Grand Knight Notes September COUNCIL 6016 Knights: September is upon us and the OLPH Parish BBQ Fiesta starts in just a few days on the 18 th, 19 th and 20th. I encourage our Brother Knights to do their best by volunteering their time during the BBQ at the beer/wine booth, the hamburger/hot dog booth, and the Knights 50/50 drawing. This is one of the few times in the year that we benefit Council 6016 Knights for recruiting and service and help the parish Church monetarily. We will conduct another First Degree Ceremony at OLPH in October, so call your friends and family and get a new Knight in the Council. We need younger members active with the organization and the Council. October is also a major recruiting month and we will do our best to advertise recruiting in Council We have a Pancake breakfast scheduled for October 18 th which Scott Franklin is overseeing. Please help out and be sure to let Scott know you will be there. On August 28 th, Dave Robbins (PGK) and Knights from the other Councils and the Fourth Degree Color Corps had a special ceremony at OLPH School to present new flags for the school. Thanks to Dave and to the brothers and the Color Corps, it was a great ceremony and a great example to our Catholic School children what the Knights do in the Parish. We have planned other programs and activities over October, November and December open to men in the Parish and will conduct more activities with the School. The Columbiettes will be meeting to discuss fund-raising for the Knights (bake sales, etc.) in the next few weeks. Please encourage your spouse to participate and meet the other wives in Council They will consider suggestions for bake sales, and other K of C wives activities in the coming 2009/2010 year. Please call Sandy Brush for more information ( ). I have a number of member shirts (more than 10) waiting for pick-up or distribution. See the list of names who have not received their shirts in this issue. If you did NOT receive a green Council 6016 shirt after your first degree initiation, please call me ( ) and the Council will get you one. 4 Spiritual Reflection Caritas in Veritate (Charity in Truth) Page 4 The August issue of Columbia features some of the contents of Pope Benedict XVI s new encyclical, Charity in Truth, illuminating the great commandments of love. The Pope introduces the encyclical with "Charity is at the heart of the Church s social doctrine. The Supreme Knight Carl Anderson states We should take stock of how everything we do affects others. In fact, to be a Christian is to be a man or woman for others. If you have not read the August edition of Columbia please do so. The issue is devoted to the extraordinary contributions of the Catholic Church in the areas of health care, social service, education and religious freedom. The Knights of Columbus are an integral part of the Church s efforts to alleviate conditions of social injustice, poverty and religious freedom. Fr. McGivney founded the Knights of Columbus to aid each other in time of sickness, to provide for decent burial, and to render pecuniary assistance to the families of deceased members. While the activities and charities of the Knights of Columbus have grown beyond the original focus, our call as Knights and Catholics continues to be of service to those most in need of spiritual and material assistance. Just as the Supreme Knight states:..to be a Christian is to be a man or woman for others. During the month of September, the Church celebrates the lives of two such persons who indeed were men for others. On September 27 th, the Church remembers the Apostle of the Poor, St. Vincent de Paul. On September 9 th, we have the remembrance of Blessed Frederic Ozanam ( ). Blessed Frederic is the founder of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. He chose St. Vincent de Paul as the patron of the Society to imitate the example of that great Saint. Many books have been written about these two men who have lived the spiritual and corporal beatitudes to the fullest: one as priest, the other as a married man. Both brought compassion, comfort and the love of God to the poor and needy of their time. Both lived during revolutionary periods when the people suffered greatly from economic and social problems. Both men dedicated their lives to alleviate hunger, illness and brought the comfort of God s love for them into their homes. In these difficult economic times, we truly need to take stock and look at ourselves and ask the question of how we affect others and to what extent we carry out the call of the beatitudes. How do we look at some of the social problems facing our nation and state? How do we apply the social teaching of our Church or do we apply secular views to make our judgments? Do we, as Knights, represent what our faith calls for us to do or are we following the path of political correctness? How do we respond to the poor and needy? Let us take stock: Do I help the poor by direct assistance? Do I help the poor by donating to the cause? Do I help the poor by praying for them? Whatever you do for the least of my brothers, you do for me (Mt. 25: 40)

