, unexpected news this past month! It was announced and made public on May 20 th that on July 1 st I will begin a new appointment as the pastor of Father Dyer United Methodist Church in Breckenridge, Colorado. And on June 3 rd it was announced that Pastor Melinda Roberts will be coming here to join you all as the next pastor of your church. Of course I will miss all of you terribly. I have greatly enjoyed my three years here with you, and have been blessed by being your pastor. We re shared a lot of laughs (I m looking at you, Wednesday morning women s Bible study). And we re shared some hard times together too. Through it all, we ve been blessed together by God s calling and God s grace. I know that change and transition can be hard. But in all things we trust in God. It was a hard phone call for me to receive from our district superintendent, informing me that the Bishop and her cabinet were moving me to a new church and community. Given my preference, I would have chosen to stay here in Salida with you for a few more years. But in our Methodist itinerant system that goes all the way back to John Wesley, elders of the church such as myself go where we are sent. So for me, this is an exercise in trust. I trust that the Bishop and her cabinet (including your former pastor Rev. Margaret Gillikin) know what they re doing. I trust in Pastor Melinda that she will be a good pastor with you and for you and will do God s work with you. I trust in you that you ll keep being the church and will keep doing what God calls you to do. I trust that God s work and God s people will be in Breckenridge just as God s work and God s people have been here in Salida. Since you ll have a new pastor starting on July 1 st, and I ll have a new church starting on July 1 st that will keep me more than busy, anything and everything that comes up in your life will be the responsibility of Pastor Melinda. You re not going to hear from me at all after July 1 st, and if I hear from you about anything the only response you ll get is to talk to Pastor Melinda. I know that may sound harsh, but it is the healthiest thing for everyone. I will be working with Pastor Melinda as much as I can between now and the end of the month. From what I know of her and her work so far, I am genuinely excited and thankful that she is coming to you to be your next pastor. I believe she will bring the same positive energy that I have. She has gifts and graces that are ideal to follow my ministry with you. And, truthfully friends, I believe she has skills and abilities I do not. She is going to connect with and reach people that I never could. She is going to bless our community in ways that I can t. Pastor Melinda has years of successful experience growing a church s ministry with those that the church has had trouble connecting with. I believe she is the right person for you and the Salida community for this time in the life of the church. Pastor Ponderings continued on page 2 1

Pastor Ponderings continued from page 1 Always remember, God has a bigger plan than we do. And God will use this transition and change of leadership to bless the church so that you all can be a more powerful blessing to Salida and the world. As I close this, my final newsletter message to you, may you receive these words of blessing, based on Philippians 4:4-9 Rejoice always, for God is good Be gentle to all, and do not worry For prayer and deep peace unutterable will be your way Seek all that is true and just Keep on doing what we have shared together And God s peace will be with you Peace, Rev. Born outside Philadelphia, Pa., she grew up riding her horse on the beaches of New Jersey and later moved to the Orlando, Fla., area. There she met and married an Air Force man, Samuel Adams. They had two sons and a daughter. She had a passion for teaching and loved to swim, so she began instructing children at the base pool, later finding her niche as a special education instructor. With her family, she moved to Littleton in late She loved the peace of the mountains and said she d found the home she d always dreamed of and would never hear of living anywhere else again. She received a bachelor s degree in special education from Loretto Heights College in the late 1970s, and took pride in her Special Olympians, with whom she traveled to a number of Olympic events. Family and friends said there was never a more dedicated teacher/coach, and she will be fondly remembered by many grateful children and parents. She remarried in 1979 to Norris S. Miller, and together they trekked the world, seeing many sites of the USA, Africa, China, Japan, Fiji, Greece, Turkey, Australia and her favorite, New Zealand. They traveled to Mexico multiple times with their church group to assist with building schools and also volunteered nearer to home with Habitat for Humanity. She and her husband lived their Christian faith and opened their home to many foreign exchange students from Japan, Africa, Argentina and Lebanon, a number of whom continue to write and visit, still sharing their lives 40 years later with their host family. The couple lived in Salida for 18 years and developed lasting friendships with many friends, who shared their love of cross-country skiing and square dancing. Mrs. Miller was an active member of the Salida Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday school, helped with community dinners, participated in mission outreach and served people from all walks of life. Mrs. Miller s family said she would want her survivors to spend time with your children, walk on the beach with your best friend, hike a mountain with the love of your life and raise a toast to enduring friendships lifelong and beyond. Survivors include her husband; son, Mark Adams of Putney, Vt.; daughter, Kim Logsdon of Fostoria, Ohio; stepdaughters, Deborah Wolfe of Parker, Angela Page and Laura Johnson of Dillon; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. A celebration of her life will take place at 10 a.m. June 16, 2018, at Salida United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to United Methodist Committee on Relief or Habitat for Humanity. Arrangements are with Bullock Mortuary in Englewood. 4

