Calob Rundell The Methodist Brand We live in a commercial culture of brands. Nike, Ford, Hershey, Wal-Mart, Coke, McDonald s, and Vail are brands; they are so much more than just the names of businesses. A brand is more than a label for a specific product or store. A brand is an experience, an image, and a lifestyle. Any salesperson worth their commission will tell you that they don t sell a product or a service, they sell a brand. Brands also engender loyalty. Think of the stuff you buy or where you buy it. Are there certain brands that you are loyal too? Are there companies or stores that you will go out of your way to give your money to? What is it about those brands that have earned your loyalty? In my own life, there are some brands that I am very loyal to; I have particular guitars I play, particular professional athletes I root for, and particular snowboards I ride. But, there is one particular brand that I am loyal to and passionate above more than any other: The United Methodist Church. Now, you may not think of the United Methodist Church as a brand. But it is. (You can also think of the larger calling to follow Jesus as a brand as well.) We, as the church, promote a lifestyle. We offer guidance and suggestion about how you allocate your time, money, and energy. There are distinctive 1 characteristics that make the Methodist brand. And as Methodists, we are invited and challenged to live into the best parts of being Methodist. As Methodists, our theology and our lives place a strong emphasis on grace and how grace operates. We believe strongly that God s love is freely and abundantly given to each person and to all of God s creation, and that there is nothing we do to earn it and nothing we can do to lose it. The founder of the Methodist movement, John Wesley, believed that it is the experience of grace so freely given to all us sinners that transforms our lives and warms our hearts. Grace is part of our brand. As we interact with our neighbors, coworkers, family members, and strangers that we meet, let us be agents of grace in all we do. Another part of the Methodist brand is being connected. We are a global church. In the United Methodist Church, we are directly tied to churches all over the United States and in countries such as Kenya, Philippines, and Germany. We are part of the efforts of this global church. Through the world wide work of the UMC, we support medical missionaries in Zimbabwe and we respond to disasters in Indonesia. As your pastor, I encourage you to learn more about our brand. Take the time to read the stories of what the church is doing around the world. And, commit your resources to being a part of the work the church is called to be engaged in. In particular, I point you towards two websites where Pastor Ponderings continued on pg. 2
2 Pastor Ponderings continued from pg. 1 you can learn more about our brand. At you can delve into the faith that drives us and makes us who we are. And then take some time to visit and go through the website of the United Methodist Committee on Relief, better known as UMCOR (pronounced like umm-core). This is the agency of the church that cares for victims of natural disasters, is committed to economic development with people experiencing poverty, and provides necessities for refugees. You can learn more about UMCOR, and give, at So as you wear you Nikes while you drive a Ford to go buy Hershey bars at Wal-Mart and sip your Coke from McDonald s on the way to Vail, be sure to also invest in a brand built on grace and service: The United Methodist Church. Peace, Calob pastor@salidaumc.org Heaven at 11:00 Join us each Wednesday at 11:00am in the Parlor for 20 minutes of Contemplative Prayer (Silence) Any questions please see Licia Iverson or Sherry Welton Faith Book Club Tuesday, September 15 th at 10:00AM in Century Hall. 3 Peaches, Peaches and More Peaches! By Lori Isenberger For Your Historical Interest & Amusement Dated April 7, 1896 Salida Mail The New M. E. Church Yesterday the writer looked over the architect's plans for the Methodist church to be located on that congregation s property on the corner of D and Fourth streets. The building is to be of brick with metal roof ad equipped with every modern convenience. The total cost will be about $6,000. The main audience room will seat 265 people in the pews, and the various annexes ad galleries which can be called into requisition at any time, will raise the total capacity to 500. The arrangement of the building is such as to furnish excellent accommodations for Sunday School classes, board meetings, etc. The finishing of the building will be in the latest and most beautiful designs of scroll and rafter work, the culminating point being the ceiling of the main audience room. A graceful tower will adorn the corner entrance and large handsome windows will be an especial feature of beauty. When complete it will be the finest church edifice in the state outside of the larger cities. The foundation and cellar work will be completed this season and work on the frames, scrolls, etc., for the finishing will begin in a few days. Next