1 First Presbyterian Church A community serving and worshipping Jesus Christ our Lord Member: ECO A Covenant Order of Evangelical Presbyterians Website: firstpresc@gmail.com Phone: (760) January 2017 And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age. (Matthew 28: 20) Peter Kennedy (Pastor at New Venture Christian Fellowship) tells the story of British astronomer Dr. Fred Hoyle, an atheist and Darwinist After years of study and observation, he came to the understanding that there was a high structure and order in the universe. He concluded that there was a guiding hand in the universe and it left him "greatly shaken." It was Dr. Hoyle who coined the term Big Bang Theory, a theory he dismissed. A common sense interpretation of the facts suggests that a superintellect has monkeyed with physics, he exclaimed. As Dr. Hoyle saw it, the beginning of the universe was not a Big Bang chaotic explosion, but rather a very highly ordered event, one that could not have occurred by random chance. He stated, "the probability of life originating at random is so utterly miniscule as to make the random concept absurd." It was Dr. Hoyle who compared the random emergence of even the simplest cell to the likelihood that "a tornado sweeping through a junk-yard might assemble a Boeing 747 from the materials therein. The simplest of life forms is far more complex than we can comprehend. Billy Graham puts it this way, "The world is not here by chance, nor is human life a biological accident. God brought it all into existence." Here is an amazing thought The God of all creation, our God, who brought it all into existence, is the same God that promises us, I am with your always, to the end of the age. As we move into a New Year, God is with you. No matter what 2017 has in store for us, God is with us. In the challenges and hurts of life, God is with you. In the joys and celebrations of life, God is with you. and behold, I am with you always. Session would like to hear your ideas. Perhaps the Holy Spirit is leading you to help in one of the following ministries: 1. Bishop Care Center: We usually go on the 4th Monday of each month to visit the residents and host a sing-along time. 2. Bible Studies: We have many Bible Studies from which to choose. Check the calendar for times and places or call the church office (760) Would you like to help with the Children s Ministries of Kid s Club Sunday School, occasional help in the Nursery on Sunday or either of our Youth Group nights? 4. Prepare food for our monthly Share Your Blessings dinner or for the fellowship table?
3 3 LIBRARY NEWS Many of us like to start the New Year with a new devotional. Here are a few suggestions: The One Year Bible - This gives an Old Testament reading, a New Testament Reading, a Psalm and one chapter of Proverbs for each day. The One Year New Testament Devotional - This gives a New Testament reading and a short commentary on the reading plus a chapter in Proverbs for each day. Magnificent Prayer, 366 Devotions - By Nick Harrison, this is a daily devotional with an emphasis on prayer. This gives a verse and commentary by different well known Christians, such as Corrie Ten Boom, John Wesley and many others. The Daily Walk Chronological Bible - This is the same Bible we used as a church family a couple of years ago, but set up in the order in which events occurred. This one starts with commentary and then gives a reading for each day as you move through the Bible. The next three are classics with shorter daily readings. I think these should be in everyone s library. My Utmost for His Highest - By Oswald Chambers, this gives one or two verses to read with commentary. Excellent deep thoughts. Streams in the Desert - By Mrs. Charles E. Cowman, this one gives one verse with commentary for each day. This is also very rich in thoughts out of her experiences and heartbreak as a missionary in China and Japan. Spurgeon s Morning and Evening - By Charles H. Spurgeon, this also gives one verse a day with commentary. Excellent theological insight and warm pastoral concern. Please let me know of any books you would like in the library. There is a little money given to the library. I am putting the books for the month on the little table in the library area for you to look at and see if they may be of interest to you. Anne Sutherland, Librarian

5 5 Eastern Sierra Women s Retreat January 28, 2017 The time for the 10th Annual Eastern Sierra Women s Retreat has arrived. We are excited for this opportunity of fellowship and worship to the women in our area. Every year the Lord has blessed over women representing 20+ different churches with a special message. This year we are proud to announce our speaker is Vicki Smith. She is a gifted an dynamic Christian speaker sharing God s guide for us for Happiness. The theme this year is How to Be Happy No Matter What! Happiness awaits as we study the Book of Philippians with Vicki. Our worship team this year will be Mary Lou and Angela Enriquez from the River Church. We encourage each and every church to partake in the preparation and decision making of the Eastern Sierra Women s Retreat. Please don t hesitate to contact us if your church wants to participate this next coming year. All suggestions are openly accepted. Our focus is unity in the community and without the help of everyone the retreat would not be a success. This is a one-day retreat, scheduled on January 28, 2017 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The retreat will be held at the Calvary Baptist Church on Line Street in Bishop. Cost is $35, which includes lunch. Scholarships are available.