KNIGHTS ANCHOR THEIR VALUES ON CHRIST Page 5 Flavy R. Pagador Advocate and Former DGK K of C Council 6016 Members of the Knights of Columbus are expected to live and anchor their values on Christ. We have heard the life of St. Francis of Assisi: his life of poverty, of detachment from worldly life, of humility and love for others and even to God s lowest creatures. All of us are called to accept the teachings of Christ and anchor our values on his. Values are described as the norms, goals or purposes that one chooses to give a sense of direction and meaning to one s life. In my case, I do not aspire to become rich but just live a simple life and I believe that "contentment in life is a matter of enjoying what is at hand and losing all desire for things beyond our reach." I love the poor because I am one of them. My brothers, what are the values preached by Christ? Do you ask yourself, "What is my attitude in life? What are the values that govern my life? If we read the life of Christ as narrated in the Holy Gospels, we will find out that his is the most amiable, the most attractive and the most wonderful personality that ever existed in the world. Wherever he went people were attracted to Him. Christ personified in Himself all the virtues and values that he was preaching to the people. From his birth in Bethlehem to his death in Calvary, Christ was constantly living and preaching the values of poverty, detachment, humility, obedience to the Father in heaven, and charity to each and everyone who came to him in need. In the Sermon on the Mount as well as at the Last Supper, Jesus projected in a very special way, the principal values that He wants us to observe in life. In the Sermon on the Mount, He taught us how to be blessed or be happy, but in the ways that are diametrically opposed to the ways of the world. The world principles are largely materialistic that cater to the demands of the body. What is life, if not for pleasure? If you challenge these values and principles of the world, you become unpopular and an outcast. That s why the Saints were considered "fools" in the eyes of the world because they did not want to conform to the materialistic values around them. Flavy Pagador (To be continued in the next issue)

Why did you become a Knight? Concluded Page 6 Over the last two months I have been bringing you stories of why some of your fellow Knights became choose to be a Knight and how they came to join. Here are some of their stories. Tony Cota Last summer when the volunteer list was going around for the parish's annual BBQ, I signed up for one of the refreshment booths. When I was working the booth, I was approached by fellow knights and they explained to me what a wonderful organization that provides charity work for the parish and community. These gentlemen inspired me. For so long I have wanted to be part of a organization that consistently provides charitable services for the church and community. These people I look up to and to be part of the Knights definitely gives me a sense of purpose in our parish. Being part of community organizations and causes are what all decent citizens should take part of. When time allows, I plan on further involvement with the Knights of Columbus and other charities/causes. Since my almost 1 year in The Knights, I feel that I have grown personally and spiritually. I feel that my family has noticed the change too! Dave Robbins I was one of those people who went to Church on Sundays and Easter, Christmas, etc. I had seen some of the Knights around the Church and at functions such as the fiesta. I didn't know too much about them other than they helped around the Church. I had been retired a couple of years and wanted to start doing some type of volunteer work and thought that giving something back to the Church would be a good way to go. I had not really figured out what to do but one day when I was coming out of mass and the Knights had a table set up by the garage and were recruiting members. My wife told me that here was my chance to start doing something so I went over to the table and met a couple of the Knights. They started telling me about the numerous activities they were involved with that aided the Church and community and I told myself now is the time to get involved. I filled out an application and the next thing I knew I was going through the First Degree exemplification. After I became a member I really had an appreciation what an outstanding group of men the Knights are and that their dedication to helping others brought a deep spiritual satisfaction to me. Gary Gutierrez I joined the knights because I listened to my heart... Have you volunteered to work a Council Event? Have you asked the question of anyone lately? When you are working a event, it is very easy to ask someone Would you like to join the Knights of Columbus?. Consider helping this year at one of the three booths at the BBQ that the Knights are hosting. Think of the tremendous amount of good we can do by doubling our council size this year. This can happen if we talk to the men at the Parish Fiesta BBQ. The Holy Spirit will guide you if you listen with your heart. A new fellow Knight could be standing right next to you.