OUR CHILDREN S PROGRAM PLEASE NOTE: Our Children s Program will not meet for the months of June, July & August. Children s Program will resume in September! Children and families are always welcome to attend our worship services. Well stocked activity bags for children are available in the church entrance. Eduardisms One More Time, Again Here we are, again. Another pastor is leaving. Again, our church is forced into changes and a bit of turmoil. This is how church life goes, especially United Methodist church life. When our new pastor arrives, it ll be easy and perhaps less painful when they, too, finally and inevitably are called to another congregation to keep them at arm s length. Not to open ourselves so much to them. Well... Think about a worship service. The pastor, assisted and guided by God, leads the service for his audience of participants, the congregation. That s how it goes, right? *sigh* Yeah. Much too frequently so; and it s backward. The congregation, assisted and guided by the pastor, leads the service, with God as the participating audience; this is how things are meant to go. The pastor s role is that of intermediary. In the background, not the forefront. Worship, which includes all of our church life, in and out of the church building, is our relationship to God, our growing Godward to become more Christlike. The pastor assists, but they are not in charge of our church, we are. Have you noticed how often it is that a pastor s family are each members of the church, but the pastor isn t? There s a reason for that. It s a cliché: Who ministers the minister? It usually winds up being a fellow minister, or perhaps some mentor or seminary instructor. Again, this is backward. We minister the minister. At this moment, Calob is going through stuff, too. Who s gonna be there for him? Article provided by Lori Isenberger One hundred thirty-five years ago, the Methodist Episcopal Church was formed. The Presbyterian Church began in 1880 and they offered the Methodists a place to worship until they could build a place of their own. Within a short space of time, the three room white structure was built and the members began meeting in their church. Within a short period of time the members decided to build a larger brick building on the property and in 1889 the church was begun and completed. In 1900 the Rocky Mountain Annual Conference was held in the new church. There is a stained glass window that was dedicated to that event. So, let s take some time to look at some things in the building. (Try to imagine you are sitting in a pew and looking around) The stained glass windows were installed when the church was built. The windows remain in the same area where they were first placed. The names on the windows came later and represent some of our early clergy and some of our Sunday school teachers and Superintendents. The Sunday school was a large factor in our church and averaged 10 classes a year and the members were adults of all ages. In addition to studying the Bible, the classes often took up the task of raising funds for needed projects around the church. The main project for the year was the Christmas activity to be enjoyed by the whole church and guests. This might have been going caroling, building a snow house, having a musical, play or a party for the children of the church. Now, you might ask, Where were these plays, or musicals performed? Right in front of the pews in the area that they called the Stage. There were no chairs in that front area. There was no podium or wooden flower holders, no tables for communion. The pastor must have been in the audience area, either walking up and down the aisles, around the pews or just standing in front to give the sermon. If you check the picture in the parlor you will find one of the Stage. And the area we now call the choir loft held the organ, but because the pipes took up a lot of space, the back wall had to be moved further to the back to accommodate the pipes, but no choir. In 1946 the pastor began to look for another used organ. It was his hope that he could find one able to use the current pipes. Unfortunately, even after taking about 10 years of looking, the job proved to be impossible. The current pipe organ was found and moved to our church in 1957, but it was placed on the main floor Our Church History continued on page 6 5