spring work will be begun on the walls and the building completed in a few weeks. The Men s Group will meet for Breakfast on Saturday, September 5 th, 2015 at 8:00 AM at the Patio Pancake Place. All men are invited to attend! Any questions please see Leon Stanton! Earlier in the summer, we learned that our Peach Guy, Harold Clay was retiring from the peach delivery business and while we do wish him well and thank him for his many years of service, you could hear a collective cry of, Oh No What will we do?? So the creative minds went to work and wa-la peaches were on again for our summer culinary pleasure! Thanks to Harold for referring us to another family member who could fill our orders. A very special thank you to Tom and Donna Henning, who volunteered to go pick up the peaches and bring them back to the church for pick-ups. And thank you to Judy Naviaux, once again, for coordinating the orders and being a peach of a gal to hold it all together. Peach Cobbler Anyone? The Church office will be closed on Monday, September 7 th Happy Labor Day! Our Next Church Council Meeting will be held on Tuesday, September 22 nd 10:00AM in Century Hall 3

5 This year, we faced many unknowns as we held our Pig Roast (annual fundraiser) during the same weekend as the music festival, Gentlemen of the Road, was going on in Salida. The good news is that the Pig Roast was still a success! We served about 400 plates of delicious barbeque dinners. The actual plate number was down about a hundred from last year, but sales of roast pork came close to making up the difference in income. A rough estimate of net profit for the event is $3500. We enjoyed the excellent music of The Rhythm Kings. Thank you to Van and Norma Ricketts for coordinating the Pig Roast again this year! Thank you to everyone for your willing participation and great support. Here are a few photos of this year s Roto Rooters who were out and about on Tuesday afternoon prior to the Pig Roast, as well as some photos from the actual event. A special thank you, to those who sold tickets to individuals and businesses and to the many people who contributed to the success of this event. SWEETNESS ALL AROUND You re invited to attend our Sundae Sunday Social on Sunday, September 27 th during Fellowship in Century Hall following Worship Look for the sign-up sheets in Century Hall to bring a sundae ingredient! Help us say a sweet & delicious Good-bye to summer. This event promises to be filled with Faith, Friendship & Fun! 5
6 HALLOWEEN GREETINGS FROM THE OUTREACH COMMITTEE!! Yes, it is a bit early for that, but we would like to get started on this project. It has been brought to our attention that some of us have so many Halloween trick-or-treaters that it is difficult to provide enough candy. And some of us don t get any at all. We propose a plan to bring these two together and, at the same time, introduce our church to new friends. If you attract many trick-or-treaters at all and would like some assistance in purchasing and distributing candy, please let us know. And, if you don t get any trick-or-treaters at all and would be willing to help those who do, please let us know. The Outreach Committee will provide labels for the bags of treats (only wrapped single-servings, please). The labels will identify that the items are provided by the members of our church, give contact information, worship and Sunday School times, etc. If you could add a bag of Halloween to your shopping list to help with this project, we would really appreciate it. We will designate a back table in Century Hall for your contributions. More information to come. If you have any questions about this project or the Outreach Committee in general, please see Sherry Welton (480) and sdwelton@hotmail.com Prayers, Praise & Celebration Thank you to all the folks who come to be with our faith community during the summer. We ALWAYS look forward to your arrival and most definitely are sad to see you go! We appreciate all the support you offer all of our programs, especially the summer programs such as the Raft Guide Dinners and our summer music program. Blessings on your journey and please know that Salida UMC welcomes you anytime you are near. See you next summer! Continued prayers requested for Rhonda Plinske s 22yr. old granddaughter, Shaylee Lyakhov. Shaylee was recently diagnosed with a serious case of dysplasia and they are very concerned about the possibility of uterine 6 cancer. Once they receive results of the biopsy a treatment course can be established. We give abundant gratitude for the continued increase of health and wellbeing of John Hogue. Please continue to pray for John and Wanda as John gets stronger every day and they make their plans to return to Texas. Please keep Judith Kinzie in your prayers as she recovers from surgery needed to repair her punctured colon. She is in CU Denver Medical Center and we re not sure how long she will need to be there. We will keep you posted as we get any updates. If you d like to send Judith a card, their home address is: Judith Kinzie 8015 CR 141 Salida, CO (Mark your calendars NOW!)
