1 Tidings Emory United Methodist Pastor Taysie Phillips 1600 Emory Road, Upperco, MD 21155, Office Pastor s taysie5@comcast.net Pastor s Phone: (C) July & August, 2016 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK Bishop Cho of the Virginia Area UMC gave an inspiring message to us at our Baltimore Washington Annual Conference in June. He spoke eloquently and passionately of the need to return to our roots as Wesleyans, as Methodists. More Holy Spirit! More prayer! he emphasized. He went on to say things like, No spiritual vitality no congregational vitality. Spiritual life is the kingpin that holds ministry together. It is not about more or better missionary programs Not better methods, but better people. The first step, he said, in order to re-discover that spiritual vitality, is prayer. Prayer is the essence and foundation of our faith. Being a Christian is more than becoming a good person. It is more than a culture. Being a Christian means having a relationship with a living God Faith as knowledge needs to be transformed into faith as relationship. Reminds me of Job 42:5 (in the unique words of Eugene Peterson s The Message Bible): Job said to God, I admit I once lived by rumors of you; now I have it all firsthand from my own eyes and ears! This was Job s response, after God spoke to him out of the tornado. God had gotten Job s attention by making his very life a

2 tornadic mess! But Job learned that he had had knowledge of and about God, but did not have a relationship with God. God wanted Job to see hear and know God for himself. And God desires that each of us see hear and know God for ourselves. Prayer! Was there anyone who ever lived who needed prayer less than our Lord Jesus, the Son of God? Yet we so often see in our Bible Jesus going off to pray by himself! It is through prayer that we learn of God. It is through prayer that we come to know God intimately. It is through prayer that we plug into the Source of our Power. It is through prayer that we become transformed into the likeness of God that God always intended us to be. Bishop Cho went on to challenge us to spend at least an hour a day in prayer. Would you take that challenge? We do indeed learn to pray by praying! We can learn about the ocean from books and maps, but in order to experience the ocean one really has to stand on the beach, hear the waves with your ears, feel the warm sand under your feet, see the sea gulls and white caps of frothy waves. It is only really then that you experience the enormity, the passion and the power, of the ocean. We all experience God in the same way not just with our minds, but with our whole beings. Blessings! Prayer Chain: The Council on Ministries has decided to start up the prayer chain once again. We need volunteers that text message and ones that do not but are willing to phone call. If you would like inform one other person of a request for prayer, please notify Karon or the church of your willingness to participate. This is the way it will work. Any person requesting prayers of the church will be asked personally to contact the Prayer Chain Leader. The Leader will contact several people by text or phone and each of these people will be assigned another person to call. It s that easy! Dear Emory Family, We want to thank you from the bottom of our hearts, for all of the love, prayers, and support you have given us through Cade s diagnosis, surgery, chemotherapy and recovery over the past 2 months and into the next 5-7months. AS YOU PROBABLY KNOW Melvin & Ruby Fair have moved to an elder care facility in Pasadena. Ruby likes it there and adjusting very well. She is excited that she no longer has to clean and cook meals, & she raves about the food. Melvin has pneumonia so they are keeping watch on him and making sure that he takes all of his medicine. He doesn t realize that he is staying there permanently he thinks that he is in the hospital & when he gets better he can come back home. 6 Wednesday Night at the is an informal service at 7pm on all Wednesday evenings during the summer, it can be as long or as short as you want. We are in need of someone to help lead the services. Some of our future leaders are: Ruthie Bradford, Dianne Baughan, Randy Wineke, Karon Moore, these are just a few, there will be others as well. To sign up for a Wed. call Sherry, Ruthie, or notify the office. The church will be having their picnic after church on July 24, 2016 at the church, under the pavilion. Bunch will be on Tuesday, July 26 th at noon at Olive Garden in Westminster & on Tuesday, August 30 th at Staples in Westminster. If you wish to go, see or call Jane Alban. On August 28, 2016 we are going to Longview Nursing Home. We will meet at the church at 1:30pm. Please join us for a 4 th of July picnic. It will be at Bob & Ruthie Bradford s house from 2pm on.