Our Church History continued from page 5 to the right side of the stage, where it remains today. As for the pipes, they make nice decoration, but are not in use with the current organ. Take a look above you now. Notice all the wood that looks like it is holding up the ceiling. The major purpose of the carved wood is to decorate the ceiling area. A member of the church carved it to fit the ceiling and to make it look decorative. About 10 years ago, the center of the beams looked as if one beam was moving away from the center. Was the ceiling going to fall? Not likely we were told. The beams are just decoration. Talking about decoration When you look at the roof of the church, you will see a bell steeple. Except that it has never held a bell. There were two times in my reading of the history of the church that discussed buying a bell for the steeple. But it was never to happen. More next issue. Stained Glass Window Update June 2018 Where we are now: During the first part of June, Phase I of the stained glass restoration project will get under way. Denver Art Glass Inc. will begin work with the large group of stained glass panels that make up part of the windows on the 4 th Street side of our church. The company will remove the glass and ship it to their location in Denver. Window openings will be boarded up with wood and wall board that will allow in natural light. After disassembly, each piece will undergo cleaning, repairs, and repainting of dedication plates. Any previous repairs will also be addressed at this time. The reassembly process will include restoration grade lead solder along with putty solution to waterproof the panels. The glass will undergo a cleaning process followed by attaching reinforcing bars. Finally, the restored stained glass will make its way home to 4 th street. Total time will be about 5 months. The price for this work is $50,640 divided into 3 payments with the first $10,000 payment is due within14 days following removal of the stained glass panels. The second payment amount, $25,000 is due within 14 days of notification of completion of the restoration process and that the stained glass panels are ready for installation. Then the balance of $15,640 is due within 14 days of installation. Thanks to many very generous donations, we now have $41,640 for this initial phase. Our goal will be to raise $34,000 in the coming months to cover the $9,000 remaining on this first phase along with surplus to solidify our commitment to the second phase of restoration (below is a brief description of future plans). How we got here: 1900 The First United Methodist Church building in Salida is completed. As a sign of the time, beautiful stained glass windows adorn the new sanctuary. Fast forward 118 years. The passing of time has not been kind to our stained glass windows. Significant structural damage has occurred to most of the panels. In March 2016, the Trustee Committee was tasked with finding a solution for the stained glass damage caused by years of exposure to the elements. All the details are probably not necessary. (However, if you are truly fascinated by the painful process, you may talk with Tom Henning or Burrell Welton.) Our dilemma clearly centered on acting as good stewards for the Lord s money while preserving our beautiful, historical stained glass. Weeks and months passed, as the committee debated our options, researched stained glass restoration, and contacted providers for estimates. With the bids, came the startling realization that a lot of money would be required for the entire project close to $250,000. More soul searching followed. Our committee researched and in 2017 we pursued a grant from the Historical Society to fund Phase I of the project which was to include 2-12 X19 windows (D street & 4 th St.) and would cover 75% of the total cost. August 2017, our grant was denied. The Historical Society wanted us to hire an architect to supervise the restoration project. By the time a solution was agreed upon by both parties, it was too late to resubmit our grant application. Rather than postpone the project, the Trustee Committee elected to revisit Phase I to address restoration of the most damaged, vulnerable glass in the choir room on 4 th Street side of the church. A contract was then signed with Denver Art Glass, Inc. (as described above). Stained Glass Windows Update continued on pg. 7 6

Stained Glass Windows Update continued from pg. 6 Where we are going: We know that restoring all our windows in need is a longterm project. We will work with Denver Art Glass to prioritize future phases of this prayerful project. In October, we will submit another grant application to the Historical Society for funding of any restoration needs identified in Phase II of the restoration project, Our prayers are that the grant request will be awarded. We now have a much better understanding of their requirements along with our proven commitment to the project clearly demonstrated by our church s commitment to independently finance Phase 1 of our Windows Restoration Project. In the near future, you will receive detailed information as to how you can make a financial pledge to support the Windows Restoration Project. Please continue to pray and seek God s guidance in support for this ongoing restoration project. Romans 8:31 What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? Matthew 19:26 But all things are possible for God. Mark 11: 24 Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours. We are grateful for your continual support in this beautiful and historic project, The Windows Restoration Committee Once again, we are participating in the Salida Pregnancy Center s Baby Bottle Annual Fundraiser held from Mother s Day to Father s Day!
