5 Call to Action Reading 1 Kings 19:1-15a Reader A Reading from the First Book of Kings. Ahab told Jezebel that all the prophets except for Elijah had been killed. Jezebel sent a message to Elijah that said, That s what I m going to do to you by this time tomorrow. Elijah fled for his life. Going into the wilderness, he crawled under a broom tree. He prayed to God and said, I m done, God. Just let me die, because I am worthless. He fell asleep under the tree. An angel woke him up and said, You d better get up and eat something or you won t be able to go on. Elijah turned to see a cake and water right there next to him. So he got up and ate and drank. God s angel came a second time, touched him, and said, Get up and eat, you need your strength for the journey ahead of you. He got up, and ate and drank. It took him forty days and nights to get to Horeb, where he expected to talk to God. He spent the night in a cave. Then the word of God came to him, saying, What are you doing here, Elijah? He answered, Well, as you know, I ve worked hard for you, God. But the people aren t listening and they even want to kill me. I don t know what to do. Elijah got a message that he should stand on the mountain, because God was about to pass by. The wind kicked up, and it was so strong it was breaking rocks into pieces. God was not in the wind. Then there was an earthquake, but God wasn t in the earthquake. And then a fire, but God wasn t in the fire. Then it was dead silent. When Elijah heard that silence, he put his coat over his face and went to the entrance of the cave. A voice said, Tell me now, Elijah. What are you doing here? He answered, Well, as you know I ve worked hard for you, God. But the people aren t listening and they even want to kill me. I just don t know what to do. God said to him, Go. Go home a different way. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Reflection The Rev. Deacon Hershey Mallette Stephens Priest for Membership and Hospitality Collect Almighty God, in your Word you have given us a vision of that holy City to which the nations of the world bring their glory: Behold and visit, we pray, the cities of the earth. Renew the ties of mutual regard which form our civic life. Send us honest and able leaders. Enable us to eliminate poverty, prejudice, and oppression, that peace may prevail with righteousness, and justice with order, and that all people from different cultures and with differing talents may find with one another the fulfillment of their humanity; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Moment of Silence 5
6 Reading Psalm 42:1-3, Reader Let us read Psalm 42 responsively by whole verse. As the deer longs for the water-brooks, * so longs my soul for you, O God. All My soul is athirst for God, athirst for the living God; * when shall I come to appear before the presence of God? Reader My tears have been my food day and night, * while all day long they say to me, Where now is your God? All I will say to the God of my strength, Why have you forgotten me? * and why do I go so heavily while the enemy oppresses me? Reader While my bones are being broken, * my enemies mock me to my face; All day long they mock me * and say to me, Where now is your God? All Why are you so full of heaviness, O my soul? * and why are you so disquieted within me? Reader Put your trust in God; * for I will yet give thanks to him, who is the help of my countenance, and my God. Reflection The Rev. Deacon Eva Suarez Diocese of Washington Collect O God, you have bound us together in a common life. Help us, in the midst of our struggles for justice and truth, to confront one another without hatred or bitterness, and to work together with mutual forbearance and respect; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Moment of Silence 6
7 Reading Galatians 3:23-29 Reader A Reading from the Letter of Paul to the Galatians. Now before faith came, we were imprisoned and guarded under the law until faith would be revealed. Therefore the law was our disciplinarian until Christ came, so that we might be justified by faith. But now that faith has come, we are no longer subject to a disciplinarian, for in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith. As many of you as were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. There is no longer Jew or Greek, there is no longer slave or free, there is no longer male and female; for all of you are one in Christ Jesus. And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham s offspring, heirs according to the promise. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Reflection The Rev. Winnie Varghese Priest and Director of Justice and Reconciliation Collect Gracious Creator, we pray for thy holy Catholic Church. Fill it with all truth, in all truth with all peace. Where it is corrupt, purify it; where it is in error, direct it; where in any thing it is amiss, reform it. Where it is right, strengthen it; where it is in want, provide for it; where it is divided, reunite it; for the sake of Jesus Christ thy Son our Savior. Amen. Moment of Silence The Gospel Lesson Matthew 5:38-42 Reader A reading from the Gospel according to Matthew. Jesus said, You have heard that it was said, An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth. But I say to you, Do not resist an evildoer. But if anyone strikes you on the right cheek, turn the other also; and if anyone wants to sue you and take your coat, give your cloak as well; and if anyone forces you to go one mile, go also the second mile. Give to everone who begs from you, and do not refuse anone who wants to borrow from you. Reader The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Reflection The Rt. Rev. Mary Glasspool Assistant Bishop, Diocese of New York 7
8 Collect Grant, O God, that your holy and life-giving Spirit may so move every human heart [and especially the hearts of the people of this land], that barriers which divide us may crumble, suspicions disappear, and hatreds cease; that our divisions being healed, we may live in justice and peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Moment of Silence Choral Anthem Got a Mind to Do Right Spiritual arr. David Morrow Got a mind to do right. I got a mind to do right. Everyday Jesus gave me this mind to do right. I got a mind to live right. Everyday Jesus gave me this mind to live right. I got a mind to pray right. Everyday Jesus gave me this mind to pray right. I got a mind to live right. Everyday Jesus gave me this mind to live right. I got a mind to love right. Everyday Jesus gave me this mind to love right.