First Degree Ceremony Page 9 Our Council has been successfully providing opportunities to have a First Degree Ceremony on a consistent basis. At OLPH on August 12, 2009 we had a First Degree Ceremony. All three councils in the Santa Clarita Valley had new members join the Knights as First Degree members. We had two more men join our council s ranks as Knights that evening. Please welcome Bill Happick and Steve Hoebink, our newest members! 10 Page 10 Healthcare Reform? What should I think of it or do about it? No recent issue has caused as much controversy, discussion and misunderstanding as the proposed healthcare reform. There are a multitude of groups and entities from various sectors who want to influence the people and advance their own interests as the debate progresses. There is much at stake for many and yet, there is so much misinformation circulating that hardly anyone truly knows all that the reform legislation includes. As Knights of Columbus we have the benefit of our organization and as Catholics, we have the position of the US Catholic Bishops Conference who can guide us and provide us with the Social Teaching of our Church. To no one s surprise is the fact that the Knights position parallels the position of the Bishops. At the 127 th Supreme Convention in Phoenix in early August this year, the Knights of Columbus passed a resolution declaring opposition to any health care reform legislation that does not explicitly exclude abortion coverage for any health insurance plan, public, or private. The resolution also called on legislators everywhere to adopt legislation protecting the religious conscience rights of doctors, nurses and other medical professionals, guaranteeing their right to refuse to participate in abortion, euthanasia, assisted suicide or any other practice that is destructive of innocent human life or that conflicts with their sincerely held religious beliefs. While the Bishops Conference position does not differ from the Knights of Columbus, their wording is somewhat different. The following is from their August 14 th USCCB publication on Healthcare: For many years, and especially over the last several months, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has advocated for decent, affordable, accessible health care for all. Now the current and much needed national health care dialogue is being buried an avalanche of ideological combat, misinformation, partisan positioning and public anger and confusion. In the middle of this debate the Catholic community has a unique perspective. Our teaching insists health care is a right and shouldn't depend on where your parents work, where you live or when you got here. Our tradition insists the moral measure of health care reform is how it touches the weak and vulnerable, babies in their mother s womb and the very sick and old at the end of life, those without access and power. The Catholic community provides health care to millions in our hospitals, clinics and nursing homes. The Church purchases a lot of health care coverage for our employees in our parishes, schools, charities and health care institutions. And the Catholic community picks up the pieces of a failing health care system in our emergency rooms, shelters, schools and parishes. The families and people without health care coverage are not abstractions for us we see them every day and see how their lives and dignity are threatened. This is why our strong, clear and united Catholic voice is needed in the health care debate more than ever. We need to bring our principles and priorities to help get this debate back to basics. It is not right that more than 45 million of our neighbors have no health care coverage. It is wrong, morally wrong. We can and must do better in using the remarkable health care capacity and resources of our nation to serve all our residents. And we should begin with the principle that the purpose of health care reform is to protect and enhance the life and dignity of all. (Continued on page 11)

Page 11 The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops: 1. Supports universal health coverage which protects the life and dignity of all, especially those who are poor and vulnerable. Because Catholic teaching insists that basic health care is a right and is essential to protect human life and dignity, genuine health care reform which protects human life and advances universal coverage is a moral imperative and urgent national priority. For us, universal coverage should be truly universal, assuring decent health care for all from conception to natural death. 2. Opposes any efforts to expand abortion funding, mandate abortion coverage, or endanger the conscience rights of health care providers and religious institutions. Longstanding and widely supported current policies on these issues must be preserved. We urge members of the House and Senate to take all steps necessary to oppose abortion funding, mandated abortion coverage or weakening of conscience rights. 3. Supports effective measures to safeguard the health of immigrants, their children and all of society by expanding eligibility for public programs, such as Medicaid, to all low income families and vulnerable people and by offering adequate subsidies for cost sharing of insurance premiums and out of pocket expenses. Congress is now in recess and will not return until September 8 th. Now is the time to let your Representative and Senators know how you feel. As you may have seen on the news, some of the Town Hall meetings have been very challenging to the respective Congress person. It is indeed important that they know how their constituents feel and your voice should be heard! Take the time to let them know how you feel about their proposed legislation and what conditions you think they should include or exclude! 12 A Grand Event The Past Grand Knight Dinner Page 12 Our worthy Grand Knight Jim Brush, organized a wonderful event to recognize two of our Past Grand Knights, Al Taylor and Dave Robbins. The event was held at Mulligan s Restaurant. The food, service, and atmosphere were perfect for our event. There was no need for a do over or mulligan. Many fellow Knights and their wife s were in attendance. Dave and Al were both presented with pens, and sporty jackets as tokens of appreciation for their work as Grand Knights of our Council. Dave & Nina Robbins Al & Brenda Taylor Dave said the jacket would be very helpful on the brisk mornings outside the garage after mass. Al Taylor was surprised at the event. He was under the impression he was there to honor Dave. Al was moved by the thoughtfulness of his fellow knights. Others in attendance were: Colleen & Bob Mulbrecht, Marlene & Jack O Shea Sandy Brush Tony & Scott Franklin
