Anointing of the Sick: If you are entering the hospital for a scheduled surgery and wish to celebrate this sacrament prior to your hospitalization, please contact Dorothy. If you would like Fr. Bob to visit you during your hospital stay, leave word upon entry as a patient. Speaking to his followers, Jesus tells them of the influence they are meant to have. Like the seasoning that gives food its flavor, they are to be "the salt of the earth" and like a lamp on a lampstand that "gives light to all in the house." Clearly, their influence on the people around them is meant to be positive and substantial. But what is the source of this irreplaceable influence? Elsewhere in the Gospels, Jesus declares that HE is "the light of the world" (cf. Jn 8:12). So when he tells his disciples that "your light must shine before others," he is speaking about the light that comes from following him, from believing in him, from living their lives for him and with him. The light of Christ brightens the world, showing us the truth and meaning of our existence. And to the extent that we have that light in our hearts, it naturally spreads out to impact those around us. So, today we must ask ourselves whether or not we are shining the way we are meant to as Christians. Do we brighten up our families, our workplaces, our neighborhoods, and our parishes? Are people encouraged, inspired, edified, and supported by our presence? Do we bring the kind of flavor that enriches life with a taste of the authentic truth, beauty, and goodness that comes from God alone? Or have we become a bit bland, like salt that "loses its taste" or light that is hidden "under a bushel basket"? It's important to be on guard against any tendency to let our faith be reduced to a mere routine or ritual. Rather, when we nurture our faith to be a living force that defines us and our actions, it will be a source of joy and renewal not only for us, but for the whole world. The saints who have gone before us are examples of how we are to live out this call of the Gospel daily and one of those saints that was salt and light in the world was St. John Bosco. He was a beloved 19th century Italian priest who sought out the homeless youth of Turin to help them have a better life. Couples Preparing to Celebrate the Sacrament of Marriage In the Diocese of LaCrosse (as in all the dioceses in Wisconsin), one expectation is a couple's participation in a diocesan marriage preparation retreat. The diocesan retreat entitled, Married Love: Two Becoming One would be completed 4-6 months before the celebration of the sacrament. Good New Project is looking for Volunteers Good News Project is looking for volunteers to help the cleanup efforts in North Carolina. Hurricane Matthew left many people without homes, and Lumberton, NC was hardest hit. In response to the enormous need for help, Good News Project has organized two weeks worth of service trips to repair homes March Applications are now being accepted for either one or two week service trips (dates run March 19-April 1). 5 Bible Study Join Fr Dan in the study of Holy Scriptures. The class will focus upon the many prophecies Christ fulfilled in the Old Testament. Please bring your Bible. Classes will meet for one hour every Thursday evening in the Angelorum at St Matthew at 5:00pm. Classes to begin February 9th and continue until April 6th. Life in the Spirit Seminar This seminar is a series of teachings and reflections on how to draw closer to God, how to recognize and be open to the workings of the Holy Spirit, and how to deepen our prayer and faith life. Join us as we lift up our hearts and our minds to God, and experience the very personal touch of His Spirit. SHARE SUNDAY Next weekend, February 11th & 12th, will be Share Sunday at all Masses A large basket will be placed in the sanctuary, following the petitions, Father will invite you to come forward and place your donations in the basket. If you are not comfortable coming forward, there will also be a basket in the transition space, by the ushers, that you may place your donations in before Mass. This basket will be carried forward in the Offertory procession. Monetary gifts are also welcome, they are used to purchase items that are needed and not in the pantry. What is Blue Knights Boys' Club? Blue Knights Boys' Club is a boys' club aimed at teaching the truths of the Catholic faith to boys through Scripture, saints' biographies, games, crafts and the Catechism of the Catholic Church. Each of the first four years' manuals contains nine virtues or points of faith, activities, saints' biographies as well as suggested talks, craft ideas and game suggestions. The program will eventually cover six-years for boys ages 5 and up. Written by a Marine, Major Dan McGuire, the program is designed to be led by men for boys. The Leader's Manuals for each year contain everything the busy dad needs to start and run his own Blue Knights Boys' Club The Member's Guides contain the list of activities, saints biographies, pictures and prayers. The Club is specifically designed with the busy dad in mind. Well-thought-out talks on the virtues, games to keep active boys focused, and tips on working with boys are all included in the Leader's Manuals. Please consider being God s hands and feet.
