Happy Valentine s Day! A day of sweet remembrance as we exchange love-greetings with partners, family, and friends. A day of vulnerability and humbleness as we trust the love we re offered. A day of boldness as we tell others of our love for them. A day of intentions to do better. A specific day when we focus on being loved and loving. Sort of reminds me of the last few weeks as we ve moved through the season of Advent, Christmas and, now, Epiphany. We have been reminded, once again, of the incredible love the Father has given unto us through the birth of Jesus and his life given for all. And we are amazed at and with that love so that we want to love back, and we want to pass that love on. So, Happy Valentine s Day. And, Happy Life and Love in Jesus s name! You ve got the love, all you ll ever need. Now, just give it away. Soon, like now, we re preparing and planning for the season of Lent which begins on Ash Wednesday, February 13 th. If you read through this newsletter you will see events and opportunities happening around worship, fellowship, and study throughout the weeks leading up to the celebration of Easter. Check them out and be a participant. I hope we will not just sort of trudge toward that great celebration, but that we ll take stock of our journey and, with intention, determine to live into and out of the many gifts we are given through our relationship with Jesus, whom we call The Christ. And the greatest of these is love. Let us determine to be more deeply involved in our own faith journey so that we can be more deeply involved in our vocation as God s people. People who communicate with each other. People who look to the needs and rights of others. People who are more concerned about BEING God s people than about protecting ourselves from those who may not think the way we do. People who are willing to -continued

ASH WEDNESDAY: FEBRUARY 13 FEBRUARY 13 TH 12:15 pm Worship & Bible Study 6:00 pm Supper (sign up to come or cook) 6:50 pm Bible Study 7:20 pm Worship The following Wednesdays during LENT 12:15 pm Worship & Bible Study 6:00 pm Supper (sign up to come or cook) 6:50 pm Bible Study & Worship LENT We will take a 40-day Lenten journey called, Marks of the Christian, a study of Romans 12. With an emphasis on prayer we will do the devotions at home, and then come together on Wednesdays to look at what we ve been learning/doing during the week and we will incorporate that into our Wednesday Worship. We will be pondering what we have and are empowered to be using the Romans text. Come, Ash Wednesday and beyond! + Christian Symbols + Ashes On Ash Wednesday, as Lent begins, worshipers foreheads are often marked with ashes in the sign of the cross. The ashes traditionally come from burning palm branches from the previous Palm Sunday. In Old Testament days, ashes were a sign of mourning and repentance. Today, some worshipers wipe off the ashes before leaving church, to symbolize being cleansed from sin by Jesus death; others wear the ashes the rest of the day, carrying the cross of Christ into the world. The speaking of Genesis 3:19 often accompanies the placement of ashes: You are dust, and to dust you shall return.
3 Pastor s Greeting cont. compromise and change when needed so that Christ s way--christ s life and concern and focus-- rather than our own (sometimes, selfish), is manifested wherever we are. Most of us grew up thinking of Lent as a time to give up something so that we are reminded that we are horrible creatures who need to be saved over and over again. Sorry, folks, giving up chocolate or energy drinks or smoking or drinking or something else we consider a sacrifice (notice, please: the things we choose to give up are usually those things that probably aren t good for us anyway) doesn t really cut it as far as sacrifice goes. So, I m challenging each one of you to TAKE ON SOMETHING. Instead of giving up something you shouldn t have/do anyway, take on something that you ve wanted to take on a class, a worship, a daily devotional, a volunteer task. Take on something that has to do with your relationship with Jesus and the walk you are taking with him. With intention, determine to do something in his name live a little more fully, love a little more lavishly. After all, that s what we re called to do as members of the community of Christ s followers. I know, determine to follow him even more closely, and on purpose. I ll bet you ll be amazed at what can come of it. In the meantime, know that you are loved and precious in God s sight, and so is the one next to you. In that knowledge we can change the world. Have at it, people of God. Have at it. Your sister in Christ Jesus, Pr Dawn April 5 th & 6 th 2013 Time to begin thinking about our Annual Church Rummage Sale. We will accept donations for the event beginning the Monday after Easter. Anything that is clean and in working order is accepted. If you have questions about donations or want to volunteer, contact Peggy Preston ( ). Parish Nurse Notes: Our Church has some medical equipment available to borrow such as walkers, canes, wheelchairs, etc. If you are in need, please contact Jeannette Thorpe, or Peggy Preston, February 3 rd How the Boy Scouts came to America In 1909, Chicago publisher William Dickson Boyce was visiting London. Late one afternoon the city was enshrouded in heavy fog. Boyce lost his bearings in the murk and was approached by a boy of about 12 carrying a lantern. The boy offered to guide Boyce to the address he was seeking. When Boyce produced a shilling, the boy replied, "No, sir, I am a scout. Scouts do not accept tips for good turns." That comment piqued Boyce's curiosity. He wanted to learn more about scouting in Britain, so the boy took him to the British Scout headquarters. He was so enthralled with what he heard there, that he decided to get scouting started in America. Churches with a Scout troop, whether for boys or girls, are blessed by the troop's presence. They perform valuable service projects, learn and practice good values, health and survival techniques, discipline, and helpfulness toward others. Let us offer scouts our gratitude when we see them helping the handicapped, assisting the elderly, directing the flow of church traffic, repairing or painting church property, and assisting us in many and various ways. We all benefit by their presence.

I just want to say thank you for the continual blessing everyone at Faith is to me. I have greatly enjoyed the experiences I have been gaining here. Although at times my presence is a little scarce, I am always greeted so warmly. I have to say this job is truly, a joy! FLY is looking forward to an exciting year, and we are currently planning for all the fun activities, service projects and fundraisers we will be doing. In January(or soon after) we will be launching our fundraiser called 144 Envelopes which will allow any in the church who wish to participate the chance to take any one or more, of these envelopes labeled with numbers and return it with the amount of money listed on the front. We learned about this type of activity from other churches in our Lutheran circle. We hope many of you will feel excited to participate and give what you can. In February we are looking forward to our Super Bowl Subs fundraiser and Shrove Tuesday Pancake Dinner. We hope to see all of you involved in any ways you can. Just a reminder, FLY is always HAPPY to volunteer!!! We are always looking for ways to help out those in our church family, as well as in the community. If you have any ideas or a job that needs done, please contact me. I will do my best to keep regular updates available, but please don t hesitate to call or me with any questions or concerns. If any of you would like to be involved in anyway, be it hanging out on a Sunday evening with us, making a meal for the group, or just sharing in a meal with us, we would absolutely welcome and appreciate that. Please be in contact. Thank you so much for your continued spiritual and financial support, and I look forward to all the adventures that this New Year will bring to Faith Lutheran and its youth!
