What resources we have are stretched more than ever. Our money, our time, our talents/gifts are all needed somewhere: home, school, work and even, church. Sometimes it seems like the need is too great and the resources too few. And sometimes it seems like the same few people are doing most of the volunteering, and giving; doing most of the work. And a good percentage of these people are retired, which figures since retired people maybe have a bit more time to give. But that doesn t let anyone off the hook, so to speak. (BTW, I ll never retire. Most of the retired folks I know are busier now than they ever were during their earning years!) We heard a bit of AHH s story and did a little planning for the upcoming 6 th Annual Home for the Holidays Thanksgiving Eve dinner (of which you will hear more) sponsored by AHH. It was so good to be a part of a gathering of people from many different denominations working together to help fill a common need. We also shared some of the joys and frustrations around the idea of volunteerism. You see, it can be difficult to figure out just how to encourage more people to take part in the volunteer opportunities that surround us. There were two comments that really touched me during our discussions. The first was when we were talking about how good it is to see so many varying churches working together, and how it can be difficult to get some pastors/people to give up their exclusive hold on theological matters. It seems that everyone needs to remember that, as one pastor said, We all serve the same God. Yup, this is most certainly true. The other comment came when we were talking about volunteers. That was when one Pastor commented that he was preaching on helping those in need. He said, We are not volunteers, we are the BAPTIZED. For us, as Christ s disciples, there is not the option to volunteer or not. It s our job. -continued

Our enrollment is good (we are almost full on Wednesdays) and our class is a very fun and energetic one. 4 Pastor s Message - cont. The ELCA says it this way: God s work. Our hands. Faith Lutheran Church here in Albany says, Living in God s grace, we SHARE the love of Jesus with all. (FLC s Mission Statement). Oh, and Jesus mentions things like loving one s neighbor, and taking care of widows and orphans (but not only them). And then there s the one about going, therefore, into all the world, baptizing and teaching everything I have taught you. Oh, and I ll be with you all the way. So, how do you see yourself as one of God s beloved people? Are you a volunteer, or are you a baptized worker in that ripe-for-picking field/vineyard? It s a change in attitude, you know. And as each of us grows more and more into the mind of Christ, the more we will find that we have time enough to do what we need to do. We have financial resources that meet our needs, and we have more and more of those gifts of the Spirit that Paul mentions: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Gal. 5:22-23). It s how we work out our own salvation... We ve been given the gift of grace/salvation/being born again from above and it s our task to explore how that affects our faith walk. Jesus said, I came to give life and give it abundantly. Personally, I want to live that life and live it abundantly. And as I continue to learn to live out of that new life; as I continue to work out what salvation means in my life, I find I have more of my needs met. In particular love, joy, and peace, and some of the others (patience is lagging behind a bit sometimes). How about you? Here at Faith Lutheran Church, let s determine to continue to be intentional about allowing the mind of Christ be among us, let s continue to allow the Holy Spirit to work in and among us. We are the light of the world, you know. Let s be eager to let our light so shine all around us. Go work in the vineyard/field: it will change your life and the lives of those around you. Your baptized sister in Christ, Pastor Dawn Seeking Assistants Harp --- This multi-stringed musical instrument is associated with David, who played to soothe King Saul, and later wrote many psalms. The harp also represents praise music in general, as well as all the instruments people use to glorify God (see Psalm71:22). The idea that angels play harps comes from Revelation 14:2 ( And I heard a voice from heaven like the sound of harpists playing on their harps ). CHRISTIAN SYMBOL Seeking worship assistants for Sunday services. Share your talents! Volunteers are needed to assist as ushers, acolytes, readers, pastor's assistants, and sound technicians. The school kit drive is complete and 75 school kits have been packed and will be blessed on October 9 th along with the quilts we will be sending for Lutheran World Relief. It costs $1.40 to deliver a school kit to those in need. This cost of $105 will be covered through funds gained by saving the MEGA Foods sales slips. We continue to save those slips all year around so we have the funds to carry out projects such as this. Extra supplies that were received will be donated to the preschool and the local school district for distribution.

7 Annual Evangelism & Mission Event Reformation Sunday, on October 30 th, has been chosen as the time for our annual Evangelism & Mission Event. Following the service everyone may participate in the celebration and the meal that will follow. We are going to focus on our missionaries, Shedd and Kris Waskosky, Bible Translators, who are working on a Bible project in Ecuador. We plan to be able to learn firsthand about this project, from the missionaries and those who are helping them with the translation. Steve and Shirley Gilbreath, members here at Faith, are planning to go to the village and meet some of the people in person in early October. Shirley is a native of Ecuador and is helping us create an authentic Ecuadorian meal. The menu sounds wonderful and it will be a meal you won t want to miss. Mark your calendar October 30 th Plan to spend the morning --- worship, Sunday school, and a meal. It ll be a fiesta you won t want to miss!
